A case is reported in which a frontal astrocytoma occurring in a lead worker was initially misdiagnosed as lead encephalopathy. The evidence in favour of lead poisoning as a secondary diagnosis is discussed and details given of the urinary lead excretion in response to intravenous EDTA. It was concluded that though excess lead absorption had occurred, the history and findings were not such as to have made a diagnosis of lead encephalopathy tenable.

Industrial hygiene measurements were taken at five lead acid battery plants. The average of all personal samples for H2SO4 was 0.18 mg/m3 with a range of "nondetectable" to 1.7 mg/m3. Highest levels of acid were found in the charging and forming areas of the plants. Stibine and arsine were also detected in the charging and forming areas (means = 0.44 and 0.042 mg/m3, respectively). Blood lead levels have been analysed in a group of people resident in Turin in relation to different concentrations of lead in the atmosphere. Blood samples were taken in three periods of the year corresponding to seasonal maximums of pollution. Blood lead levels showed a marked decrease in the summer when the lowest concentrations are observed but the following autum sample did not show an increase. It is therefore considered likely that blood values would have been found to be increased if the final sample had been put off by 1-2 months.
