BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia and other developing countries, electronic medical record systems and other health information technology are being introduced. However, a small proportion of low-income countries have successfully implemented national health information systems. One cause for this can be the lack of digital literacy among medical practitioners. As a result, this study aimed to assess health professionals' digital literacy level and associated factors in Northwest Ethiopia.
METHOD: A quantitative cross-sectional study was employed among 423 health professionals working in a teaching an

INTRODUCTION: Malaria surveillance in Africa is conducted largely through health facility-based health management information systems (HMIS) which provide aggregated data to malaria control programs. Supplementation of HMIS surveillance with other routinely collected hospital data can provide vital statistics on malaria control in regions of high burden.
METHODS: To assess the utility of supplementing HMIS data, we implemented a pilot program of enhanced malaria surveillance in a district hospital in northern Zambia over a five-year period. Data were tabulated from existing nursing records, c

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) severity, reflecting both disease intensity and duration, is heterogeneous making it challenging to study in administrative databases where severity may confound or mediate associations with outcomes. Garris et al. developed an administrative claims-based algorithm employing claims over a 1-year period to classify SLE severity as mild, moderate or severe. We sought to compare this administrative algorithm to a measure of SLE activity, the SLE Disease Activity Index-2000 (SLEDAI-2K) score at clinical visits. We identified 100 SLE patients followed in the Brigh

BACKGROUND: In response to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak that unfolded across Europe in 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) called for repurposing existing influenza surveillance systems to monitor COVID-19. This analysis aimed to compare descriptively the extent to which influenza surveillance systems were adapted and enhanced and how COVID-19 surveillance could ultimately benefit or disrupt routine influenza surveillance.
METHODS: We used a previously developed framework in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom to describe COVID-19 surveillance and its imp

We examined an association between a history of hospital-treated depression and physical diseases in 1877 suicide victims from Northern Finland. Information on physical diseases and depression of victims was extracted from the Finnish Hospital Discharge Registers. Of suicide victims, 31% of female and 16% of male victims had a lifetime history of depression. When compared with victims without any lifetime hospital-treated physical illnesses, a history of depression was shown to associate with the diseases of the nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems in the group of sym

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are complex conditions that burden patients and healthcare systems. Disparities in health literacy may hinder patient comprehension of online educational materials, potentially influencing outcomes. Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven chatbots offer a promising solution to improve the readability of patient information materials. We assessed the readability of available online materials on TMD in the United Kingdom (UK) and evaluate the ability of three AI-chatbots to improve readability. A search was done of all UK public hospital websites with Oral and Maxil

INTRODUCTION: Occupational hazards (OH) in healthcare facilities are common, with 1 in 10 healthcare workers experiencing a hazard each year. These hazards can be either biological, chemical, ergonomic, or radiation. Despite their occurrence, reporting of these hazards remains limited, with very little information available, especially from healthcare facilities. Also, there is limited information on incident reporting systems (IRSs), which can help capture, track, and monitor the occurrence of these hazards within health facilities. The absence of these systems results in inaccurate and incom

We introduced the electronic health record system in 2002. We produced a community medical network system to consolidate all medical treatment information from the local institute in 2010. Here, we report on the present status of this system that has been in use for the previous 2 years. We obtained a private server, set up a virtual private network(VPN)in our hospital, and installed dedicated terminals to issue an electronic certificate in 50 local institutions. The local institute applies for patient agreement in the community hospital(hospital designation style). They are then entitled to a

BACKGROUND: Structured Medication Reviews (SMRs) are intended to help deliver the NHS Long Term Plan for medicines optimisation in people living with multiple long-term conditions and polypharmacy. It is challenging to gather the information needed for these reviews due to poor integration of health records across providers and there is little guidance on how to identify those patients most urgently requiring review.
OBJECTIVE: To extract information from scattered clinical records on how health and medications change over time, apply interpretable artificial intelligence (AI) approaches to p

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have found that patients with recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP) may be at reduced risk for a clinically severe course and have reduced mortality. However, there is still a lack of data related to RAP patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Baseline characteristics of patients diagnosed with initial and recurrent acute pancreatitis from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care/MIMIC-IV database were extracted. In-hospital mortality and length of hospital/ICU stay were identified as outcomes. Binomial logistic regression a

BACKGROUND: With hospital electronic prescribing and medicines administration (HEPMA) systems now in widespread use across hospital inpatient clinical services, work is underway to measure the benefits of HEPMA on healthcare systems and patient care. HEPMA functionality enables users to prescribe medicines by 'bundle' or 'protocol'. Although it is assumed that this is a significant system benefit, there are few qualitative studies supporting this conclusion.
AIM: To explore the impact of an electronic anticipatory care medicines protocol on junior doctor perceptions of their confidence and co

BACKGROUND: Trauma is a leading cause of mortality. Holistic views of trauma systems consider injury as a public health problem that requires efforts in primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. However, the performance of trauma systems is commonly judged on the in-hospital mortality rate. Such a focus misses opportunities to consider all deaths within a population, to understand differences in in-hospital and out-of-hospital trauma deaths and to inform population-level injury prevention efforts. The aim of this study was to provide an epidemiological overview of out-of-hospital and in-hosp
