Fear, disgust, and information processing in specific phobia: the application of signal detection theory.

A growing body of research suggests that individuals with small animal and blood-injection-injury (BII) phobias respond to phobia-relevant stimuli with a combination of fear and disgust. Despite the recognition that disgust may serve a functional role in phobic avoidance behavior, little is known about biased information processing for disgust-related material. Two studies examined recognition memory, using signal detection analyses, for phobia-relevant and general disgust pictures. Study I failed to find differences between spider phobics, BII phobics, and nonphobics in discrimination ability

The Connections Between Alexithymia, Childhood Maltreatment, Impulsivity and Extreme Sensory Processing Patterns in Relation to Bipolar Symptoms in Inpatients With Bipolar Disorder.

Childhood maltreatment, alexithymia and impulsivity are related to bipolar disorder (BD), but the role of potential underlying mechanisms of this link, such as extreme sensory processing, in BD are unclear. This study compared sensory processing patterns between individuals with BD-I or BD-II and between those with and without alexithymia and childhood maltreatment. Additionally, the study aimed to examine the role of extreme sensory processing in the relationship between childhood trauma, alexithymia and impulsivity with both depression and mania in a sample of hospitalized individuals with B

Pain-Related Activity Management Patterns as Predictors of Treatment Outcomes in Patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine if pre- to post-treatment changes in pain-related activity patterns (i.e., overdoing, avoidance, and pacing) were associated with pre- to post-treatment changes in function (i.e., pain interference, psychological function, and physical function) in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome who participated in either an operant learning- or an energy conservation-based training in activity management. METHODS: Sixty-nine patients with fibromyalgia syndrome participated in an activity management treatment (32 in an operant learning group and 37 in an energy

A test of the CaR-FA-X mechanisms and depression in adolescents.

People who have depression have difficulty recalling specific autobiographical information (Sumner, (2011) The mechanisms underlying overgeneral autobiographical memory: An evaluative review of evidence for the Ca R-FA-X model. Clinical Psychology Review, 3231(1), 34-48). This is called overgeneral autobiographical memory (OGM) and is associated with the development and persistence of depression. Williams, Barnhofer, Crane, Hermans, Raes, Watkins, & Dalgleish (2007 Autobiographical memory specificity and emotional disorder. Psychological Bulletin, 133(1), 122-148) proposed that OGM is maintain

Situational panic attacks in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Panic attacks (PAs) are common in many psychiatric disorders other than panic disorder, especially social anxiety disorder (SAD). PAs have been associated with increased severity, comorbidity, and impairment in many disorders; therefore, PAs can now be used as a descriptive specifier across all DSM-5 disorders. However, the clinical implications of PAs in SAD remain unclear. METHODS: The aim of the present investigation was to examine demographic and clinical characteristics associated with SAD-related situational panic attacks in a large, representative epidemiological sample of

Maladaptive turning and gaze behavior induces impaired stepping on multiple footfall targets during gait in older individuals who are at high risk of falling.

It was recently reported that the measurement of stepping accuracy while performing a new walking test, a multi-target stepping task (MTST), could contribute to identifying older individuals at high risk (HR) of falling. The present study was designed to identify factors leading HR older individuals to an impaired stepping performance in terms of frequency of maladaptive turning behavior (spin turn) and spatio-temporal patterns of fixations. Eleven HR (80.8±3.6 years), 26 low-risk (LR) (77.1±7.7 years) older individuals, and 20 younger individuals performed the MTST. For the MTST, stepping acc

Anger response styles and blood pressure: at least don't ruminate about it!

BACKGROUND: Research on anger suggests a link with blood pressure (BP), but the findings are complex and highly variable; this is at least partly attributable to measurement issues. PURPOSE: In this study we used a new model of anger responding that comprises 6 independent anger response styles in 2 dimensions: Aggression, Assertion, Social Support Seeking, Diffusion, Avoidance, and Rumination. Linear and interactive relations between the anger response styles and resting and ambulatory BP were tested, controlling for traditional risk factors and level of hostility. METHODS: Data from 2 samp

Effects of aging on whole body and segmental control while obstacle crossing under impaired sensory conditions.

The ability to safely negotiate obstacles is an important component of independent mobility, requiring adaptive locomotor responses to maintain dynamic balance. This study examined the effects of aging and visual-vestibular interactions on whole-body and segmental control during obstacle crossing. Twelve young and 15 older adults walked along a straight pathway and stepped over one obstacle placed in their path. The task was completed under 4 conditions which included intact or blurred vision, and intact or perturbed vestibular information using galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS). Global ta

Optometric management of optically induced consecutive exotropia.

A 5-1/2 year old black female initially presenting with a moderate angle esotropia and latent hyperopia developed a large angle constant exotropia 2 years after final correction of her refractive error. The occurrence of consecutive exotropia as a result of optical correction of hyperopia has been documented infrequently in the ophthalmologic literature and has rarely been mentioned in the optometric literature. While the overall risk for occurrence of this complication from correction of hyperopia may be small, it is a problem which may occur and can be avoided. Unfortunately, there is only l

Studies of avoidable factors influencing death: a call for explicit criteria.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse studies evaluating cases of potentially "avoidable" death. DESIGN: The definitions, sources of information, and methods were reviewed with a structured protocol. The different types of avoidable factors,--that is, deficiencies in medical care that may have contributed to death--were categorised. The presence of explicit classifications and standards was examined. basic criteria for quality of the studies were defined and the numbers of studies fulfilling these criteria were assessed. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: 65 studies, published during 1988-93 in peer reviewed medical

Does repetitive negative thinking affect attention? Differential effects of worry and rumination on attention to emotional stimuli.

Worry and rumination, two cardinal responses to emotional events, are key for maintaining negative emotion and have been implicated in the etiology and maintenance of anxiety and depressive disorders. Though worry and rumination are highly correlated with one another and people who engage in one often engage in both, they may differentially affect emotion. Specifically, previous work suggests that worry helps people avoid (intense) emotion, while rumination provokes it. Examining the ways in which these two forms of repetitive negative thinking (RNT) influence cognitive processing of emotional

Community-Led Total Sanitation, Open Defecation Free Status, and Ebola Virus Disease in Lofa County, Liberia.

The Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic entered Liberia through Lofa County in February 2014 and spread to two health districts where the nongovernmental organization Global Communities had been implementing community-led total sanitation (CLTS) since 2012. By December 2014 the county had 928 Ebola cases (422 of them confirmed) and 648 deaths. Before the epidemic, CLTS was triggered in 155 communities, and 98 communities were certified as Open Defecation Free (ODF). Using mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, we determined that no cases of EVD were found in ODF communities and in only one
