Myoglobinuria-induced Acute Kidney Injury Secondary to CovishieldTM Vaccination.

Vaccination is the best strategy for the development of herd immunity and for the control of the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) pandemic. As the number of immunizations across the globe reaches a record number, random cases of diverse adverse effects of the vaccines are being documented. We report a case of renal biopsy-proven myoglobin-induced acute tubular injury requiring dialytic support post-CovishieldTM vaccination. Awareness of this rare complication is necessary so that it can be recognized early, and renal injury avoided.

A re-emerging infection?

A 38-year-old female with a two-week history of amoxicillin use for fever, cough, and coryza presented with two days of erythematous chest macules. Despite discontinuation of the antibiotic, her rash continued; measles was diagnosed with IgM titers. Three weeks previously she had returned from China. She had received only one vaccination despite travel to this measles-endemic area. Vaccination and herd immunity have reduced the measles prevalence in America by more than 99%; travel, foreign adoption, and refusal of vaccination have, however, increased the risk.

Prevalence of mumps antibodies in the Israeli population in relation to mumps vaccination policy and incidence of disease.

We examined the prevalence of mumps antibodies in the Israeli population in relation to mumps vaccination policy and past and subsequent incidence of disease. The levels of specific IgG antibodies against mumps were tested in 3330 residual sera collected during 1997-1998 from an age-stratified population sample. Against the background of a consistent MMR vaccination coverage of >90%, the age- and sex-adjusted seropositivity to mumps was 77.0%. No significant differences between genders were found. Seropositivity in the 10-13 years age group, born just before the introduction of the MMR vaccine

Differential approaches for vaccination from childhood to old age.

Primary prevention strategies, such as vaccinations at the age extremes, in neonates and elderly individuals, demonstrate a challenge to health professionals and public health specialists. The aspects of the differentiation and maturation of the adaptive immune system, the functional implications of immunological immaturity or immunosenescence and its impact on vaccine immunogenicity and efficacy will be highlighted in this review. Several approaches have been undertaken to promote Th1 responses in neonates and to enhance immune functions in elderly, such as conjugation to carrier proteins, ad

Detecting and Monitoring Porcine Hemagglutinating Encephalomyelitis Virus, an Underresearched Betacoronavirus.

Members of family Coronaviridae cause a variety of diseases in birds and mammals. Porcine hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus (PHEV), a lesser-researched coronavirus, can infect naive pigs of any age, but clinical disease is observed in pigs ≤4 weeks of age. No commercial PHEV vaccines are available, and neonatal protection from PHEV-associated disease is presumably dependent on lactogenic immunity. Although subclinical PHEV infections are thought to be common, PHEV ecology in commercial swine herds is unknown. To begin to address this gap in knowledge, a serum IgG antibody enzyme-linked

Economic effects of exposure to bovine viral diarrhea virus on dairy herds in New Zealand.

The economic loss to dairy farmers associated with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is believed to be high in New Zealand, but no estimates are yet available. The aim was therefore to estimate the economic loss associated with BVDV in dairy herds in New Zealand. Bulk tank milk (BTM) from a random sample of 590 herds from the Northland, Bay of Plenty, and Waikato regions was tested for antibody against BVDV. The inhibition percentage (sample to positive ratio), based on a threshold validated in an earlier study, was used to indicate herd-level infection. Herd reproductive indices, herd lactat

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis infection in cattle - a review in the context of seasonal pasture-based dairy herds.

Johne's disease is an infectious disease affecting cattle, other ruminants and non-ruminant wildlife worldwide, caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). This review provides an up-to-date concise overview of the pathogenesis of MAP, the significance of Johne's disease in cattle and the use of diagnostic testing at both animal and herd level in the context of seasonal pasture-based herds. While MAP can only replicate intracellularly, the bacterium is sufficiently robust to survive for months in the environment. Transmission of MAP is mostly via the faecal-oral route, how

Natural and experimental bovine immunodeficiency virus infection in cattle.

Since 1989, the LSU dairy herd, with its high seroprevalence of BIV, was recognized to have a high incidence of common diseases that reduced the economic viability of the dairy. The herd had a high percentage of cows with encephalitis associated with depression and stupor, alteration of the immune system associated with secondary bacterial infections, and chronic inflammatory lesions of the feet and legs. The occurrence of disease problems was associated with the stresses of parturition and early lactation and/or with unusual environmental stress cofactors.

Pasteurellosis in reindeer in northern Norway. A contribution of its epidemiology.

Lung inflammations in reindeer caused by Pasteurella multocida were reported from Scandinavian countries already at the beginning of this century. Several outbreaks have been recorded in reindeer herds in Norway. Observations made at the fall reindeer slaughtering, and in reindeer herds in Finnmark seem to indicate an endemic state of this infection with subclinical carriers. Predisposing factors and lowered specific immune status may probably play important roles when fatal outbreaks occur.

Modern History of Cholera Vaccines and the Pivotal Role of icddr,b.

The rapid spread of the seventh cholera pandemic over Asia in the 1960s led to several large field studies that revealed that the traditional injectable cholera vaccines had poor efficacy, which led the World Health Organization (WHO) in the 1970s to stop recommending cholera vaccination. At the same time, it stimulated research that has led to the development of the effective orally administered cholera vaccines (OCVs) that today are a cornerstone in WHO's strategy for Ending Cholera-A Global Roadmap to 2030. The first effective OCV, Dukoral, containing a mixture of inactivated Vibrio cholera

Voluntary Vaccination through Self-organizing Behaviors on Locally-mixed Social Networks.

Voluntary vaccination reflects how individuals weigh the risk of infection and the cost of vaccination against the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases, such as smallpox and measles. In a homogeneously mixing population, the infection risk of an individual depends largely on the proportion of vaccinated individuals due to the effects of herd immunity. While in a structured population, the infection risk can also be affected by the structure of individuals' social network. In this paper, we focus on studying individuals' self-organizing behaviors under the circumstance of voluntary vaccinatio

National Survey Indicates that Individual Vaccination Decisions Respond Positively to Community Vaccination Rates.

Some models of vaccination behavior imply that an individual's willingness to vaccinate could be negatively correlated with the vaccination rate in her community. The rationale is that a higher community vaccination rate reduces the risk of contracting the vaccine-preventable disease and thus reduces the individual's incentive to vaccinate. At the same time, as for many health-related behaviors, individuals may want to conform to the vaccination behavior of peers, counteracting a reduced incentive to vaccinate due to herd immunity. Currently there is limited empirical evidence on how individua

Strengthening measles immunity in Thailand: Rationale for a third vaccine dose to avert outbreaks.

Achieving measles elimination in Thailand requires restoring population immunity to levels sufficient to interrupt transmission. Recent outbreaks indicate widening immunity gaps despite long-standing national immunization programs. We assessed measles-specific immunity using 3675 age-representative serum samples collected in 2024 from four provinces. IgG concentrations were measured by ELISA with a protective threshold of ≥200 IU/L and interpreted alongside national serosurveys conducted in 2004 and 2014 to evaluate temporal changes in immunity across vaccine-era birth cohorts. Overall seropos

Impact of meningococcal C conjugate vaccination programs with and without catch-up campaigns in adolescents: Lessons learned from Bahia, Brazil.

The significant increase in the incidence rates and ongoing outbreaks of serogroup C meningococcal (MenC) disease, associated with the sequence type-103 complex, motivated the incorporation of the meningococcal C conjugate (MCC) vaccine in the routine immunization program in the State of Bahia, Brazil in early 2010, targeting children younger than 5 years of age. In its capital, Salvador, the program also included a catch-up campaign for individuals 10-24 years of age. We performed an observational, ecological study, analyzing data collected from 2007 to 2015, to compare the impact of these tw

A randomized controlled field trial assessing foot and mouth disease vaccine effectiveness in Gondar Zuria district, Northwest Ethiopia.

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly transmissible viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals, which is endemic in many developing countries. Vaccination is the main tool for FMD control in resource limited endemic countries like Ethiopia. Vaccine quality, which is often questionable in developing countries, is a critical element for effective disease control. The present study was aimed at evaluating the field effectiveness of a trivalent FMD vaccine (containing serotypes O, A and SAT 2), produced and widely used in Ethiopia, in terms of preventing clinical infection and severe disease. A ran

Impact of vaccine herd-protection effects in cost-effectiveness analyses of childhood vaccinations. A quantitative comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Inclusion of vaccine herd-protection effects in cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs) can impact the CEAs-conclusions. However, empirical epidemiologic data on the size of herd-protection effects from original studies are limited. METHODS: We performed a quantitative comparative analysis of the impact of herd-protection effects in CEAs for four childhood vaccinations (pneumococcal, meningococcal, rotavirus and influenza). We considered CEAs reporting incremental-cost-effectiveness-ratios (ICERs) (per quality-adjusted-life-years [QALY] gained; per life-years [LY] gained or per disabil

Vibrio cholerae: lessons for mucosal vaccine design.

The ability of Vibrio cholerae to persist in bodies of water will continue to confound our ability to eradicate cholera through improvements to infrastructure, and thus cholera vaccines are needed. We aim for an inexpensive vaccine that can provide long-lasting protection from all epidemic cholera infections, currently caused by O1 or O139 serogroups. Recent insights into correlates of protection, epidemiology and pathogenesis may help us design improved vaccines. This notwithstanding, we have come to appreciate that even marginally protective vaccines, such as oral whole-cell killed vaccines,

Vaccine Protection of Bangladeshi infants and young children against cholera: implications for vaccine deployment and person-to-person transmission.

BACKGROUND: Killed oral cholera vaccines are internationally licensed for older children and adults, but not for infants and young children. We investigated whether mass immunization of older children and adults can confer herd protection to children too young to be vaccinated. METHODS: We analyzed the first year of surveillance of an individually randomized, placebo-controlled trial of killed oral cholera vaccines in 89,596 older Bangladeshi children and adult women. Vaccine herd protection of children less than 2 years of age, who were too young to participate in the trial, was evaluated by

Tick fever risk and factors influencing the transmission of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina in cattle properties from Atlantic Forest biome.

We studied the immune condition of adult cattle to Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina and identified characteristics influencing the transmission of tick fever (TF) agents in properties from the Recôncavo baiano, a region located in the Atlantic Forest biome in Brazil. Blood was sampled from cattle on 28 properties to determine the seroprevalence of antibodies against A. marginale, B. bovis and B. bigemina and define the inoculation rate of B. bovis and B. bigemina on each property. A correlation test was conducted between herd seroprevalences of the TF agents to search fo
