[Specifications of motivational interviewing within a cognitive-behavioral therapy of chronic pain].

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive and behavioral approach of chronic pain presents encouraging results by improving physical, functional and psychological states of chronic pain patients. This specific treatment is partially based on the acquisition of new adaptive strategies to help the patients to manage more effectively chronic pain and to improve subsequently their subjective well-being. This requires in parallel to give up noxious emotional, cognitive and behavioral attitudes towards pain. Now, we have to admit that numerous therapeutic failures are directly imputable to difficulties introducing and

Adolescent perceptions of the National Lottery and scratchcards: a qualitative study using group interviews.

Recent research has consistently shown that a small but significant minority of youth engage in illegal lottery and scratchcard gambling. It is clear that most adolescents experience few gambling-related problems as a result of lotteries and scratchcards. However, it is less clear how gambling may be affecting them at a more general level. The present study set out to examine in more detail the perceptions identified in a previous survey. The study provided an opportunity for the participants to articulate and outline what they thought were the most salient issues through the use of semi-struc

Psychophysiological effects of interviews about emotional events on offspring of hypertensives and normotensives.

Normotensive individuals with a parental history of hypertension have been found to exhibit greater cardiovascular reactivity to a variety of laboratory stressors than offspring of normotensives. To examine the possible generalization of these differences to real-life stressors, subjects were administered four brief interviews about different emotional events in their lives. Regardless of emotional content, offspring of hypertensives displayed greater systolic blood pressure responses to the non-verbal recollection and verbal description of personal emotional events, but not to the imagination

Visual hallucinations in psychologically normal people: Charles Bonnet's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Charles Bonnet's Syndrome (CBS), characterised by the presence of complex visual hallucinations in psychologically normal people, was considered for a long time to be rare. Systematic research on CBS has been limited. However, it has been realised that CBS occurs frequently in elderly, visually handicapped patients, and we have been able to study the syndrome in a large number of patients. METHODS: After screening 505 visually handicapped patients, 60 were found to meet proposed diagnostic criteria for CBS (generally, the existence of hallucinations without delusions or loss of in

Psychological aspects in children and adolescents with hypopituitarism.

Psychological studies in children with stunted growth have partly shown inconsistent results due to heterogeneity of samples and the use of non-standardized test procedures. We have examined patients with proven hypopituitarism using a selection of standardized and age-related psychological tests. Forty-eight patients, 32 male, 16 female, age 6 to 26 years with isolated growth hormone deficiency (n = 22) and multiple pituitary deficiencies (n = 26) were investigated. The patients had had hormonal substitution therapy for 0.1-16.8 years. Test procedures included evaluation of intelligence and v

The phenomenology of schizophrenia occurring in childhood.

Thirty-five children, aged 4 to 13 (X = 9.54), meeting strict DSM-III criteria for schizophrenia, are described. The subjects were diagnosed using a new semistructured interview. All were in the normal range of intelligence (mean IQ = 94) and free of neurological disorders. Characteristic auditory hallucinations were present in 80% and delusions in 63% of the sample. The mean age of onset of psychotic symptoms was 6.9 years. Premorbid histories of attention deficit, conduct disturbance and/or developmental abnormalities were common. The nature and content of psychotic symptoms varied with deve

Other psychiatric disorders among bulimic patients.

Clinical experience suggests that bulimia nervosa is a disorder often accompanied by additional psychiatric symptoms. Based on unstructured clinical interviews, 21 additional Axis I and six Axis II diagnoses were assigned to a sample of 30 bulimic women. The Structured Clinic Interview for DSM-III-Patient Version (SCID-P) generated 47 additional Axis I and 78 Axis II diagnoses. There was little agreement across measures in the assessment of mood disturbance. These results not only suggest a greater degree of pathology in bulimic women, but also raise important questions regarding the measureme

Behaviour analysis and treatment of essential hypertensives.

Various relaxation techniques have the potential to bring about promising blood pressure (BP) reductions in essential hypertension; but the treatment gains often fail to be sustained over a prolonged period of time. Until now, behavioural treatment approaches have not included efforts to increase patient awareness of situations that provoke BP elevations. In our study, numerous BP measurements were therefore taken In various situations by approximately 120 essential hypertensives. These measures were used to acquaint the patients with their own BP variability, to help them understand psycholog

Psychological factors influencing donors' decision-making pattern in living-donor liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that living liver donors may develop psychological or psychosocial impairments after transplantation, although the majority of them do not develop much difficulties. Their postoperative psychological prognosis may be affected by the way they made their decision to donate. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of donors' preoperative psychological factors with the processes of their individual decision-making to donate and their family-level decision-making to select one donor among themselves. METHODS: A total of 165 living liver donor c

Relationship of prenatal cocaine exposure and maternal postpartum psychological distress to child developmental outcome.

Maternal cocaine use during pregnancy can affect the infant directly through toxic effects or indirectly through cocaine's influence on maternal psychological status. We followed 160 cocaine exposed and 56 nonexposed infants and their mothers identified at birth through interview and/or urine screen. Although cocaine exposure defined the groups, infant exposure to alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco was allowed to vary. Infants were 99% African American and poor. All mothers completed the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and infants were given the Bayley Scales of Mental (MDI) and Motor (PDI) Develop

The Role of Agonistic Striving in the Association Between Cortisol and High Blood Pressure.

OBJECTIVE: A social action theory of chronic stress proposes that agonistic striving (seeking to influence or control others) impairs cardiovascular health by magnifying the impact of high adversity-induced cortisol levels on blood pressure. We tested three predictions of social action theory: (1) the social action theory taxonomy of regulatory strivings characterizes young adults from high-adversity neighborhoods; (2) high cortisol levels predict high blood pressure more reliably in the subgroup with the agonistic striving profile than in subgroups with other profiles; (3) the association of

Visual Hallucinations in Older People: Appraisals but not Content or Phenomenology Influence Distress.

BACKGROUND: A previous study (Gauntlett-Gilbert and Kuipers, 2005) has suggested that distress associated with complex visual hallucinations (CVHs) in younger adults with psychosis may more strongly relate to appraisals of meaning than to the content of the hallucination. However, visual hallucinations are most commonly seen in the disorders of later life, where this relationship has not been investigated. AIM: To establish if there is a relationship between appraisals of CVHs and distress in older, non-psychotic people with CVHs. METHOD: All variables were measured using a semi-structured i
