Efficacy and safety of a dimethicone lotion in patients with pyrethroid-resistant head lice in an epidemic area, Okinawa, Japan.

Pyrethroid insecticides are the only pesticides approved for the treatment of head lice (pediculosis capitis) infestations in Japan. However, in Okinawa Prefecture, 96% of head lice are resistant to pyrethroids. Here, we conducted a clinical trial to assess the safety and efficacy of a dimethicone preparation against head lice infestations in Okinawa Prefecture. Dimethicone-containing lotion was applied over the entire scalp three times over a 7-day period. Lice bodies (nymphs/adults) and eggs (nits) were counted before (day 0) and after treatment (day 8); a subset of eggs was collected to est…

International recommendations for an effective control of head louse infestations.

Head louse infestations continue to be a concern of public health in most countries, including the most developed ones. The present recommendations are intended to inform and stress the role and impact of the different authorities, institutions, industry, and the public in the control of head lice in order to reduce the prevalence of this parasite. We encourage health authorities to pursue more effective methods to correctly identify such infestations, and evaluate existing and new pediculicides, medical devices, louse repellents, and louse- and nit-removal remedies. Pediculicides and medical

Effect of a health education program on reduction of pediculosis in school girls at Amphoe Muang, Khon Kaen Province, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Pediculosis caused by head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) infestation is still an important health problem in schoolchildren, especially girls, worldwide, including in Thailand. Although pediculicidal agents effectively kill head lice, the re-infestation rate is still high. Thus, prevention is an important strategy for any sustainable control program. We aimed to develop and evaluate the efficacy of a health education program for increasing knowledge, changing attitudes and promoting preventive practices to reduce prevalence of pediculosis among school girls in Amphoe Muang, Khon

High mitochondrial gene diversity of Pediculus humanus capitis among children in northern Iran.

BACKGROUND: The head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, is an obligate ectoparasite and its infestation remains a major public health issue worldwide. Determining the genetic characteristics of the existing clades is essential to identify the population structure and to develop head lice-control programs. Hence, we aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of head lice among infested individuals in northern Iran. METHODS: Adult head lice were collected from 100 infested individuals referring to the health centers throughout five geographical regions in Mazandaran Province, Iran. Partial fragm

The drivers of sea lice management policies and how best to integrate them into a risk management strategy: An ecosystem approach to sea lice management.

The control of sea lice infestations on cultivated Atlantic salmon is a major issue in many regions of the world. The numerous drivers which shape the priorities and objectives of the control strategies vary for different regions/jurisdictions. These range from the animal welfare and economic priorities of the producers, to the mitigation of any potential impacts on wild stocks. Veterinary ethics, environmental impacts of therapeutants, and impacts for organic certification of the produce are, amongst others, additional sets of factors which should be considered. Current best practice in both …

The prevalence of Pediculus humanus capitis in two primary schools of Hacılar, Kayseri.

OBJECTIVE: Pediculosis capitis is a worldwide public health concern, and today, head lice are seen in all socio-economic levels. The infestation usually occurs by head-to-head contact and children, primarily girls, aged 3-12 years are mostly affected. In the present study a total of 405 pupils (214 boys and 191 girls) from two pre- and primary schools in the Kayseri-Hacılar region were examined for pediculosis capitis during March 2010. METHODS: Lice and/or eggs were detected by visual examination of the children's hair. RESULTS: Out of 405 children, 44 (10.9%) were infested with head lice.

Prehistorical Pediculus humanus capitis infestation: quantitative data and low vacuum scanning microscopy.

A pre-Columbian Peruvian scalp was examined decades ago by a researcher from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. Professor Olympio da Fonseca Filho described nits and adult lice attached to hair shafts and commented about the origin of head lice infestations on mankind. This same scalp was sent to our laboratory and is the subject of the present paper. Analysis showed a massive infestation with nine eggs/cm2 and an impressive number of very well preserved adult lice. The infestation age was roughly estimated as nine months before death based on the distance of nits from the hair root and the medium r…

Prevalence of Pediculus humanus capitis infestation among kindergarten children in Bahía Blanca city, Argentina.

The human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Anoplura: Pediculidae), is a worldwide public health concern. This human obligate ectoparasite usually infests school age children. The aim of this work was to investigate the prevalence of head lice in kindergarten children from Bahia Blanca. In addition, the influence of risk factors for pediculosis infestation, such as gender, hair characteristics, and socioeconomic class, was studied in relation to the prevalence of this ectoparasite. From a total of 220 pupils examined (125 girls and 95 boys), 94 showed pediculosis. The overall prev

Pediculosis corporis: an ancient itch.

Lice are obligatory parasites surviving on blood meals obtained from the host, with their mouthparts modified to enable piercing and sucking. The infestation with body lice, also known as pediculosis corporis, is a common worldwide problem that affects people of all races. Body lice are preferentially seen in cold climates, under conditions of poor sanitation and crowding. Pediculosis corporis is not only a disease in itself, but it can also be a source of bacterial infections. The hallmark of pediculosis corporis is pruritus and pyoderma of clothing covered areas. A more general reaction of f

Prevalence of sucking and chewing lice on cattle entering feedlots in southern Alberta.

Beef calves from 2 sources entering southern Alberta feedlots in the winters of 1997-98 and 1998-99, were surveyed for the presence of lice. A random sample of multiple source (MS), that is, auction market-derived, calves entering commercial feedlots and single source (SS) calves entering a backgrounding feedlot were examined for the presence of lice at entry to the feedlot. A standardized examination, which involved hair-part examination of 8 louse predilection sites, was conducted on each selected calf to determine prevalence and intensity of infestation. The long-nosed sucking louse, Linogn

Demographic and Clinical Characteristics of Pediculosis-associated Severe Anemia in the Emergency Department.

INTRODUCTION: Infestation with Pediculus species, or common lice, is frequently diagnosed in the emergency department (ED). Because lice ingest human blood, prolonged and heavy infestation can plausibly lead to iron deficiency anemia. Severe anemia attributable to lice infestation has infrequently been reported to date. Our objective in this study was to retrospectively review cases of lice-related anemia at a single public hospital to identify risk factors and associated demographic and clinical features of this disease process. METHODS: We screened the medical records for patients presentin

Quantitative risk assessment of salmon louse-induced mortality of seaward-migrating post-smolt Atlantic salmon.

The Norwegian government recently implemented a new management system to regulate salmon farming in Norway, aiming to promote environmentally sustainable growth in the aquaculture industry. The Norwegian coast has been divided into 13 production zones and the volume of salmonid production in the zones will be regulated based on salmon lice effects on wild salmonids. Here we present a model for assessing salmon louse-induced mortality of seaward-migrating post-smolts of Atlantic salmon. The model quantifies expected salmon lice infestations and louse-induced mortality of migrating post-smolt sa…

Inclusion of photoautotrophic cultivated diatom biomass in salmon feed can deter lice.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of diatom (microalgae) biomass as a lice-reducing ingredient in salmon feed. The original hypothesis was based on the fact that polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs), e.g. 2-trans, 4-trans decadenial (A3) produced by diatoms can function as grazing deterrents and harm copepod development. Salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) is a copepod, and we intended to test if inclusion of diatom biomass in the feed could reduce the infestation of lice on salmon. We performed experiments where salmon kept in tanks were offered four different diets, i.e. basi

Advancements in the treatment of head lice in pediatrics.

Head lice infestations occur commonly each year in children of all socioeconomic statuses. However, head lice have become more of a nuisance as resistance to first-line agents, such as permethrin 1% and pyrethrins, has increased. Newer topical products provide unique mechanisms of action without current signs of resistance. As with older agents, proper application of products must be emphasized to ensure that treatment is effective. In addition, nonpharmacologic measures should be taken to avoid reinfestation in the patient and to prevent the spread of lice to close personal contacts.

Molecular detection of hemotropic Mycoplasma and Bartonella species in lice from sheep and goats of Mexico.

The knowledge of lice associated with small ruminants, especially sheep and goats, is scarce. In Mexico, there are historical reports of six species of chewing and sucking lice associated with Capra hircus and Ovis canadensis. However, the reports did not analyze the ecology of the infestations or the presence of potentially pathogenic bacteria. For this reason, the objectives of this study were i) to identify the species of lice associated with sheep and goats in three states of the Mexican Republic, ii) to characterize the infestations, and iii) to identify the presence of bacterial pathogen

[Back again: the clothes louse (Pediculus humanus var. corporis)].

In two homeless men aged 38 and 32 years, who suffered from itching, infestation with body lice (Pediculus humanus var. corporis, a.k.a. clothes lice) was diagnosed. This infestation is rare in the Netherlands. In 1993 and 1994 and infection with body lice was registered 41 times in 31 patients at the clinic for homeless of the Community Health Service of Utrecht. The body louse can be seen by the naked eye. Treatment is by hygienic measures, pediculicides if necessary, and by prevention. Important to recognize is that P. humanus can be the vector of trench fever (Bartonella quintana), relapsi

Community structure of lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) from two sympatric gull species: kelp gull (Larus dominicanus) and Franklin's gull (Larus pipixcan) in Talcahuano, Chile.

A total of 1,177 lice of four species were collected from 124 kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) and 137 lice of the same four species from 60 Franklin's gulls (Larus pipixcan). The louse Saemundssonia lari (O Fabricius) (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) was the most numerous on both gull species, with infestation rates of 4.9 on kelp gulls and 1.8 on Franklin's gulls. The second most abundant louse was Quadraceps punctatus (Burmeister), with a high infestation rate but low prevalence on kelp gulls; those parameters were much lower among lice from Franklin's gulls. The composition and community struct

Effective treatments for head lice.

Head lice is a parasitic infestation common in children. Proper management is essential to treat lice in a safe, convenient, cost-effective, and efficacious manner. School lice policies are often antiquated and can stigmatize the child and family. Evidence-based care guidelines may significantly help families minimize the stress of lice.
