A new birth weight chart and optimal birth weight percentiles for predicting infant mortality.

Prescriptive BW charts can facilitate discrimination between normal and abnormal birthweight. This study aimed to develop a prescriptive BW chart specific to Asian populations and assess its utility in predicting infant mortality. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database and National Birth Reporting Database. This study included 2 956 475 live-born singleton infants born to healthy mothers with uncomplicated pregnancies in Taiwan from January 1, 2004, to December 31, 2019. BW percentiles were estimated from GA 24-42 weeks by …

Infant congenital heart disease prevalence and mortality in French Guiana: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed the prevalence and mortality of simple or complex congenital heart diseases (CHD) in newborns. In Latin America and Caribbean (LAC), CHD epidemiology seems highly variable, with few population-based assessments and different methodologies between studies. To date, the situation in French Guiana, a French overseas territory located in South America between Brazil and Suriname, has never been described. METHODS: We analysed CHD prevalence, characteristics and related infant mortality in French Guiana, with a population-based registry analysis of all fetal a…

Structural racism, racial inequities and urban-rural differences in infant mortality in the US.

BACKGROUND: While evidence shows considerable geographic variations in county-level racial inequities in infant mortality, the role of structural racism across urban-rural lines remains unexplored. The objective of this study was to examine the associations between county-level structural racism (racial inequity in educational attainment, median household income and jail incarceration) and infant mortality and heterogeneity between urban and rural areas. METHODS: Using linked live birth/infant death data provided by the National Center for Health Statistics, we calculated overall and race-spe…

Trend in infant mortality rate caused by sepsis in Brazil from 2009 to 2018.

Sepsis is the organ dysfunction resulting from an infection associated with an unregulated host inflammatory response, which generates high mortality rates in Brazil. The aim of this stydy was to analyze the trend of early, late and post-neonatal mortality rates due to sepsis in Brazilian regions, from 2009 to 2018. This is an ecological study of time series. The trend of infant mortality from sepsis was analyzed using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD10) according to the place of residence (North, Northeast, Southeast, South and Midwest). Death Certificate data were collected …

Affluent-Born White Mother's Descending Neighborhood Income and Infant Mortality: A Population-Based Study.

Objectives To determine whether affluent-born White mother's descending neighborhood income is associated with infant mortality rates (< 365 day, IMR). Methods Stratified and multilevel logistic regression analyses were completed on the Illinois transgenerational dataset of singleton births (1989-1991) to non-Latina White mothers (1956-1976) with an early-life residence in affluent neighborhoods (defined as the fourth quartile of income distribution). The breadth of descending neighborhood income was defined by mother's neighborhood income at the time of delivery. Results Infants of White moth…

Delivery indications at late-preterm gestations and infant mortality rates in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: The rate of preterm births has been increasing in the United States, especially for births 34 to 36 weeks of gestation (late preterm), which now constitute 71% of all preterm births. The causes for these trends remain unclear. We characterized the delivery indications for late preterm births and their potential impact on neonatal and infant mortality rates. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using the 2001 US Birth Cohort Linked birth/death files of 3 483 496 singleton births, we categorized delivery indications as follows: (1) maternal medical conditions; (2) obstetric complications; (3) major…

Secular trends in excess fetal and infant mortality using perinatal periods of risk analysis.

Perinatal periods of risk (PPOR) provide an alternative analytical approach to studying infant mortality. Results can be used to focus community activities to improve infant and maternal health. This article demonstrates the use of PPOR to monitor trends in excess fetal and infant mortality related to disparities associated with race and ethnicity in Kansas City, MO (KC). Based on a comparison of PPOR analyses for 1996-2000 and 2001-2005, there was a 30% reduction in excess fetal and infant mortality in Kansas City and reductions for both non-Hispanic blacks (17%) and non-Hispanic whites (66.7…

Maternal bacterial vaginosis and fetal/infant mortality in eight Florida counties, 1999 to 2000.

This study determined the prevalence of maternal bacterial vaginosis (BV) in fetal/infant mortality cases and factors associated with BV. A retrospective descriptive study was utilized. Data were obtained from review of vital statistics and medical records of 176 women experiencing fetal/infant deaths in eight Florida counties, 1999 to 2000. Non-White mothers accounted for 68.96% of deaths (chi square = 10.119, df = 4, p = 0.038), although the population of the eight counties was 64% White. Of 121 non-White mothers (68.8%) with infections, 37 (30.6%) had BV. Most fetal/infant deaths (39.7%) oc…
