Very little is known about the circumstances surrounding suicides in people with schizophrenia. Between September 1989 and August 1998, 15 and 100 suicide victims with and without schizophrenia, respectively, were examined from the Maryland Brain Collection (MBC). Next-of-kin interview and medical record review following death collected demographic and clinical characteristics, family history, psychiatric symptoms, and variables surrounding the suicide. OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate an ear piercing and earring retention method for individuals with metal hypersensitivity.
SETTING: Private facial plastic surgery practice associated with a tertiary care medical center.
METHODS: Thirty-one patients with a history of hypersensitivity to metallic jewelry (62 ears) underwent earlobe piercing with an intravenous catheter.
RESULTS: None of the patients experienced an infection or hypersensitivity reaction. All patients were able to wear nickel-free earrings for short periods without using the shortened catheter.

Individualized ACTH treatment of the West syndrome (WS) was assessed in a prospective multicenter study, in which each patient's dosage was increased stepwise according to response. Patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have a high prevalence of UV radiation-responsive skin diseases including psoriasis, pruritus, eosinophilic folliculitis and eczemas. On the other hand, UV has been shown to suppress T cell-mediated immune responses and to induce activation and replication of HIV. These developments have prompted clinicians and investigators to question whether phototherapy is safe for HIV-infected individuals. We have reviewed these issues and hereby provide a summary and critique of relevant laboratory and clinical evidence.

Because some cases of hearing loss demand urgent attention, an approach to patients with hearing loss should be adopted in the primary care setting that allows for systematic institution of an individualized and appropriate treatment plan. We studied the effect occurring in close proximity before the phonation start and give an account of the microdramas taking place upon the glottis immediately before the phonation start in a group of individuals suffering from balbuties (60 children and adolescents from 9 to 14 years of age) and an equally large control group suffering from no such speech defect. In the group of children and adolescents with balbuties only less than 4% of the cases showed undisturbed regular phonation starts, whereas in the control group it was almost as much as 90%.

Students with autism present a challenge to the SLP not only because of the severity of their communication disorders, but also because of the great variety of learning styles and social skills. Collaboration- and consultation-based service delivery systems offer an alternative to traditional therapy for these students. We report the first known case of syphilitic gastritis in an HIV-infected person. Forty six subjects infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were followed up, for recording psychiatric morbidity if any, before and after the information regarding their HIV status was revealed to them.
