[Injuries in snowboarding--a prospective study].

180 patients with injuries effected through snowboarding were evaluated during a period of 2 1/2 months in both the hospitals and private surgeries of Oberwallis. This was done to determine the nature of the injuries and the risk factors that led to them. Snowboarders are on the average 21 years of age and only rarely over 40. One-third are women, and two-third are men. More than half are beginners with less than one week's training experience; one-fifth of the beginners met with the accident on the first "snowboard day". Over 80% of the injured said that riding mistakes and insufficient train

Pelvis and lower extremity fractures related to 4-wheeled off-road vehicles: trends from the national electronic injury surveillance system database.

OBJECTIVE: This paper characterizes recent trends in pelvis and lower extremity orthopaedic injuries treated in US emergency departments from 2012 to 2021 associated with four-wheeled off-road vehicles (ORVs). METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database was queried for ORV-related lower trunk and lower extremity injuries from 2012 to 2021. Injury totals and trends were analyzed descriptively, with a weighted analysis generalizing results to the US population. RESULTS: A total of 1795 cases were analyzed, representing 71,506 lower extremity and pelvis injuries from 20

Injuries associated with a fractured shaft of the femur.

A knowledge of injury patterns, both from the mechanism of injury and from their associations, allows specific injuries to be suspected and actively excluded. We have reviewed fractures of the femoral shaft to highlight the patterns of their associated high morbidity and mortality. Our survey shows that accidents involving motorcyclists, pedestrians and motor cars have the highest incidence of associated injury. Common associations include chest, head, pelvis and ipsilateral leg injuries in pedestrians, and pelvic and ipsilateral leg injuries in motorcyclists. Rarer associations with femoral s…

Minor injuries as a risk factor for venous thrombosis.

BACKGROUND: Injuries increase the risk of venous thrombosis. So far, most research has focused on major injuries that are accompanied by other risk factors for venous thrombosis, such as plaster casts and surgery. We studied the association of venous thrombosis with common minor injuries, such as minor sural muscle ruptures and ankle sprains. METHODS: We performed a large, population-based, case-control study (the Multiple Environmental and Genetic Assessment of risk factors for venous thrombosis [MEGA] study), including consecutive patients with a first deep venous thrombosis of the leg or p

Dynamic wound closure for decompressive leg fasciotomy wounds.

Decompressive fasciotomy for preservation of lower extremity function and salvage is an essential technique in trauma. The wounds that result from the standard two incision four-compartment leg fasciotomy are often accompanied by a wide soft tissue opening that in the face of true compartment syndrome are often impossible to close in a delayed primary fashion. We describe a technique using a device that allows for dissipation of the workload across the wound margin allowing for successful delayed primary closure. Consecutive patients who presented to the 28th Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad

The effect of arm swings on lower limb kinetics during single-leg forward, vertical, and backward hopping.

Single-leg forward hopping was commonly used to evaluate knee function and quadricep strength deficits following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Achieving similar hopping performance between legs was insufficient to support symmetrical knee function and quadricep strength in patients following ACL injuries, likely due to movement compensation. This study aimed to quantify the effects of arm swings on lower limb kinetics during single-leg forward, vertical, and backward hopping with a focus on knee assessment. Thirty-eight injury-free participants performed single-leg forward, vertic

Characterization of lower-extremity biomechanics when walking with a hands-free crutch: an integrated experimental and computational analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lower-leg wounds and fractures are some of the most common types of traumatic injuries sustained by U.S. Service members during combat operations. Existing guidelines for on-field management of lower-leg injuries recommend stabilizing the injury and preventing weight-bearing on the affected leg. However, adhering to these recommendations could be challenging because the casualty may need to walk independently to obtain medical care. In this exploratory experimental and computational study, we assessed the biomechanical characteristics of a hands-free crutch device to aid in the mob…

The benefit of a single-leg strength training program for the muscles around the untrained ankle.

Severe ankle injuries can require extended periods of immobilization that adversely affect the strength of the ankle muscles. We have investigated a single-leg strength training program of the muscles surrounding the ankle to determine if it produces a crossover benefit for the contralateral ankle muscles. Twenty subjects without any history of ankle injuries were randomly divided into a control and a training group. Both groups underwent isokinetic testing of the ankle muscles at the beginning and end of an 8-week period. The control group maintained normal activities between the tests. Half

Epidemiology and Characteristics of Ankle and Foot Injuries in Electric Scooter-Related Accidents.

BACKGROUND: The use of electric scooters (e-scooters) continues to increase as a simple, inexpensive means of transport, resulting in a sharp increase in the incidence of scooter-related accidents. No study to date has closely examined the injury extent to the lower leg, joints, and extremities from e-scooter-related accidents. Here, we investigated the epidemiology and injury patterns of such accidents, focusing on injuries to the ankle and foot. METHODS: Based on data from a single tertiary hospital's database, the demographics of 563 patients with scooter-associated injuries were analyzed

The "Heel Hook"-A Climbing-Specific Technique to Injure the Leg.

Acute injuries in rock climbing either come from a fall onto the lower leg or from performing a hard move and injuring the upper extremity. Further evaluations of lower leg injuries in rock climbing athletes have been performed recently finding sport characteristics such as peroneal tendon dislocations or chronic deformations of the feet. One injury mechanism described in case reports is the so-called heel hook position, which is used more frequently today compared with the beginngs of rock climbing. In addition, the number of these injuries is expected to rise with the increase in popularity …

Injury frequency and characteristics (location, type, cause and severity) differed significantly among athletics ('track and field') disciplines during 14 international championships (2007-2018): implications for medical service planning.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse differences between athletic disciplines in the frequency and characteristics of injuries during international athletics championships. METHODS: Study design, injury definition and data collection procedures were similar during the 14 international championships (2007-2018). National medical teams and local organising committee physicians reported all newly incurred injuries daily on a standardised injury report form. Results were presented as number of injuries and number of injuries per 1000 registered athletes, separately for male and female athletes, and for each dis

[Heterotopic replantation after bilateral lower leg amputation].

INTRODUCTION: Replantation is an established procedure in reconstructive surgery. In a bilateral lower leg amputation attempts should be made to rescue at least one extremity, if the patients' vital conditions are stable. PATIENT AND METHOD: We report on a patient who has suffered a bilateral lower leg amputation. Due to the complex injuries the left leg was heterotopically (cross-over) replanted to the right leg. At the left leg an above knee stump was created. In a second operation a soft tissue defect at the replanted extremity was covered by a free microvascular latissimus dorsi muscle fl
