Mathematical models of the effectiveness and persistence of mosquito repellents.

Two models of the effectiveness and persistence of mosquito repellents on the skin were developed from published functions and data. The probit plane model, Y = a + b1X1 + b2X2, relates the response (Y, in probits) of the mosquito test population to the log dose (X1) of repellent applied and the test period, or elapsed time from the time of application (X2). The exponential decay model, Z = X1 + (b2/b1)X2, estimates the repellent residue (log-1 Z) from X1 and X2. The models were validated with original data from tests of deet (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) and ethyl hexanediol (2-ethyl-1,3-he

Mathematical modeling predicts that endemics by generalist insects are eradicated if nearly all plants produce constitutive defense.

Plants with constitutive defense chemicals exist widely in nature. The phenomenon is backed by abundant data from plant chemical ecology. Sufficient data are also available to conclude that plant defenses act as deterrent and repellent to attacking herbivores, particularly deleterious generalist insects. In the wild, generalist species are usually not endemic, meaning they are not restricted to certain plant species in a region. Therefore, our objective is to inspect theoretically whether evolution of chemical defenses in all plant species eradicate an endemic by any generalist species. The ob

The effects of human volatiles produced by skin microbiota on Forcipomyia (Lasiohelea) taiwana host preference.

BACKGROUND: Midges are widely distributed globally. They can transmit numerous serious diseases when biting hosts. It is crucial for developing more effective midge monitoring and control methods to better understand how host volatiles attract and repel these blood-sucking insects. RESULTS: In this work, volatile substances from human skin were detected by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 25 compounds in relatively high contents were identified from the gauzes adsorbing volatiles of eight volunteers, including ketones, aldehydes, alcohols and acids. Nonanal, 6

A Stellera chamaejasme-derived multifunctional biocomposite with antibacterial, mosquito-repellent, and biodegradable properties.

The increasing threat of healthcare-associated infections and mosquito-borne diseases demands new materials that combine antimicrobial protection, insect repellency, and biocompatibility. Here, we convert Stellera chamaejasme L. (SC), an ecologically harmful invasive weed, into a multifunctional biocomposite (SCZrB/WPU) by integrating SC root fibers, bamboo waste, zirconium phosphate (ZrP), and waterborne polyurethane (WPU). The resulting material exhibits >99.99% antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus and E. coli, and >89.5% repellency against Aedes albopictus. It releases only 0.14 mg L-1

Occupationally Acquired Plasmodium knowlesi Malaria in Brunei Darussalam.

Simian malaria is a zoonotic disease caused by Plasmodium knowlesi infection. The common natural reservoir of the parasite is the macaque monkey and the vector is the Anopheles mosquito. Human cases of P. knowlesi infection has been reported in all South East Asian countries in the last decade, and it is currently the most common type of malaria seen in Malaysia and Brunei. Between 2007-2017, 73 cases of P. knowlesi infection were notified and confirmed to the Ministry of Health in Brunei. Of these, 15 cases (21%) were documented as work-related, and 28 other cases (38%) were classified as pro

[Paederus dermatitis: A retrospective study of 74 cases occurring in 2008 in Guinea-Conakry].

BACKGROUND: Paederus dermatitis is an unusual form of contact dermatitis caused by pederine, a secretion of insects belonging to the genus Paederus. These insects are found worldwide, although the concentration is higher in tropical and subtropical areas. Diagnosis is based on the presence of typical clinical features (erythematobullous lesions of sudden onset with a stinging, burning sensation on exposed areas of the body) combined with a compatible epidemiological context. In West Africa, more particularly in Guinea-Conakry, paederus dermatitis is common at the end of the rainy season. Our a

Neurological disorders and travel.

Travel is associated with a number of neurological disorders that can be divided into two categories: (1) Neurological infections including encephalitides, neurotuberculosis, neurobrucellosis, cysticercosis and trichinosis. Some of these disorders can be prevented by vaccinations, such as Japanese B encephalitis and rabies, some by the use of insect repellents and some by avoiding raw milk products and undercooked meat. (2) Non-infective neurological disorders, such as acute mountain sickness and high altitude cerebral oedema, problems occurring during air travel such as syncope, seizures, str…

Dysphania schraderiana (Schult.) Mosyakin & Clemants - An overlooked medicinal and ritual plant used in Poland.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The paper discusses the traditional ritual, medicinal and insect repellent use of Dysphania schraderiana in Poland, a plant with little ethnobotanical and phytochemical data. Our research suggests that its properties should be further studied comparing it with the related D. botrys and D. ambrosioides. AIM OF THE WORK: D. schraderiana is an aromatic and medicinal annual herb related to D. ambrosioides and D. botrys and practically absent from historical accounts of plant uses in Europe. The aim of this work is to characterise the current use of D. schraderiana

Health surveillance among a team of Australian health workers assisting tsunami victims in Aceh, Indonesia.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent and nature of health-related behaviours and outcomes among members of the first foreign medical team to arrive in Aceh, following the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. METHODS: A cross sectional survey of team members 4 weeks after return from Aceh. RESULTS: Compliance with antimalarial chemoprophylaxis and insect repellent was high while in Aceh, but only one-third completed the course of chemoprophylaxis. The provision of prepackaged food and water was likely to have prevented enteric disease. Members reported mosquito bites, fatigue, sunburn, headache and anxi

Insecticidal and Repellent Properties of Rapid-Acting Fluorine-Containing Compounds against Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes.

The development of safe and potent insecticides remains an integral part of a multifaceted strategy to effectively control human-disease-transmitting insect vectors. Incorporating fluorine can dramatically alter the physiochemical properties and bioavailability of insecticides. For example, 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-fluorophenyl)ethane (DFDT)─a difluoro congener of trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT)─was demonstrated previously to be 10-fold less toxic to mosquitoes than DDT in terms of LD50 values, but it exhibited a 4-fold faster knockdown. Described herein is the discovery of fluo

Functional characterization of CaspOR20 involved in repellency of 1-penten-3-ol, sulcatone, and methyl salicylate against the rape stem weevil Ceutorhynchus asper.

The rape stem weevil (Ceutorhynchus asper) is a devastating pest of cruciferous crops, and its management heavily relies on insecticides, leading to resistance development and environmental concerns. CaspOR20 is a highly expressed odorant receptor in the antennae of C. asper, yet its functional role remains unclear. In this study, by using the transgenic Drosophila expression system combined with single sensillum recordings, we identified six volatile compounds (1-penten-3-ol, 2-heptanone, sulcatone, methyl salicylate, benzaldehyde, and ethyl acetate) as ligands for CaspOR20. Subsequent electr

Field evaluation of a volatile pyrethroid spatial repellent and etofenprox treated clothing for outdoor protection against forest malaria vectors in Cambodia.

Cambodia's goal to eliminate malaria by 2025 is challenged by persistent transmission in forest and forest fringe areas, where people are exposed to Anopheles mosquito bites during the day and night. Volatile pyrethroid spatial repellents (VPSRs) and insecticide-treated clothing (ITC) could address these gaps. This study evaluated the outdoor application of one passive transfluthrin-based VPSR, four etofenprox-ITCs paired with a picaridin topical repellent, and a combination of VPSR and ITC against wild Anopheles landing in Cambodia. A 7 × 7 Latin-square study was conducted over 49 collection

Indoor protection against mosquito and sand fly bites: a comparison between citronella, linalool, and geraniol candles.

The repellent effect of 3 essential-oil-based candles was evaluated in a high biting pressure environment in Israel. In human landing assays, the repellency rate of 5% citronella candles against mosquitoes was 29.0%, of 5% linalool candles was 71.1%, and of 5% geraniol candles was 85.4%. The candles with geraniol were about twice as effective as those with linalool and were about 5 times as effective as citronella candles in protecting a person from being bitten indoors by mosquitoes. The repellency rate of 5% citronella candles towards sand flies was 24.7%, of 5% linalool candles was 55.2%, a

The potential economic benefits of controlling trypanosomiasis using waterbuck repellent blend in sub-Saharan Africa.

Trypanosomiasis is a significant productivity-limiting livestock disease in sub-Saharan Africa, contributing to poverty and food insecurity. In this paper, we estimate the potential economic gains from adopting Waterbuck Repellent Blend (WRB). The WRB is a new technology that pushes trypanosomiasis-transmitting tsetse fly away from animals, improving animals' health and increasing meat and milk productivity. We estimate the benefits of WRB on the production of meat and milk using the economic surplus approach. We obtained data from an expert elicitation survey, secondary and experimental sourc
