The allergic reaction due to leech bites is frequently reported due to complications of leech therapy and also unwanted leech infestation. Regularly, the urticarial papules are common, and itching lasts less than 24 h. In the case of leech biting, dermal infection could be caused by leech gut bacterial flora such as Aeromonas spp and histamine from leech saliva. In this case report, a 30-year-old diabetic woman, who works in the field of leech breeding, was bitten by Hirudo orientalis during breeding. Her clinical signs were inflammation, swelling, pain, and redness in the back of her left han

Widespread mouth ulcerations were observed in largemouth bass collected from eight inland lakes in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan during the summer months of 2002 and 2003. These ulcerations were associated with, and most likely caused by, leech parasitism. Through the use of morphological dichotomous keys, it was determined that all leeches collected are of one species: Myzobdella lugubris. Among the eight lakes examined, Lake Orion and Devils Lake had the highest prevalence of leech parasitism (34% and 29%, respectively) and mouth ulcerations (53% and 68%, respectively). Statistical analyse…

Leech infestation could be associated with wide range of complications including epistaxis, stridor, hemoptysis, globus sensation, hematemesis, and vaginal bleeding. In the present case report. , we introduce a case of leech infestation in a 41-year-old female presenting with chronic globus sensation, stridor, vomiting and dysphagia later diagnosed with leech infestation. Therefore, leech bites might be considered as a differential. Diagnosis of globus sensation in the endemic rural areas where in unhealthy water from natural sources is consumed without taking required hygienic precautions.

As the most common ectoparasites on mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari Lönnberg 1905), which has great economic and ecological importance in the Southern Ocean, parasitic copepods and leeches can significantly affect fish health and survival and thus influence the sustainable use of this commercial fishery resource. Accurate identification of these parasites is essential for understanding their specific impacts on hosts and ecosystems, as well as for developing effective fisheries management. This study investigated 34 ectoparasites from 28 C. gunnari specimens at South Georgia in Augus…

Leeches are carnivorous, hermaphroditic, segmented worms mainly found in fresh water. The majority of leech attachments are external and short-lasting. Internal surfaces can be involved. Yet, esophageal attachment is very rare. We report a case of a 59-year-old female who presented with hematemesis, melena and chest pain. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a round black foreign body in the mid-third of the esophagus identified as a leech. We carefully extracted the worm with a forceps applied to the middle of its body. The diagnosis of leech infestation should be kept in mind when explo…

A 55-year-old Chinese woman presented with a 3-week history of unilateral left-sided epistaxis and nasal obstruction. She had swam in a freshwater stream 1 month prior to the onset of symptoms. Endoscopic examination revealed a live leech at the left middle meatus with a large part of its body inside the left maxillary antrum. Local anaesthetic was applied to anaesthetise the leech and facilitate removal. Magnetic resonance imaging performed following removal confirmed that no other leeches were present in the sinonasal area. The endoparasitism might have persisted because of the inconspicuous…

BACKGROUND: This is a case report about a rare hypopharyngeal foreign body causing dysphagia, dyspnea, and hemoptysis as well as melena: an ingested leech. The patient was in this condition for more than 1 week.
METHODS: The ingested leech, attached to the right piriform fossa partially obstructing the larynx, had to be removed under general anesthesia.
RESULTS: After removal, no further symptoms occurred. The leech was identified as the species Theromyzon tessulatum.
CONCLUSIONS: Human infestation of a leech in the upper aerodigestive tract is a very rare condition in urban areas. The curr

Medical leeches are widely been used in biochemical and clinical medical studies, helping to restore blood circulation to grafted or severely injured tissue. Mostly, adult leeches are being used in the traditional pharmacopeia, but the gene expression profiling of leeches in different growth periods is not well-reported. So, in this study, we used transcriptome analysis to analyze the comparative gene expression patterns of Hirudinaria manillensis (H. manillensis) in different growth periods, including larval, young, and adult stages. We constructed 24 cDNA libraries from H. manillensis larval…

Medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis, Hirudo verbana) have been used in the field of medicine to treat various diseases for thousands of years. Popularity of their use changed over time and in Europe, it peaked at the beginning of the 19th century. In modern medicine, application of leeches on flaps with venous congestion was first used and described by Deganc and Zdravic in 1960. A certain renaissance of leech use is currently taking place, especially in the field of reconstructive surgery. In general, use of leeches is indicated during critical post-operative period, in which the microcircu…

This case report describes ocular and nasal leech infestation (hirudiniasis) in a dog. The patient presented for a suspected ocular foreign body. The patient was sedated to allow proper examination, which revealed a leech foreign body attached to the bulbar conjunctiva adjacent to the inferotemporal limbus of the left eye. A 3.5% hypertonic saline solution was applied topically to the eye in four sequential drops, until the leech detached itself and was removed with a cotton bud. The affected eye was found to have a small corneal ulcer, a small area of scleral haemorrhage, and prominent lympho

Bleeding as the result of a leech in the male urethra is very rare. We describe a 13-year-old boy who had a leech in his urethra. In the emergency department he persistently squeezed his penis in an attempt to prevent the leech from going deeper into his urethra. Manual removal by forcep failed and cystoscopic removal was recommended. Penile block with lidocaine 1% relieved the pain and enabled him to squeeze his penis harder until the leech was pushed out making forcep removal easier. Post-removal he had hematuria and penile pain for 2 days. A description of his presentation and management, a

The inventory of coot (Fulico atra) ectoparasites during wintering season (October 2004-March 2005) has been carried out from 17 individuals captured in lake Tonga. Results show that mites are the most abundant parasites (65.6%), followed by lice (Pseudomenopon pilosum, Rallicolo fulicae, Fullicofulo lurida, Incidifrons fulicae, Laemobothrion atrum) 34.4% and leeches (Theromyzone sp) with 0.05%. All individuals were infested with lice, 82.4% with mites and 41.2% with leeches.

Hirudin is a potent anticoagulant found in the salivary glands of several species of leeches. We report a case of direct hirudin exposure after suspected leech bite causing significant penile ecchymosis. Diagnosis was not apparent on initial evaluation but made after a thorough history was obtained and the leech was found in the lining of his swim trunks, which he left at home. Although this presentation mimics several other potentially serious conditions, treatment is largely observational with anticipated rapid improvement over the course of hours without intervention.

The leech that is taken by ingestion of contaminated water can settle on any location at upper respiratory tract from nose to larynx. It sucks blood by adhering to the mucosa and causes mucosal bleeding by secreting hirudin. If the leech goes forward to the larynx, this can be life threatening due to severe airway obstruction. We are presenting 23 year-old male patient who admitted to our hospital with anterior and posterior nose bleeding and dysphagia due to the leech located in the posterior wall of the nasopharynx. The treatment and differential diagnosis of epistaxis is discussed in this a

OBJECTIVES: We determined whether glycerin enemas were appropriately prescribed in pediatric fecal impaction patients using the Leech score and identified factors that influenced the prescription of glycerin enemas in the pediatric emergency department (PED).
METHODS: We included patients who received a glycerin enema at the PED of a tertiary teaching hospital. We divided the study subjects into two groups on the basis of their Leech scores: an appropriate enema group (Leech score ≥ 8), and an inappropriate enema group (Leech score < 8). Logistic regression was performed to determine the fact

Successful single-vessel arteriovenous replantation of a completely amputated human ear is described. This result was followed by an experimental study using a rabbit model, to confirm that an amputated ear could survive replantation with only a single arteriovenous anastomosis. Fifteen animals were placed in one of two experimental groups: Group 1-arteriovenous replantation, no treatment (n = 6); and Group 2-arteriovenous replantation with medicinal leeching (n = 9). All ears demonstrated initial reperfusion of the replantation immediately following microanastomosis. Laser Doppler flow readin

Haemogregarina crocodilinorum Börner 1901 is redescribed from the blood of the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). Gametocytes occurred in erythrocytes and erythrocytic schizonts contained about eight merozoites (range, 6--12). Gametogony and sporogony occurred in the gut of the leech, Placobdella multilineata and intracellular, unisporocystic oocysts were found within epithelial cells of the leech's intestinal wall. Presumed sporozoites were present in the intestinal contents. Attempts to transmit the parasite via leeches failed. The haemogregarine was widely distributed in south…

BACKGROUND: Wound infections are a common complication of trauma or pathological disorders, posing significant treatment challenges. Historical medical texts describe around 60 procedures to facilitate wound healing, ensure proper tissue approximation, and achieve scar-free recovery. Among these, techniques involving bloodletting have proven particularly effective. One such method, leech therapy, is a biological debridement technique that supports wound cleaning and healing through controlled bloodletting. This minimally invasive and cost-effective therapy improves circulation, reduces local s

Leech therapy, which can lead to complications such as anemia and bleeding, has been used to treat many diseases since ancient times. Furthermore, some substances in leech saliva are known to have anticoagulant effects. Acute mesenteric ischemia, which develops due to mesenteric vascular obstruction, can be treated medically or surgically. Non-occlusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI) occurs as a result of decreased blood flow in mesenteric vessels due to hypovolemia, hypotension, etc. In this report, we mentioned a 57-year-old male patient who was admitted to the emergency department with syncope
