The aim of this survey was to describe the incidence, epidemiology, microbiology, risk factors and outcome of medical care related laboratory-confirmed bloodstream infections (LCBIs) observed during a twelve-month prospective study in a Paediatric Teaching Hospital in Turin, Italy. Inclusion criteria were clinical signs of sepsis and positivity of one or more of the following tests: blood culture, polymerase chain reaction for bacterial and fungal DNA on blood, and culture on intravascular device tips. In all, 140 episodes of sepsis were documented in 131 children: 37 (26.4%) were healthcare o

INTRODUCTION: Canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) is a zoonotic disease with different clinical manifestations. Parasitism often occurs in bone marrow, but changes have been observed in peripheral blood and serum biochemical parameters. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hematological and biochemical parameters in dogs naturally infected by Leishmania chagasi.
METHODS: Eighty-five adult dogs of both sexes and various weights and ages from the Zoonosis Control Center of Fortaleza (CCZ) were used, selected by immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and considered positive with IFA titers greater

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus that has several similarities to Staphylococcus aureus. S. lugdunensis is increasingly being recognized as a cause of prosthetic joint infection (PJI). The goal of the present retrospective cohort study was to determine the laboratory and clinical characteristics of S. lugdunensis PJIs seen at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, between 1 January 1998 and 31 December 2007. Kaplan-Meier survival methods and Wilcoxon sum-rank analysis were used to determine the cumulative incidence of treatment success and assess subset comparisons.

AIMS: In the absence of IgM antibodies against hepatitis A virus (HAV), HAV infections can be regarded as autoimmune hepatitis when they show positive autoantibodies by indirect immunofluorescence and lack other viral markers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence, titres and impact of autoantibodies in Korean patients with HAV infection.
METHODS: The study involved a retrospective review of the electronic medical records of 73 patients with HAV at Konkuk University Hospital from August 2005 to September 2008. The presence and pattern of anti-nuclear antibody, anti-smooth muscl

OBJECTIVE: Kingella kingae, a Gram-negative coccobacillus, is being increasingly recognized as an invasive pathogen in children, causing mainly bacteremia and arthritis; however, there have been only a few studies on K kingae infections to date, mostly small-scale series. The aim of this study was to report our experience with invasive K kingae infections in children who were hospitalized at a major tertiary medical center in Israel.
METHODS: The medical charts of 62 children with proven invasive K kingae infections were reviewed: 42 with positive blood culture results and 20 with positive sy

For the laboratory evaluation of the severity of intoxication syndrome, the spectral characteristics of low and median molecular weight substances (LMMWS) were studied in the plasma and red blood cells of 129 children with bacterial infections, among whom there were 76 children with acute intestinal infections (Flexner's dysentery, Sonne dysentery, and salmonellosis) and 53 children with bacterial purulent meningitis of hemophilic and meningococcal etiology. In the acute period, all the examinees were found to have considerable qualitative and quantitative distinctions of blood spectrograms fr

Clinical and public health laboratories have experienced unprecedented challenges in the form of demands to comply with revised regulations and economic pressures to be more efficient while preparing to respond to everything from pandemic influenza to bioterrorism. These forces have been an impetus for laboratorians to communicate, cooperate, and collaborate as never before and to seek the common ground where knowledge and resources can be shared to weather the profound economic and political forces at work today. The appearance of newly emerging and reemergent infections caused by agents of f

A laboratory woodchuck presented clinically with left-sided torticollis and a purulent exudate within the external auditory meatus of the left ear. Bacterial culture of the exudate resulted in a heavy growth of Pasteurella multocida. Treatment was initiated with topical and systemic antimicrobial compounds. There was no clinical improvement after 72 h of treatment, and euthanasia was elected. Radiographs correlated well with necropsy findings, confirming a diagnosis of otitis media; otitis interna was not confirmed but was suggested by the clinical presentation. To the authors knowledge, this

BACKGROUND: The orf virus of sheep and goats is one of several zoonotic parapoxviruses. In the ovine/caprine host it causes contagious ecthyma (contagious pustular dermatitis, scabby mouth), but in humans it normally causes solitary or clustered orf lesions, typically on hands, arms or face. In addition to disease in the animals, the virus can be quite a nuisance as an occupational hazard in farmers and butchers. Clinical diagnosis is often possible, but laboratory diagnosis is sometimes necessary. For virus isolation, primary ovine or bovine cells, not routinely present, are needed. Serologic

Odontogenic anaerobic sepsis was diagnosed using vapor-phase gas chromatographic analysis (VPGCA) for detecting volatile fatty acids--metabolites of anaerobic bacteria. The method is rapid and therefore diagnostically valuable. Rapid diagnosis of anaerobic odontogenic sepsis is to include detection of the clinical signs of anaerobic inflammation of the primary purulent focus and the clinical laboratory symptom complex of generalized infection and VPGCA of volatile fatty acids in the blood.

A case of laboratory-acquired typhoid fever is described. The case was complicated by a self-limiting Salmonella give gastroenteritis which may also have been laboratory-acquired and which occurred during the incubation period of the Salmonella typhi infection. The symptoms of typhoid were not sufficiently severe for the patient to seek medical attention and she was recovering from the infection when the typhoid bacillus was isolated from her stools. The mode of transmission of the S. typhi was presumed to be a laboratory infection from an unknown source. Although there was no obvious breakdow…

The serologic diagnosis of treponemal infections has depended in the past on a variety of tests in which specificity was defined on an epidemiologic rather than on an immunologic basis. The lipoidal antigen tests possess no immunologic specificity. Tests based on whole treponemal antigens, although they do have some immunologic specificity, react with antibodies other then those generated in the course of syphilis and yaws infections. Recent developments in biotechnology now permit the identification of immunologically specific antigens in Treponema pallidum, and cloning of appropriate genetic

The antimicrobial activity of cefoxitin against clinical isolated organisms was measured: Cefoxitin was more active than cefazolin and cephalothin against Escherichia coli. The serum concentrations of cefoxitin following intravenous injection of 25 mg/kg were 267.7, 38.8, 8.3 microgram/ml at 5, 30, 120 minutes after injection, respectively. Cefoxitin was excreted 90.5% in urine within 6 hours after injection. Cefoxitin was administered clinically to 22 pediatric patients with various infections (urinary tract infection 9, respiratory tract infection 10, S.S.S.S. 1, Salmonella enteritis 1, and

Cefamandole nafate was effective in the treatment of a variety of infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes group A, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae in infants and children. The infections included periorbital cellulitis and ethmoiditis, bacteremia, cellulitis, pneumonia, and lymphadenitis. In vitro, cefamandole was effective in inhibiting the growth of H. influenzae isolated from blood or cerebrospinal fluid of patients with meningitis or sepsis. In two patients rash developed and cefamandole was discontinued. Other significant adverse effects wer

Based on the proportion of resistant, moderately sensitive, and sensitive strains, the descending order of activity of amikacin against clinical isolates of urinary pathogens was Salmonella, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Citrobacter, Proteus species, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. However, amikacin was the most active of the antibiotics tested (including gentamicin and tobramycin) against 100 strains of P. aeruginosa. The calculated half-life of amikacin was substantially longer in patients with compromised renal function than in normal subjects. Immaturity of
