[Assessment of the state of the small intestine microbiota in children on a long-term dairy-free diet].

An overview of recent outcomes of studies indicates an imbalance in the diet of children. Quantitative and qualitative malnutrition of children is the basis of a number of childhood diseases. The aim of the research was to study the prevalence of small intestine bacterial overgrowth syndrome (SIBO) in children on a long-term dairy-free diet. Material and methods. 40 children aged 7-11 years following a long-term dairy-free diet (average 3 years and 5 months, from 0.5 to 6.3 years) were examined (main group). 30 children who did not follow restrictive diets were consisted control group. In all

Evaluation of small intestine bacterial overgrowth in patients with functional dyspepsia through H2 breath test.

CONTEXT: Functional dyspepsia is a condition in which symptoms are not related to organic underlying disease; its pathogenesis is not well known. The small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is characterized by the increase in the number and/or type of colonic bacteria in the upper gastrointestinal tract. The hypothesis of SIBO being associated to functional dyspepsia must be considered, since the impaired motility of the gastrointestinal tract is one of the main etiologic factors involved on both pathologies. OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is SIBO in patients with functional dyspepsia.

Fecal short-chain fatty acids in patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome: in vitro studies of carbohydrate fermentation.

Colonic bacterial production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) plays an important role in the salvage of unabsorbed carbohydrate and in colonic absorption of electrolytes and water. The objective of this study was to determine whether patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (DP-IBS) have a different pattern and rate of fermentation of carbohydrate and fiber to SCFA compared with controls. Fecal homogenates from 10 patients with DP-IBS and 10 age-matched controls were studied. SCFA were measured by gas chromatography in baseline fecal samples and in fecal homogenates in an i

Cochrane Review: Osmotic and stimulant laxatives for the management of childhood constipation (Review).

BACKGROUND: Constipation within childhood is an extremely common problem. Despite the widespread use of osmotic and stimulant laxatives by health professionals to manage constipation in children, there has been a long standing paucity of high quality evidence to support this practice. OBJECTIVES: We set out to evaluate the efficacy and safety of osmotic and stimulant laxatives used to treat functional childhood constipation. SEARCH METHODS: The search (inception to May 7, 2012) was standardised and not limited by language and included electronic searching (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central R

Goat milk protein digestibility in relation to intestinal function.

BACKGROUND: Milk is an important high-quality animal protein source in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although the true ileal digestibility and absorption of milk has been shown to be high in French adults, this may be lower in individuals from LMICs who are at risk of environmental enteropathy. OBJECTIVE: To determine the true ileal indispensable amino acid (IAA) digestibility of intrinsically labeled goat milk protein in South Indian women of reproductive age (WRA), using the dual-isotope tracer technique, and to measure intestinal absorption of amino acid and inert sugar in the

A volunteer model for the comparison of laxatives in opioid-related constipation.

Loperamide was used to provide a source of opioid-induced constipation in healthy volunteers. Each volunteer took a sequence of three dose levels of loperamide. One of three laxatives was used to counterbalance the effect of loperamide and restore bowel function to what the individual considered normal at each stage before the dose of loperamide was increased. Lactulose, senna, and codanthrusate were selected as examples of a softening, a stimulant, and a combination laxative, respectively. Outcome measures were the doses of laxative used, stool form and frequency, ease of defecation, a rating

Absorption of wheat starch in patients resected for left-sided colonic cancer.

Bacterial fermentation of carbohydrate in the colon, producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFA)--and especially butyrate--has been shown possibly to impede cell proliferation and regulate cell differentiation of colonocytes. In patients with diverticular disease or benign polyps in the colon a hyperabsorption of potato starch in the small intestine has been found. We have investigated the absorption of wheat starch in 15 patients radically resected for cancer in the descending or sigmoid colon, and the results were compared with those of 15 healthy controls. The starch malabsorption was quantifi

Overweight and obesity and their association with intestinal permeability, usual dietary intake, and serum retinol concentrations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obesity may affect gut health by altering the intestinal barrier function. Excess body fat disrupts plasma levels of fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin A, which is crucial for maintaining intestinal permeability. Thus, excess body fat and low retinol concentrations may contribute to intestinal barrier dysfunction in individuals, a condition that remains poorly understood in the context of overweight and obesity. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of overweight and obesity with intestinal barrier permeability, usual dietary intake, and serum retinol concentrat

NFSI mediated C3-ether oxidation of glycals for the synthesis of hex-3-enuloses.

Hex-3-enuloses constitute a vital carbohydrate synthetic intermediate that provide access to wide range of chiral molecules through diverse derivatizations. Herein we report synthesis of these fascinating scaffolds by oxidation of C3-ether protections on glycals in presence of N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide (NFSI) under Cu(I) catalysed conditions. Benzyl, methyl and silyl ethers have been efficiently oxidized to the carbonyl group. The oxidation has been found to be highly regioselective where an array of protecting groups were tolerant to the reaction conditions. Pyranosyl glycals from various co

Post-Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) Hepatic Encephalopathy-A Review of the Past Decade's Literature Focusing on Incidence, Risk Factors, and Prophylaxis.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is an established treatment for portal hypertension and its' complications in liver cirrhosis, yet the development of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) remains a significant concern. This review covers the reported incidence, risk factors, and management strategies for post-TIPS HE over the past decade. Incidence varies widely (7-61%), with factors like age, liver function, hyponatremia, and spontaneous portosystemic shunts influencing risk. Procedural aspects, including TIPS timing, indication, and stent characteristics, also contribute. Pharmaco
