Dental caries experience of children with haemophilia in Northern Ireland.

It is generally agreed that persons suffering from haemophilia from a priority group for dental care. The present study compares the prevalence of dental caries in haemophilic children in Northern Ireland with the reported values for similarly aged children in the population. The prevalence of caries experience and of untreated caries were low in the haemophiliacs in both the primary and permanent dentitions. No teeth had been extracted due to caries and a high level of fluoride usage was claimed. The dental care of these patients is carried out at the regional treatment centre and forms an in…

Mercury allergy in a contact dermatitis clinic in Northern Ireland.

441 consecutive patients (294 female, 147 male) with suspected contact dermatitis were patch tested to the European standard series, mercury metal (1% pet), ammoniated mercury (1% pet.), and mercuric chloride (0.1% aq.). 14 patients (3.2%), 12 of whom were female, showed a positive response to 1 or more mercury compounds; none reacted to mercuric chloride alone. Primary sensitization was most likely due to either inoculation with vaccines containing merthiolate preservatives or amalgam dental restorations. Mercury allergy was of historical clinical relevance in only 2 patients, both women who

Two serovars of the Australis group bratislava and muenchen, were identified.

Assessment of prevalence of clinical babesiosis in cattle in Northern Ireland.

Information on the number of clinical cases of bovine babesiosis in Northern Ireland was gathered from three sources: (a) a representative sample of farms; (b) all veterinary practices normally attending cattle; (c) the drug companies which produce babesicide. From (a) an estimate of 4520 clinical cases per year was derived, from (b) 3923 and from (c) 5600. A resultant estimate of at least 4000 cases per year was assumed to be reasonable. The mortality rate overall was 17.4 per cent but ranged from 8.8 per cent to 100 per cent on one farm. A final estimate of 12.5 per cent mortality was assume…

Doctor Retention or Migration: From Ireland to the World? Comment on "Doctor Retention: A Cross-sectional Study of How Ireland Has Been Losing the Battle".

The recent study of prospective doctor migration and retention suggests that more than half of junior doctors intend to migrate from Ireland. While intent is not necessarily outcome, such intentions match similar survey results in Ireland and elsewhere. The rationale for migration is described as a function of difficult workplace circumstances (notably long hours and mismanagement). Lifestyle factors may however also be important for both migration and significant levels of return migration. These are related to family formation, and to an established culture of migration, that has contributed…

Psychodermatology in Ireland: current practices, confidence and barriers among dermatologists.

In this study, we surveyed Irish dermatologists and highlight that the majority lack formal training in psychodermatology but are cognisant in recognizing mental health issues in patients with chronic dermatological diseases. Access to psychology remains significantly limited and there is an urgent need for interdisciplinary collaboration and standardization of referral pathways to bridge the gap between dermatology, psychology and psychiatry in Ireland.

Epidemiology of Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury in Ireland, 2010-2015.

BACKGROUND: The International Spinal Cord Society and World Health Organisation recommend the collection of epidemiological data on traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI). A 1-year prospective study is ongoing in Ireland. While the results of this study are awaited, it was concluded from a feasibility exercise that a complete retrospective dataset, 2010-2015, could be obtained and would be useful for service planning. METHODS: All patients with TSCI discharged from the national SCI acute and rehabilitation centres were included. Data was collected on gender, age, aetiology, level of injury, Amer…

Occurrence of major complications after cochlear implant surgery in Ireland.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implantation (CI) is considered an effective and relatively safe procedure for patients with severe-profound hearing loss. However, severe complications are reported in several studies. The purpose of this study was to report the frequency and management of major complications following CI surgery at the National CI Programme (NCIP) in Ireland. METHODS: Major complications were defined according to the classification of Hansen et al. 2010. The medical records of 1017 patients undergoing CI between 1995 and 2016 were analyzed retrospectively for major complications. In add…

Midwife-led maternity care in Ireland - a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Midwife-led maternity care is shown to be safe for women with low-risk during pregnancy. In Ireland, two midwife-led units (MLUs) were introduced in 2004 when a randomised controlled trial (the MidU study) was performed to compare MLU care with consultant-led care (CLU). Following study completion the two MLUs have remained as a maternity care option in Ireland. The aim of this study was to evaluate maternal and neonatal outcomes and transfer rates during six years in the larger of the MLU sites. METHODS: MLU data for the six years 2008-2013 were retrospectively analysed, followin…

Hormonal contraceptive use in Ireland: trends and co-prescribing practices.

Hormonal contraceptives are highly prevalent. Currently, little is known about Irish hormonal contraceptive trends to date since the 1995 British media contraceptive controversy. Approximately 40% of the Irish population are prescribed 70% of total medicines under the Irish GMS scheme. Medicines were identified using the WHO Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification system. Regression analysis was used to examin…

Underreporting of viral encephalitis and viral meningitis, Ireland, 2005-2008.

Viral encephalitis (VE) and viral meningitis (VM) have been notifiable infectious diseases under surveillance in the Republic of Ireland since 1981. Laboratories have reported confirmed cases by detection of viral nucleic acid in cerebrospinal fluid since 2004. To determine the prevalence of these diseases in Ireland during 2005-2008, we analyzed 3 data sources: Hospital In-patient Enquiry data (from hospitalized following patients discharge) accessed through Health Intelligence Ireland, laboratory confirmations from the National Virus Reference Laboratory, and events from the Computerised Inf…
