Schmallenberg virus, a novel orthobunyavirus infection in ruminants in Europe: potential global impact and preventive measures.

In autumn 2011, Schmallenberg virus was the first orthobunyavirus detected in Europe. The virus belongs to the Simbu serogroup. Like other o … of the skull (macrocephaly, brachygnathia inferior) as well as variable malformations of the brain (hydranencephaly, porencephaly, cerebellar hypoplasia, hypoplasia of the brain stem) and of the spinal cord in lambs, goat kids and calves. The infection spread rapidly over large parts of North-Western Europe. Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, t …

The cavum septi pellucidi: why is it important?

There were two cases of simple form of hydrocephalus, two of cerebral dysgenesis (hydranencephaly and holoprosencephaly), and four of hydrocephalus secondary to intraventricular hemorrhage. Relatively primitive neuronal developmental processes, such as neuronal cell proliferation and migration, were found to be altered by rapidly progressive sim …

Cerebral Malformations in Calves Presumed to Be Associated with an Outbreak of Bluetongue Virus Serotype 3 Infection.

Postmortem examination revealed moderate to severe hydrocephalus internus or hydranencephaly. The results of clinical and neurological examinations, MRI, and postmortem examination, indicate severe impairment of brain development presumably associated with transplacental BTV-3 infection. Congenital hydranencephalic-hydrocephalic syndrome associated with mitochondrial dysfunction.

We report the case of a 3-year-old girl, the only child of a nonconsanguineous couple without relevant antecedents, who was born with hydranencephalic-hydrocephalic syndrome diagnosed by ultrasonography at gestation week 28, and who was treated during the neonatal period by implantation of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. She showed severe mental retardation, and died at age 4 years following an acute respiratory infection. Due to persistently high lactic acid levels in blood, muscle and skin biopsies were taken. Analysis of muscle biopsies revealed microscopic and ultrastructural alterations typ

Congenital absence of pyramids and its significance in genetic diseases.

Bilateral absence of the pyramids, best assessed in transverse sections of the medulla oblongata, was found in 0.7% of 2,850 autopsies performed at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne (Australia). A strong association with some forms of congenital aqueductal stenosis was observed and evaluated in further cases ascertained through other hospitals. The very strong association observed with X-linked congenital aqueduct stenosis may be useful diagnostically but must be evaluated in other centres. At least, the presence of pyramids seems strong evidence against this diagnosis. Absence of the p

Low birthweight and premature birth are observed more frequent … hat group I and II had complication of the disturbance of fetal circulation, but group III did not. Hydranencephaly (group I) and polymicrogyria (group II) might develop when the disruption occurs at an intermediate stage of morphogenesis (before the 6th month of gestation). The spectrum of brain malformations and disruptions in twins.

Twins have an increased risk for congenital malformations and disruptions, including defects in brain morphogenesis. We analyzed data on bra … hypoplasia to classic Dandy-Walker malformation. Brain disruptions were seen in 11 individuals with hydranencephaly, porencephaly, or white matter loss without cysts. Our series included an expected statistically significant excess of monozygotic (MZ) twin pairs (22/41 MZ, 54%) compared to population data (482/1448 MZ, 33.3%; p = .0110), and an unexpected statist …

In utero brain destruction resulting in collapse of the fetal skull, microcephaly, scalp rugae, and neurologic impairment: the fetal brain disruption sequence.

Three infants are reported with a recognizable pattern of defects consisting of severe microcephaly, overlapping sutures, prominence of the occipital bone, and scalp rugae. This condition, which we think represents microhydranencephaly, appears to be produced by partial brain destruction during the second or third trimester, diminution in intracranial hydrostatic pressure, and subsequent collapse of the fetal skull. Several different causes for this condition have been suggested including partial disruption of the blood supply to the brain and prenatal viral infection.

[Positive ventriculography and computer assisted tomography of the skull in the evaluation of megalocephaly in newborns and infants (author's transl)].

To clarify indications and limits of computer assisted tomography and positive ventriculography the results of both methods were compared with each other retrospectively in 55 macrocephalic newborns and infants. It could be shown that positive ventriculography, even if combined with coronal views, was superseded by computer assisted tomography to only a certain extent. To complete the appropriate diagnosis preoperatively positive ventriculography was necessary most often in patients with paranatal disturbances who had undergone intensive care treatment. The non-invasive method of computer assi

Polygraphic characterization of the sleep-epilepsy patterns in a hydranencephalic child with severe generalized seizures of the Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

This is the report of a hydranencephalic child with severe generalized seizures of the Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) who lacked the development of the entire cerebral hemispheres and had preserved the brain stem, cerebellum, hypothalamus and a portion of the thalamus as evidenced by radiological and/or physiological studies. Conventional polygraphic sleep studies in these patients showed presence of scalp EEG and other peripheral, somatic and vegetative signs characterizing the wakefulness, quiet sleep and active sleep stages. Absence of the vertex waves and disrupted sleep spindles were the m

Associative learning in premature hydranencephalic and normal twins.

A hydranencephalic infant lacking cerebral hemispheres and a normal twin were tested for associative learning. After repeated trials in which two stimuli were temporally paired, test trials were given in which the second stimulus was omitted. Cardiac orienting responses to stimulus omission indicated that learning had taken place in both infants.
