Dynamic skinfold thickness measurement in infants fed breast-milk, low- or high-sodium formula.

A stratified sample of normal infants born at term at Johannesburg Hospital, who attended the hospital for a routine 6-week follow-up visit, were selected to include 43 infants who were exclusively breast-fed, 42 fed a low-sodium formula and 39 fed a high-sodium formula (greater than 10 mmol sodium/l). Dynamic skinfold thickness measurements (DSTM), designed to assess the amount of interstitial fluid, were performed on each infant by the application of a skinfold caliper for a 3-second sampling period at two sites. The curves generated by these applications were recorded and analysed by microc

Intestinal milk-bolus obstruction in formula-fed premature infants given high doses of calcium.

Supplementation of milk formulae with calcium salts is recommended for low birth weight infants. We observed a serious complication of calcium administration in too high a dosage. Three premature infants (birth weight 1,080-1,900 g and gestational age 28-35 weeks) developed an obstruction of the distal ileum during the second week of life, leading to multiple bowel perforations and development of septic peritonitis in two cases. All three patients required surgical removal of a bolus blocking the intestinal lumen. Analysis of the bolus material from one infant indicated that the formation of s

Growth and adiposity of term infants fed whey-predominant or casein-predominant formulas or human milk.

Growth, estimated composition of weight gained, and stool patterns of term infants who were fed either a whey-predominant formula or a casein-predominant formula in a random design and of breast-fed infants were compared. All infants (N = 111) were healthy, singleton products of uncomplicated pregnancies. Birth weights and other anthropometric measures in the first few days of life were not different among the three feeding groups. Formula or breast milk was the infants' principal source of energy from birth to age 16 weeks. Average energy intakes of formula-fed infants and change of intakes w

Evaluation in guinea pigs of the allergenic capacity of two infant formulae based on hydrolyzed milk proteins.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the potential capacity of infant formulae based, respectively, on hydrolyzed casein and on hydrolyzed whey proteins to induce sensitization in guinea pigs. This potential capacity was tested by intravenous challenges with centrifuged formulae and by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. The results showed that neither formula was sensitizing, therefore suggesting that protein hydrolyzates can be considered a suitable cow's milk substitute for infants with cow's milk protein intolerance. However, further studies are necessary in order to investigate whe…

Enteral Infant Formulas: A Narrative Review of Historical Evolution, Nutritional Composition, and Clinical Use in Pediatrics.

This narrative review aims to describe the evolution, classification, nutritional composition, and clinical applications of enteral infant formulas, with an emphasis on pediatric patients who are unable to be breastfed or follow conventional feeding methods. The primary objective is to analyze the different types of formulas available - polymeric, hydrolyzed, elemental, and blenderized - and their indications based on clinical scenarios and specific patient needs. The methodology used was a non-systematic narrative review. Relevant scientific literature was selected through a targeted search o…

Cariogenic Potential of Lactose-Free Infant Formulas: An In Vitro Analysis of Streptococcus mutans Biofilm and Acidogenicity.

AIM: Lactose-free infant formulas (LFs) are commonly used for children with lactose intolerance, but their potential contribution to early childhood caries (ECC) remains poorly understood, particularly with varying sugar compositions. The present study aimed to assess the biofilm-forming ability, acidogenicity, and structural biofilm characteristics of LFs with and without sucrose using a Streptococcus mutans in vitro model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two LFs (with and without 24% sucrose) were tested alongside brain heart infusion (BHI) (negative control) and BHI + 10% sucrose (positive control)…

Comparison of aroma properties of infant formulas: Differences in key aroma compounds and their possible origins in processing.

Aroma is an important attribute of infant formula (IF). In this study, 218 volatiles and 62 odor-active compounds were detected from IF by dynamic headspace sampling combined with comprehensive 2-dimensional gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrometry. Aldehydes and ketones were determined as the most abundant odor-active compounds. Among them, the contents of pentanal and hexanal were the most abundant, while 1-octen-3-one had the highest flavor dilution factor and odor activity value in most of the IF. Sensory evaluation and electronic nose analysis showed that the skimming process, th…

Using feeding to reduce pain during vaccination of formula-fed infants: a randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and potential side effects of formula feeding to reduce pain during vaccination among infants. STUDY DESIGN: In the setting of well-baby clinics we recruited a community-based sample of full-term born infants who were already formula fed by the choice of the parents (n=48, aged 4-10 weeks) and received their first DTaP-IPV-HepB-Hib and pneumococcal vaccinations and randomised them into two groups. To evaluate pain experienced during vaccination we compared infants who drank formula feeding before, during and after vaccination with infants who did not. O

[Effect of breastfeeding versus formula milk feeding on preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the importance of breastfeeding in preterm infants with various gestational ages. METHODS: A total of 639 preterm infants with a gestational age of 28+3-36+6 weeks were enrolled, and according to the feeding pattern, they were divided into exclusive breastfeeding group (n=237) and formula milk feeding group (fed with liquid milk for preterm infants; n=402). These two feeding patterns were compared in terms of their effects on weight gain, laboratory markers including albumin (Alb) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), incidence rate of feeding intolerance, and incidence ra

The aetiology of diarrhoea, pneumonia and respiratory colonization of HIV-exposed infants randomized to breast- or formula-feeding.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoea and pneumonia are common causes of childhood death in sub-Saharan Africa but there are few studies describing specific pathogens. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to describe the pathogens associated with diarrhoea, pneumonia and oropharyngeal colonization in children born to HIV-infected women (HIV-exposed infants). METHODS: The Mashi Study randomized 1200 HIV-infected women and their infants to breastfeed for 6 months with ZDV prophylaxis or formula-feed with 4 weeks of ZDV. Children were tested for HIV by PCR at 1, 4, 7, 9 and 12 months and by ELISA at 18 months. Pre-defi

Vertical Cytomegalovirus Transmission From HIV-Infected Women Randomized to Formula-Feed or Breastfeed Their Infants.

BACKGROUND: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is associated with morbidity and mortality in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-exposed infants. We assessed the effect of and relative contribution of breastfeeding to CMV acquisition among infants delivered by HIV-infected mothers. METHODS: Between 1993 and 1998 pregnant, HIV-infected women in Nairobi, Kenya, were randomly assigned to breastfeed or formula-feed their infants in an HIV transmission study. Women were allocated equally between treatment arms, and the study was not blinded. The primary endpoint of this nested study was time to infant CMV infec

Rapid Determination of L-carnitine in Infant and Toddler Formulas by Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry.

A rapid and simple analytical method for L-carnitine was developed for infant and toddler formulas by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). A 0.3 g of infant formula and toddler formula sample was mixed in a 50 mL conical tube with 9 mL water and 1 mL 0.1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) to chemical extraction. Then, chloroform was used for removing a lipid fraction. After centrifuged, L-carnitine was separated and quantified using LC-MS/MS with electrospray ionization (ESI) mode. The precursor ion for L-carnitine was m/z 162, and product ions were m/z 103 (quantitative) and m/z …

Risks of milk formulas containing peanut oil contaminated with peanut allergens in infants with atopic dermatitis.

Four cases of infants with atopic dermatitis are reported. In all cases, a sensitization to peanut is demonstrated. Any ingestion of peanuts can be excluded, with the exception of a daily consumption of peanut oil, contained in milk formulas. Oral challenges with peanut oil induce a rash, and elimination of these brands is followed by the disappearance of eczematous lesions. The presence of residual allergenic proteins in peanut oil is thus suspected. Owing to the growing incidence of peanut hypersensitivity, the elimination of peanut oil from all milk formulas, food for babies, and ointments,

Partially Hydrolyzed Whey Infant Formula: Literature Review on Effects on Growth and the Risk of Developing Atopic Dermatitis in Infants from the General Population.

Limited evidence is available regarding the effect of partially hydrolyzed whey-based formula (pHF-W) on growth and atopic dermatitis (AD) risk reduction in infants within the general infant population, and without a familial history of allergy as an inclusion or exclusion criterion. We reviewed the current evidence available from studies using pHF-W in the general population and summarized the data on safety (growth) and efficacy outcomes (reduction of AD), comparing the studies side by side. A total of 8 clinical trials were identified from the literature search, 7 of which used the same pHF
