Maternal Mortality Determinants in Rural Kenya: An Audit of Three Hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Global health agencies advocate that no mother should die while giving life, more so from preventable causes. However, there are persistently high maternal mortalities in various regions with a current global maternal mortality ratio of 211/100,000 live births. This study sought to investigate the causes and determinants of maternal mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A four-year retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted in three tertiary hospitals within Migori county in Kenya. Data were extracted from 101 maternal mortality records from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 201

Patient-reported predictors of postdischarge mortality after cardiac hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Adults hospitalized for cardiovascular events are at high risk for postdischarge mortality. Screening of psychosocial risk is prioritized by the Joint Commission. We tested whether key patient-reported psychosocial and behavioral measures could predict posthospitalization mortality in a cohort of adults hospitalized for a cardiovascular event. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study to test the prognostic utility of validated patient-reported measures, including health literacy, social support, health behaviors and disease management, and socioeconomic status. Cox surviva

MORTALITY RISK ASSESSMENT AMONG PATIENTS, HOSPITALIZED FOR COVID-19.

In Georgia, the number of confirmed cases of Coronavirus were 1,85,5289. Among them, 17 132 patients died. Information on risk factors for mortality is insufficient. The purpose of our research is to evaluate clinical features of heavy patients with severe COVID and determine prognostic factors of outcome. Factors associated with critical COVID-19 included older age and certain chronic medical conditions. The clinical material of 250 chronically ill COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit was retrospectively studied. We divided the patients into two groups. The dead and the survi

The Predictive Factors Associated with In-Hospital Mortality of Melioidosis: A Cohort Study.

Background and Objectives: Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, and it has a wide range of clinical symptoms. It is endemic in tropical areas, including Southeast Asia. Despite the availability of effective treatment, the mortality rate is still high, especially in patients presenting with septic shock. The aim of this study was to determine and explore clinical characteristics, microbiology, treatment outcomes, and factors associated with in-hospital mortality which could predict prognosis and provide a guide for future treatment. Materials and Methods: Th…

Impact of a Cardiogenic Shock Program on Mortality in a Non-Transplant Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiogenic shock is associated with high in-hospital morbidity and mortality. Improvements in this care process could lead to … ar care specialists. The primary objective was to analyse whether there were differences between in-hospital mortality and mortality during follow-up. Predictors of in-hospital mortality were examined as a secondary objective. RESULTS: A total of 139 patients were enrolled: 69 of them in the previous period and 70 in the cardiogenic shock program period. There was …

Preoperative TIPS and in-hospital mortality in patients with cirrhosis undergoing surgery.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Cirrhosis is associated with an increased surgical morbidity and mortality. Portal hypertension and the surgery type have been established as critical determinants of postoperative outcome. We aim to evaluate the hypothesis that preoperative transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement in patients with cirrhosis is associated with a lower incidence of in-house mortality/liver transplantation (LT) after surgery. METHODS: A retrospective database search for the years 2010-2020 was carried out. We identified 64 patients with cirrhosis who underwent surgery wi

Lipoprotein(a) during COVID-19 hospitalization: Thrombosis, inflammation, and mortality.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: High levels of lipoprotein(a) could worsen the outcome of COVID-19 due to prothrombotic and proinflammatory properties of lipoprotein(a). We tested the hypotheses that during COVID-19 hospitalization i) increased thrombotic activity and inflammation are associated with lipoprotein(a) levels, and ii) lipoprotein(a) levels are associated with rate of hospital death and discharge. METHODS: We studied 211 patients admitted to Copenhagen University Hospital in 2020 with COVID-19, that is, prior to any vaccination. Thrombotic activity was marked by elevated D-dimer while inflam

The Effect of Hospital Characteristics on Racial/Ethnic Variation in Cirrhosis Mortality.

BACKGROUND: Racial/ethnic disparities in liver disease and cirrhosis are well established. Cirrhosis mortality is improving overall despite vast differences between hospitals. We sought to understand the hospital characteristics where minorities seek care, whether disparities in cirrhosis mortality persist, and determine how hospital differences contribute to these differences. METHODS: We used data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample and the American Hospital Association to identify inpatient episodes of care for cirrhosis and structural characteristics at the parent hospital. We used multi

In-hospital mortality risk factors in patients with ascites due to cirrhosis.

INTRODUCTION: ascites is one of the most common complications of cirrhosis associated with a high rate of mortality. Although several scores have been developed in order to assess the prognosis of the disease, they were designed for predicting liver transplantation requirements and mortality in the short term, but not while in hospital. The aim of this study was to weigh risk factors for in-hospital mortality in adult patients with ascites due to alcoholic cirrhosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: we performed a cross-sectional study in 180 adult patients with diagnosis of cirrhosis with portal hypert…
