Extracts of nematodes have been used as skin test antigens in the diagnosis of nematode infections for many years. Ascaris lumbricoides and Toxocara canis are two nematodes commonly involved in human parasitism, the latter being associated with the clinical condition of Visceral Larva Migrans. In vitro and in vivo experiments reported in this paper confirm experimentally, as well as clinically, the existence of cross-reacting antigens between T. canis and Ascaris spp., and probably between T. canis and other nematodes. These cross-reactions compromise the usefulness of skin tests in the diagno…

Cutaneous larva migrans is an acquired, self-limited infestation caused by cat hookworm, Ancylostoma braziliense, and dog hookworm, A. caninum The disease is acquired by direct contact with contaminated soil. Circumrotation is a religious ritual practised by devotees of Hinduism as a fulfilment of vows taken at the shrine and involves rolling over with uncovered upper body on the sand over a distance of up to 600 m. It is a reported mode of acquisition of cutaneous larva migrans infestation. The authors report a 10-year-old boy who acquired cutaneous larva migrans on his right forearm after ci…

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans is an infestation of the skin caused by nematodes. Involvement of genitals is extremely rare. We report the case of a child with this infestation on the penis who cleared rapidly with topical ivermectin.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a common skin infestation in tropical countries. The classic presentation is a serpiginous, migratory track on the feet. Local and systemic reactions, as well as secondary bacterial infections, are rarely reported. The authors report two cases of CLM with a blister and pustular response on uncommon body locations. The patients were treated with anthelmintic therapy, and a topical corticosteroid was used to relieve their severe reactions. This report aims to describe an infrequent presentation of a common disease and review treatment plans.

Cutaneous larva migrans is a frequent dermatologic problem among travelers in tropical areas, but its association with Löffler's syndrome is an extremely rare condition, particularly in children. Here, we describe a 6-year-old boy presenting cutaneous larva migrans associated with Löffler's syndrome.

Larva migrans syndrome (LMS) caused by Toxocara and Ascaris roundworms is generally believed to be more common in children, while a report from Japan suggests that it is more common in adults. We conducted a large-scale retrospective study to confirm these findings and to clarify what caused the difference between Japan and other countries, to reveal overlooked aspects of this disease. The clinical information of 911 cases which we diagnosed as Toxocara or Ascaris LMS during 2001 and 2015 was analysed. Information used included age, sex, address (city or county), chief complaint, present histo…

To determine alteration of immune responses during visceral larva migrans (VLM) caused by Toxascaris leonina at several time points, we experimentally infected mice with embryonated eggs of T. leonina and measured T-helper (Th) cell-related serial cytokine production after infection. At day 5 post infection (PI), most larvae were detected from the lungs, spleen, intestine, and muscle. Expression of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and CCL11 (eotaxin) showed a significant increase in most infected organs, except the intestine. However, expression of the CXCL1 (Gro-α) gene was most highly enh…

A 19-year-old man was transferred to hospital because of myocarditis with cardiogenic shock. Echocardiography showed a left ventricular ejection fraction of 23.8% and an intermediate amount of pericardial effusion. The patient immediately received an intra-aortic balloon pump and percutaneous cardiopulmonary support. Right ventricular endomyocardial biopsy was performed in the acute phase and showed extensive eosinophilic inflammatory cell infiltration, severe interstitial edema and moderate myocardial necrosis. High-dose corticosteroids were administered. Because the patient's antibody titer

BACKGROUND: Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) and tungiasis are commonly diagnosed in travelers returning from endemic areas, but reliable data on disease occurrence do not exist. To describe the occurrence of CLM and tungiasis in international travelers, a cross-sectional study was done.
METHOD: We conducted an airport survey in European travelers exiting northeast Brazil. Questionnaires were distributed at the departure gate of the international airport of Fortaleza (Ceará State) while passengers were waiting to board their plane. The questionnaire included questions on persona…

A 21-year-old woman admitted for a low-grade fever, dry cough, polyarthralgia, and general fatigue was found to have elevateal accustomed to eating raw meat and cattle liver peripheral blood eosinophil counts and serum IgE. Chest X-ray imaging and computed tomography (CT) showed multiple small nodules in both lung fields. A multiple dot-ELISA assay of her serum showed that she had visceral larva migrans caused by Ascaris suum or Toxocara canis. Following treatment with albendazole, she developed myelopathy and was again admitted. A cerebrospinal fluid examination showed increased eosionophils …

There are sandboxes in public elementary school playground areas in Brazil, which can be harmful to children. They are at risk of cutaneous and visceral larva migrans infection caused by Ancylostoma spp. and Toxocara spp., respectively. The study was designed to investigate contamination by Toxocara spp. and/or their eggs and Ancylostoma spp. larvae in sand samples collected from the schools' sandboxes. Five hundred and thirty-five sand samples from 28 public elementary schools were collected during summer and winter and analyzed by both Baerman's method and centrifugal flotation technique. An…

A case of asymptomatic toxocariasis in a Brazilian adopted child with hypereosinophilia is described. The diagnosis is confirmed by measuring specific IgG antibodies anti-Toxocara and, in the light of growing adoptions of children coming from low standard of living extra-European countries, the authors note the importance of investigating also on those parasitosis until today rather infrequent in our country.

Visceral Larva Migrans (Toxocara canis) is usually a relatively benign disease which is caused by infective second-stage larvae of the common cosmopolitan ascarid of dogs, characterized chiefly by sustained eosinophilia, pulmonary symptoms and hepatomegaly. Its severity varies with the number of larvae in the tissue and the immune or allergic state of the infected individual. The most important aspect of the neurotropic larvae perhaps is its potential as a facilitating agent, for instance, for Virus or Toxoplasma gondii invasion of the central nervous system by destroying the blood-brain barri…
