Visceral larva migrans: migratory pattern of Toxocara canis in pigs.

The migratory pattern of Toxocara canis was investigated following infection of pigs with 60000 infective eggs. Groups of six pigs were slaughtered at 7, 14 and 28 days after infection (p.i.), and the number of larvae in selected organs and muscles was determined by digestion. A group of uninfected pigs was used as negative controls for blood parameters and weight gain. Toxocara canis migrated well in the pig, although the relative numbers of larvae recovered decreased significantly during the experiment. On day 7 p.i., high numbers of larvae were recovered from the lymph nodes around the smal…

Human toxocariasis and the visceral larva migrans syndrome: correlative immunopathology.

The surface of T. canis is now recognized as a dynamic structure which turns over quite rapidly and serves as a renewable source of large quantities of antigen(s). The major host responses to these antigens include a marked eosinophilia and hyperglobulinemia. Both of these responses are apparently ineffective at ridding the body of infective larvae. Both eosinphils and IgE antibodies are manifestations of the Th2 subset of T helper cells and the cytokines that they secrete. Further, there is reason to believe that the antigens released from T. canis larvae favor the induction of this cellular …

[Visceral larva migrans. A rare cause of eosinophilia in adults].

Toxocariasis is a cosmopolitan infection of dogs and cats with a roundworm resembling Ascaris. Man becomes infected by ingesting eggs from the environment. The infection occurs mainly in children. There are two distinct syndromes: visceral larva migrans and ocular toxocariasis. The author describes the case of a 70 year old Norwegian female with visceral larva migrans. One month after a visit to Spain she developed fever, hepatomegaly and marked eosinophilia. Liver biopsy revealed subacute hepatitis with eosinophilic leucocyte infiltration. Toxocara ELISA was strongly positive. Treatment with …

A human case of gastric anisakiasis by Pseudoterranova decipiens larva.

A case of gastric anisakiasis due to the larva of Pseudoterranova decipiens was confirmed by gastroendoscopic examination in April 23, 1991. The patient, residing in Pusan, was a 42-year-old housewife, who complained of severe epigastric pain and recalled that the symptom suddenly attacked her about 6 hours after eating raw Sebastes inermis. In the gastroendoscopic examination performed about 9 hours after the onset of the symptom, a long whitish nematode larva penetrating the gastric mucosa in the greater curvature of mid-body was found and removed with a biopsy forcep. The nematode was 29. 7…

Visceral larva migrans in French adults: a new disease syndrome?

Visceral larva migrans is apparently an endemic disease among adults in southwest France. Thirty-seven adults living in the Midi-Pyrenees region of France were confirmed as having visceral larva migrans based on an increased specific antibody titer to Toxocara canis as detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and by the Western blot method. The disease was characterized clinically by weakness, pruritus, rash, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, and pathologically by allergic manifestations including eosinophilia and increased serum immunoglobulin (Ig) E levels. Conditional logis…

[Mouse strain difference in visceral larva migrans of Toxocara canis].

The mode of larval migration (visceral larva migrans) in Toxocara canis infection was compared for BALB/c, C57BL/6, C3H/He, DBA/2, NC and BALB/c nude mice following oral infection with 400 eggs. The mean recovery of larvae from the liver on day 2 post infection (PI) was not different in terms of the strain, age or sex of the mice. The number of larvae recovered from the liver decreased in all strains on days 6, 12 and 21 PI, but the mean for BALB/c and (NC X BALB/c) F1 mice was significantly higher than that for C567BL/6, NC and BALB/c nude mice, unless the total number of larvae in the carcas…

Visceral larva migrans: a risk assessment in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Visceral larva migrans, VLM, is a disease of young children. Due to lack of awareness of the disease as well as its non-specific symptomology, a survey of the potential risk of acquiring the disease was conducted in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area. The greatest number of dogs showing positive results to tests for the presence of the eggs of Toxocara canis were those less than one year of age. Very few of the soil samples collected from twenty different parks/playgrounds were found to contain eggs of T. canis. A higher percentage of soil samples from individual yards proved to be contaminated w…

[Viscera larva migrans syndrome in children: description of a case].

The AA describe a case of Larva Migrans Visceral syndrome in a two year-old boy in systemic form with negative outcome. The autoptic examination showed a "granulomatous hepatitis with marked component of eosinophil cells'. The presence of "eosinophil granuloma' in liver has led to the diagnosis of Visceral Larva Migrans Syndrome; other possible causes of Ipereosinophilous Syndrome have been excluded on the basis of anamnestic, clinic and laboratory data. The discovery in the medical history of frequent contacts with a dog which was affected by a serious toxocara canis infections, has led to th…

[Visceral larva migrans infections caused by toxocara species (author's transl)].

A total of 4656 serum samples from suspect persons were investigated for Toxocara antibodies over the last 10 years. Using the Ouchterlony technique antibodies were demonstrated in 707 cases, and in 409 cases with the help of the microprecipitation test using secondary larvae. It was shown that the living larva test is highly specific and very sensitive so that a positive reaction can be taken as definite evidence of infection. Clinical symptoms were characterised by high eosinophilia, ophthalmologic changes, lung involvement, central nervous affection and increase of gamma-globulins. A histor…

Transmammary transmission of Necator americanus larva in the human host.

The prevalence of Necator americanus in the 128 nursing mothers at Saraburi hospital was 61%. The examination of milk from these mothers revealed the presence of N. americanus in one case. The finding suggested that milk could be a potential source of hookworm infection in man.
