Three novel structurally related pentadecapeptides, named lasioglossins, were isolated from the venom of the eusocial bee Lasioglossum laticeps. Their primary sequences were established as H-Val-Asn-Trp-Lys-Lys-Val-Leu-Gly-Lys-Ile-Ile-Lys-Val-Ala-Lys-NH(2) (LL-I), H-Val-Asn-Trp-Lys-Lys-Ile-Leu-Gly-Lys-Ile-Ile-Lys-Val-Ala-Lys-NH(2) (LL-II) and H-Val-Asn-Trp-Lys-Lys-Ile-Leu-Gly-Lys-Ile-Ile-Lys-Val-Val-Lys-NH(2) (LL-III). These lasioglossins exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, low haemolytic and mast cell degranulation activity, and a pot

Out of a total of 350 referrals for allergy to hymenoptera venom over four years, 250 patients who had one or more severe systemic reactions were selected for a "rush course" of immunotherapy after confirmation of the responsible reagin (skin tests, specific IgE). The method used in the 245 patients who accepted the protocol enabled us to arrive at a maintenance dose of 100 micrograms of venom in three days. Tolerance was excellent; no serious side effects were observed; the course of immunotherapy did not have to be stopped in any of the patients. Clinical efficacy appeared to be satisfactory…

Standardized laboratory assays are essential for generating reproducible and comparable data in toxicology. Although acute contact and oral toxicity tests are widely applied in pesticide risk assessment, these approaches have rarely been adapted for social vespids. Vespa velutina nigrithorax, an invasive hornet in Europe and East Asia, is commonly managed through chemical control, yet treatment efficacy may vary depending on the route of exposure and other biological factors. This protocol describes a standardized method to assess acute contact and oral toxicity of chemical compounds in adult

The alfalfa leafcutting bee (LCB) (Megachile rotundata Fabricius) is a solitary, managed pollinator widely used in North American agriculture to produce alfalfa and hybrid canola seed. Despite its economic importance, and known sensitivity to certain pesticides, little is known about the specific pesticide residues LCBs encounter during pollination, and toxicity data for this species remains limited. To determine what residues LCBs are commonly exposed to, we screened larval LCB provisions from nine alfalfa sites during pollination in southern Alberta for 69 pesticide residues. Eight residues

The genus Proceratium comprises rare but ecologically significant cryptobiotic predators of temperate and tropical forest litter. The group is known for its abdomen which can curl dorsally >90° relative to the body axis. Proceratium includes 130 described species worldwide. In China, seven species have been recorded, yet recent surveys repeatedly reveal morphologically distinctive undescribed taxa, indicating a still-underestimated diversity of Proceratium. In this study, seven known Chinese species of the ant genus Proceratium Roger, 1863 are reviewed: P. bruelheidei, P. itoi, P. japonicum, P

Tetragonula laeviceps sensu lato (s.l.) Smith 1857 has the most complicated nomenclatural history among the Tetragonula genera. The objective of this study was to investigate whether T. laeviceps s.l. individuals with worker bees are grouped in the same or nearly the same morphological characteristics and have similar COI haplotype cluster groups. A total of 147 worker bees of T. laeviceps s.l. were collected from six sampling sites in Sabah (RDC, Tuaran, Kota Marudu, Putatan, Kinarut and Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture (FSA)), but only 36 were selected for further studies. These specimens

Prospecting wasp, ant and bee venom for active bio-molecules has gained considerable interest among researchers in recent years. Collecting sufficient quantity of venom from solitary wasps without sacrificing them is often difficult. Here we describe a non-invasive technique for collecting venom from a solitary wasp Delta conoideum Gmelin (Red-backed potter wasp). Venom was milked by presenting an agar block to a single female wasp for stinging. The venom was extracted from the agar block using ACN: water solvent system. The total protein in venom was estimated quantitatively and the presence

The genus Scelio is a cosmopolitan and speciose group of solitary parasitoids of the eggs of short-horned grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae). A number of these hosts are important pests, including plague locusts of the genus Schistocerca. Species of Scelio are recognized as potentially important biological control agents, but this possibility has yet to be fully realized, in part because the species-level taxonomy is still incompletely developed. The species of the pulchripennis group have been recently revised. As a continuation of this effort, here we revise the Afrotropical species of Sce

Infection experiments showed that the African ant Camponotus compressiscapus can serve as a second intermediate host of Dicrocoelium hospes. Most of the cercariae penetrated the crop-wall and encysted in the hemocoel, whereas one or more larvae invaded the ant's central nervous system. These larvae cause behavioral changes, which increase their chance of being ingested by final hosts. Experimental infections of definitive hosts were obtained in golden hamsters, Meriones unguiculatus, guinea-pigs, and sheep.

The wing structure, kinematics, and aerodynamics of miniature insects differ drastically from those of medium- and large-sized species. However, the structural and functional features of their wing musculature that contribute to these differences remain largely unknown. We analyze flight muscle function in two species of microinsects from different orders. Both employ indirect muscles to power flight, but the ratio of sizes between the two main muscle groups differs fundamentally, and M. viggianii is characterized by a unique hypertrophy of the dorsal longitudinal muscles. In both, aerodynamic

Parasitoid wasps play a fundamental role in the biological control of pests. However, their morphological identification may be limited due to their small size and the high morphological similarity between species. Our objective was to identify specific genomic variants of the target species Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle, 1993, Tetrastichus howardi (Olliff, 1893), Trichospilus diatraeae Cherian & Margabandhu, 1942, and Trichogramma pretiosum Riley, 1879, (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) by whole-genomic sequencing. Parasitoids were collected from their hosts and established in the laborat…

Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae), a pest of Australian origin, has spread to many countries where it damages plants of the Eucalyptus genus. The parasitoid Psyllaephagus bliteus Riek (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is the most widely employed biological control strategy to manage this pest. The identification of Psyllaephagus species present in Brazil is essential, as they may compromise the effectiveness of the biological control of G. brimblecombei. The objective of this study was to report species of Psyllaephagus (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) in infestations of G. brimblecombei…

The presence of magnetite in the abdomen of Apis mellifera suggests a role in magnetic signal perception, aiding orientation and navigation. Reproduction occurs in drone congregation areas (DCA), which are spatially and temporally stable, appearing in spring-summer during regionally specific mating flight times (midday to evening), when Earth's magnetic field intensity (EMFI) often increases. This coincidence points to a possible link between magnetism and DCA location. We evaluated 3 EMFI measurement methods-2 mobile apps (Crowdmag, Phyphox) and a low-cost magnetometer-at 3 known DCA in Argen

Binodoxys communis (Gahan) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an aphid parasitoid capable of developing in a wide range of pest aphids. Currently, laboratory rearing of B. communis in China mainly depends on the cotton aphid Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae)-cotton system. Although technically reliable, this method entails high labor demands, extensive space requirements, and overall elevated costs. To identify a more efficient aphid-plant combination for mass rearing of B. communis, we evaluated this parasitoid's developmental performance, population growth, and rearing cost-effectivenes…

Worker honey bees are crucial for colony stability and ecosystem pollination. However, the cross-scale aging features and underlying mechanisms in the Eastern honey bee (Apis cerana) remain poorly understood. This study systematically investigated age-related changes in A. cerana workers across youth (1~5 days post-emergence, dpe), middle age (29 dpe), and old age (50 dpe) through integrated morphological, ultrastructural, and transcriptomic analyses. With increasing age, the phenotypic deterioration in the old bees (OBs) was significant: the body color brightness decreased by 16.7% compared t

The nuptial flight of ants usually occurs during certain periods of the year. Alate females and males fly out of their nests to mate simultaneously. In the genus Camponotus, sex-specific chemicals are deposited in the male head; however, their roles in nuptial flight have not yet been clarified. This study aimed to elucidate the functions of male-specific chemicals in the Japanese carpenter ant Camponotus japonicus. First, we identified three chemicals characteristic to the male - methyl salicylate (MS), methyl 6-methylsalicylate (MMS), and methyl anthranilate (MA) - all of which triggered ele
