[Immunologic diseases and hepatitis C virus].

Active chronic hepatitis may be associated with various immunologic diseases. In the Mediterranean area and to a lesser extent elsewhere, hepatitis C virus, has often been detected in patients affected by mixed cryoglobulinemia, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, polyarteritis nodosa autoimmune type 2b hepatitis, Hashimoto's disease, Sjögren's syndrome and lichen ruber planus. These findings should not be considered fortuitous due to the elevated prevalence of autoantibodies and immunologic abnormalities observed in hepatitis C patients compared with subjects presenting other liver dise

Predictors for live birth after unexplained spontaneous abortions: correlations between immunologic test results, obstetric histories, and outcome of next pregnancy without treatment.

Our objective was to determine whether results from tests for maternal serum antinuclear antibodies, cytotoxic antibodies to paternal lymphocytes, parental histocompatibility types, and blocking factors for maternal-paternal mixed lymphocyte reactions were predictive of pregnancy outcome without immunologic treatment. Pregnancy outcome data from 95 women with a history of unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortions who underwent immunologic tests at Jefferson Medical College were evaluated with multiple logistic regression analyses. The number of prior spontaneous abortions, history of another

We conclude that airway reactions to inhaled antigen in allergic dogs are dependent not only on immunologic factors but also on the degree of nonimmunologic airway responsiveness to histamine and that these factors are correlated inversely.

Immunologic mechanisms in intestinal diseases.

The intestine is a unique immunologic organ that comprises an afferent and efferent compartment and provides the host with the ability to respond through several different effector mechanisms against environmental factors. We discuss mechanisms in three intestinal diseases in this overview of the mucosal immune system. Genetic and immunologic factors are important in the pathogenesis of celiac disease, which is characterized by damage to the mucosa of the small intestine with resultant malabsorption. Pathogenic microbes are important environmental agents that interact with the intestinal mucos…

Allergic skin diseases.

The skin is one of the largest immunologic organs and is affected by both external and internal factors, as well as innate and adaptive immune responses. Many skin disorders, such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, urticaria, angioedema, psoriasis, and autoimmune blistering disorders, are immune mediated. Most of these diseases are chronic, inflammatory, and proliferative, in which both genetic and environmental factors play important roles. These immunologic mechanisms might have implications for potential targets of future therapeutic interventions.

Decreased plasma postheparin lipolytic activity in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Plasma postheparin lipolytic activity (PHLA) was measured on 50 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Plasma PHLA was significantly decreased in SLE patients. This decrease was most striking in the acute phase of the disease. There was a close relationship between decreased PHLA and immunologic factors indicative of the acute phase of SLE. These immunologic factors included shaggy antinuclear antibody pattern, low serum complement titer, high DNA antibody titer, mixed cryoglobulin and lumpy glomerular pattern by immunofluorescent staining.

Graft failure: II. Ocular surface complications.

Risk factors for corneal transplantation failure include both immunologic factors, such as graft rejection, corneal neovascularization, and peripheral anterior synechiae, as well as non-immunologic factors, such as ocular surface disorders (OSD) and glaucoma. This review highlights the necessity of having healthy ocular surface epithelia, tears, and eyelids. It presents different types of OSD, their underlying pathology, and their impact on native cornea and corneal grafts. In addition, a range of proposed donor and surgical factors influencing surface integrity following corneal transplant ar…

Compatible bone marrow transplantation and immunologic reconstitution of combined immunodeficiency disease.

To date, bone marrow transplantation affords the only successful means of achieving full immunologic reconstitution of patients with severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID). We have achieved immunologic reconstitution in 6 of 7 SCID patients using marrow transplants from compatible sib donors. One child died of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia following early immunologic reconstitution. A second child died of sepsis without evidence of engraftment, despite 3 marrow grafts, and a third died unexpectedly from massive aspiration pneumonia following complete immunologic reconstititon. Thus,

[Panniculitis in pancreatic diseases].

A case of panniculitis in a patient with a pancreatic pseudocyst is described. Etiologic possibilities of the dermic lesions are analized, pointing out the role of the antiproteolytic enzymes and immunologic factors. In our patient neither immunologic or alpha-1-antitrypsin anomalies were detected. The skin lesions are probably related to the release of the pancreatic enzymes into the blood.

Predisposing factors endorsing Candida infections.

Candida albicans is an opportunistic human fungal pathogen which is involved in infections ranging from superficial, mucosal to systemic candidiasis. It is the fourth most leading cause of death in nosocomial infections. Candidal infections are increasing at an alarming rate due to poor clinical management in hospital settings, more use of antibiotics, increased drug resistance, immunosuppression and host-pathogen related factors. There are various predisposing factors which can be immunologic or non-immunologic in origin that make a person susceptible to such infections. This review article e

The Immunologic Spectrum of Biostimulators and Its Clinical Importance.

BACKGROUND: Biostimulators have become important tools in aesthetic medicine to address age-related volume loss and tissue changes. They stimulate the body's natural processes to produce collagen and other components that contribute to a youthful appearance. Understanding the immunologic mechanisms underlying these processes is crucial for achieving optimal clinical outcomes. We thus sought to review the immunologic mechanisms underlying the action of biostimulators and their implications in clinical practice in aesthetic medicine. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was conducted to e

Genetic, Immunologic, and Environmental Basis of Sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease with tremendous heterogeneity in disease manifestations, severity, and clinical course that varies among different ethnic and racial groups. To better understand this disease and to improve the outcomes of patients, a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute workshop was convened to assess the current state of knowledge, gaps, and research needs across the clinical, genetic, environmental, and immunologic arenas. We also explored to what extent the interplay of the genetic, environmental, and immunologic factors could explain the different phenotypes and o…

Discussion: Implications of the stress syndrome to animal performance and health.

Similarities of blood metabolic and immunologic reactions that occur in cattle exposed to heat stress, other chronic stress-inducing environmental factors, and administration of pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid hormones have been described. Chronic stress can predispose cattle to both metabolic and infectious diseases. Improved characterization of endocrine, metabolic, and immunologic relationships offers promising means for studying effects of various treatment regimens on animal health, production, and reproduction.

Immunologic Environment of the Testis.

Mammalian spermatogenesis is a carefully orchestrated male germ cell differentiation process by which spermatogonia differentiate to spermatozoa in the testis. A highly organized testicular microenvironment is therefore necessary to support spermatogenesis. Regarding immunologic aspects, the testis adapts a specialized immune environment for the protection of male germ cells and testicular functions. The mammalian testis possesses two immunologic features: (1) it is an immunoprivileged organ where immunogenic germ cells do not induce deleterious immune responses under physiologic conditions; a

Race and ethnicity: Risk factors for fungal infections?

Racial and ethnic identities, largely understood as social rather than biologic constructs, may impact risk for acquiring infectious diseases, including fungal infections. Risk factors may include genetic and immunologic differences such as aberrations in host immune response, host polymorphisms, and epigenomic factors stemming from environmental exposures and underlying social determinants of health. In addition, certain racial and ethnic groups may be predisposed to diseases that increase risk for fungal infections, as well as disparities in healthcare access and health insurance. In this re

Extrahepatic immunologic features of chronic viral hepatitis.

Patients with chronic viral hepatitis commonly have immunologic manifestations, including autoantibodies and concurrent immune diseases. These immunologic findings may resemble those of autoimmune hepatitis and they are not disease specific. High titer autoantibodies (titers > or = 1:320) are uncommon in chronic viral hepatitis as are multiple concurrent autoantibodies. These findings reflect an autoimmune-predominant disorder in which the viral infection may be coincidental or facilitative. Concurrent immunologic disorders may be viral antigen-driven and associated with immune complex deposit

Graft survival of pediatric kidney transplant recipients selected for de novo steroid avoidance-a propensity score-matched study.

BACKGROUND: Steroid-avoidance protocols have gained popularity in pediatric kidney transplant recipients at low immunologic risk. The long-term safety of steroid avoidance in children with immunologic risk factors remains unknown. METHODS: Pediatric kidney transplant recipients from 2004 to 2014 in the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network database who received tacrolimus and mycophenolate immunosuppression were investigated. Propensity score matching was used to compare graft survival in 1624 children who received steroid avoidance with 1624 children who received steroid-based immuno

Prognostic impact of human leukocyte antigen class I expression and association of platinum resistance with immunologic profiles in epithelial ovarian cancer.

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is one of the most deadly carcinomas in females. Immune systems can recognize EOCs; however, a defect of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I expression is known to be a major mechanism for escape from immune systems, resulting in poor prognosis. The purpose of this study is to identify novel correlations between immunologic responses and other clinical factors. We investigated the expression of immunologic components in 122 cases of EOCs for which surgical operations were performed between 2001 and 2011. We immunohistochemically stained EOC specimens using an

Case study: heart transplantation--increased incidence of acute rejection in female recipients.

Although the precise link between the increased incidence of allograft rejection in female heart transplant recipients remains uncertain, various gender-specific characteristics may predispose women to earlier rejection episodes. Critical care practitioners must be cognizant of the underlying immunologic factors that indicate higher risk in these recipients. Until the ideal treatment for cardiac rejection is discovered, identifying pertinent immunologic factors, attending to subtle symptoms, obtaining serial endomyocardial biopsies and initiating prompt, additional aggressive immunosuppressive…
