A gas chromatographic technique is described for measuring various volatile sulphur compounds (H2S, COS, CS2, thiols, sulphides, disulphides) in air at the parts per trillion level. The sulphur compounds are trapped and concentrated at -196 degrees C in a small glass tube filled with the porous polymer Tenax GC. The excess of water in the air samples is pretrapped by calcium chloride, which drying agent does not adsorb any of the sulphur volatiles. The Tenax trap tube fits exactly in the injection port of the gas chromatograph, where the adsorbed sulphur compounds are liberated at 200 degrees

A quantitative and highly specific method to determine low concentrations of methionyl peptides, which do not contain tryptophan or cysteine residues, has been developed. The method is based on the stoichiometry and selectivity of N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) towards methionine and N-acetyltryptophan. Currently used test strip methods for the detection of glucose in urine are influenced by ascorbate and may thus give false negative results, e.g. in screening for diabetes. The urine glucose concentration is commonly used to monitor indirectly the degree of hyperglycemia in critically ill patients and to adjust insulin dosage. The new urine test, Chemstrip uG, was compared with Clinitest and Diastix methods by pediatric diabetic patients and by health care professionals. With the children testing all urine samples (N = 108), accuracy for Chemstrip uG and Clinitest was similar and superior to that of Diastix. When the children tested specimens containing up to only 2.2% glucose (N = 75), all test methods were shown to have generally similar accuracies.
