Childhood trauma and risky alcohol consumption: a study of Australian adults with low housing stability.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: This paper examined whether recall of childhood trauma was associated with adult alcohol consumption in a sample of Australians with low housing security. The secondary aim was to examine whether risky alcohol consumption predicted subsequent housing instability. Sociodemographic factors were examined as potential moderators of these associations. DESIGN AND METHODS: This paper utilised data collected through the Journeys Home Study, a longitudinal study of a representative sample of individuals who were homeless or at risk of homelessness. This paper focused on 1224 pa

Psychosocial Factors Associated with Psychiatric Readmission Following Inpatient Discharge: A Systematic Review.

Psychiatric readmission following inpatient discharge is common and is frequently used as an indicator of continuity and quality of care in mental health services. Although readmission is often interpreted as a marker of clinical relapse, increasing evidence suggests that psychosocial factors may contribute to post-discharge outcomes. However, evidence on these factors remains fragmented across settings, populations, and healthcare systems. This systematic review synthesised quantitative observational evidence on psychosocial factors associated with psychiatric readmission following discharge f

Risk Factors Associated With Unsuccessful Linkage to Outpatient Hepatitis C Care.

Background Modern direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) can treat and cure hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Treatment of HCV at a population level has the potential to decrease the prevalence of chronic HCV infection and sequela. Unfortunately, many patients fall off the HCV treatment cascade and do not complete HCV treatment. As social determinants of health (SDHs) affect HCV acquisition, we sought to evaluate factors that may limit successful linkage to outpatient HCV care. Methods We conducted a case-control study by matching patients who missed and those who attended their outpatient HCV visit

Changes in Medication Utilization and Adherence Associated with Homeless Adults' Entry into Permanent Supportive Housing.

BACKGROUND: Permanent supportive housing (PSH) programs, which have grown over the last decade, have been associated with changes in health care utilization and spending. However, little is known about the impact of such programs on use of prescription drugs critical for managing chronic diseases prevalent among those with unstable housing. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of PSH on medication utilization and adherence among Medicaid enrollees in Pennsylvania. DESIGN: Difference-in-differences study comparing medication utilization and adherence between PSH participants and a matched compa

Housing Insecurity and Perceived Mental Health Challenges Among Individuals Living with HIV: Qualitative Insights from Kisumu, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: HIV remains a public health concern despite several decades of effort. In sub-Saharan Africa, where political, environmental, and economic challenges persist, progress toward "Getting to Zero," including zero new infections and zero HIV-related deaths, has been significantly slow. Although sub-Saharan Africa has seen the successful implementation of HIV/AIDS interventions across behavioral, biomedical, and structural approaches, there has been limited focus on housing insecurity-the inability to access safe, affordable, and stable housing-and mental health among people living wit

Medicare Advantage and Type 2 Diabetes Outcomes.

IMPORTANCE: Medicare Advantage (MA) costs 22% more than original Medicare (OM) for a given individual ($83 billion in annual excess public costs). However, MA may improve type 2 diabetes (T2D) outcomes compared with OM by providing financial protections (eg, annual out-of-pocket spending caps) and supplemental benefits (eg, healthy food assistance) that OM cannot. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether MA coverage is associated with better T2D outcomes than OM. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A longitudinal cohort study using target trial emulation principles for design and analysis in adults ag

Prevalence of Housing Insecurity in Survivors of Traumatic Injury.

BACKGROUND: Almost 20% of the US population are housing insecure (HI) due to inadequate living conditions, imbalanced costs to income, nonsustainable shelter, or overcrowding. Housing insecure and physical trauma share similar risk factors, but their direct association is not well elucidated. The objective of our study was to determine the prevalence of HI in survivors of traumatic injury. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study at an urban, level 1 trauma center. A survey on social determinants of health was administered to adult patients, and demographic, injury specifics, and clin

A Systematic Review up to 2018 of HIV and Associated Factors Among Criminal Justice-Involved (CJI) Black Sexual and Gender Minority Populations in the United States (US).

Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) and Black transgender women (BTW) are impacted by dual epidemics of HIV and incarceration. We advanced understanding of the relationship between criminal justice involvement, HIV, and other key HIV-related characteristics among these key populations in the US. We conducted a systematic review up to 2018 and 47 articles met the inclusion criteria of scientific publications involving quantitative findings of US-based HIV-related studies focused on criminal justice-involved (CJI) BMSM and BTW. Overall, there was a dearth of studies focused specifically on BT

Exchange of Sex for Drugs or Money in Adolescents and Young Adults: An Examination of Sociodemographic Factors, HIV-Related Risk, and Community Context.

The goal of this research was to examine associations among sociodemographic factors, HIV risk, and community context (e.g., economic insecurity, job training, housing instability, crime victimization, and perceived community norms) in adolescents and young adults who ever exchanged sex for drugs or money. Anonymous survey data were collected using ACASIs at community venues where adolescents and young adults congregate in resource-challenged, STI prevalent, urban, US neighborhoods. Conventional descriptive statistics, Fisher's exact tests, and generalized estimating equations approaches were

Residential eviction and exposure to violence among people who inject drugs in Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) experience markedly elevated rates of physical and sexual violence, as well as housing instability. While previous studies have demonstrated an association between homelessness and increased exposure to violence among PWID, the relationship between residential eviction and violence is unknown. We therefore sought to examine the association between residential eviction and experiencing violence among PWID in Vancouver, Canada. METHODS: Data were derived from two open prospective cohort studies of PWID: the Vancouver Injection Drug Users Study (VIDUS)

The Coffee was Paid for Dearly: Shipwreck BZN4 and the Frigate't Hart.

While there is still much to be done, there have been tremendous strides made in increasing the diversity of children's literature; however one area that is often overlooked in these conversations is social class. From years of providing picture book story time to young children living in homeless shelters, it became obvious that picture books being published in the U.S. privilege the experiences of middle- and upper-class people, especially in their depictions of home and housing. Based on analysis of 185 picture books published in the U.S. between 1999 and 2019, I argue that home as typicall

The geography of risk: understanding disparities in nonmedical opioid mortality and the role of socio-built environments in New Jersey.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in nonmedical opioid (NMO) mortality reflect a shifting geography of risk that presents urgent public health challenges. This study uses a socio-built environment (SBE) framework to investigate how place-based conditions shape NMO-related risks across urban, suburban, and rural municipalities in New Jersey. METHODS: Six SBE domains with multiple indicators were analyzed. Generalized linear models with a negative binomial distribution examined associations with NMO mortality, estimating incidence rate ratios with 95% confidence intervals. Domain-level contributions were

Environmental Influences on HIV Medication Adherence: The Role of Neighborhood Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that highly disordered neighborhoods would expose residents to environmental pressures, leading to reduced antiretroviral (ARV) medication adherence. METHODS: Using targeted sampling, we enrolled 503 socioeconomically disadvantaged HIV-positive substance users in urban South Florida between 2010 and 2012. Participants completed a 1-time standardized interview that took approximately 1 hour. We tested a multiple mediation model to examine the direct and indirect effects of neighborhood disorder on diversion-related nonadherence to ARVs; risky social networks and hou

Physical and mental health, cognitive development, and health care use by housing status of low-income young children in 20 American cities: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the independent effect of homeless and doubled-up episodes on physical and mental health, cognitive development, and health care use among children. METHODS: We used data from 4 waves of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, involving a sample of 2631 low-income children in 20 large US cities who have been followed since birth. Multivariate analyses involved logistic regression using the hybrid method to include both fixed and random effects. RESULTS: Of the sample, 9.8% experienced homelessness and an additional 23.6% had a doubled-up episode. Housing statu

Risk Profiles of Women Experiencing Initial and Repeat Incarcerations: Implications for Prevention Programs.

Incarcerated women experience myriad individual, interpersonal, and structural factors leading to arrest and rearrest. This study examined risk profiles of women experiencing initial and repeat incarcerations. The sample included 521 women recruited from two prisons in North Carolina and enrolled in a HIV/STD risk-reduction intervention trial. Variables included socio-demographics, structural/economic factors, sexual and substance use behaviors, STDs, victimization history, and depressive symptoms. Bivariate and multivariable analyses identified risk differences. Compared to women incarcerated

Sex differences in the impact of social determinants of health on substance use disorder treatment outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) and clinical severity factors are known to shape substance use disorder (SUD) treatment outcomes, yet limited research has explored how these influences differ by sex. Understanding these differences is important to improving treatment equity and outcomes in publicly funded treatment systems. METHODS: This study analyzed data from the 2018-2022 Treatment Episode Data Set-Discharges (TEDS-D), a national dataset of adults discharged from publicly funded SUD treatment programs. Sex-stratified binary logistic regressions were used to examine predic

Predictors of hepatitis C treatment outcomes in a harm reduction-focused primary care program in New York City.

BACKGROUND: The social determinants of health that influence steps in the entire Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) treatment cascade must be identified to achieve HCV elimination goals. This project aimed to evaluate the association of these factors with HCV treatment completion and return for sustained virologic response (SVR) testing. METHODS: We used retrospective cohort data from our primary care-based HCV treatment program that provides comprehensive harm reduction care to those who use or formerly used drugs. Among persons who began direct-acting antiviral HCV treatment between December 2014 and
