Lichen sclerosus (LS) was first described in women by a researcher in 1887.1 It was recognized in men by another investigator in 1928.2 Lichen sclerosus is a chronic, inflammatory lymphocytic dermatosis that occurs in anywhere from 1:30 to 1:1,000 adults.3,4 There is a slight predominance of women, with a bimodal age distribution in pre-pubertal individuals and again in life's sixth-seventh decades. Studies have established that the majority with pre-pubertal onset continue to have adulthood disease.5 Psychosocial implications of this disease, specifically self-image, anxiety, and sexual funct

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Dysphagia is one of the most common reasons for patients' visits to a gastroenterologist. Esophageal lichen planus (ELP) has historically been felt to be a rare disease, when in fact it is often misdiagnosed and unrecognized. Often first diagnosed as an unusual esophagitis, all gastroenterologists will see ELP in their practice, and need to be able to recognize this condition.
RECENT FINDINGS: Although there is still a relative paucity of data on this condition, this article will update the typical presenting symptoms, endoscopic findings, and ways to differentiate ELP from

Lichen sclerosus of the vulva (LSV) is seen frequently enough to warrant knowing how to diagnose it and institute appropriate treatment strategies. LSV is a chronic skin disorder, very likely of autoimmune origin, which may affect various areas of the perineum, although some women may be affected in extragenital areas. The disease has significant adverse impact on quality of life and sexual activity and may undergo malignant transformation. History of symptomatology and clinical examination is sufficient to make the diagnosis. Skin biopsy is only necessary in specific scenarios. Topical cortic

Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin. It mainly affects the anogenital area. More knowledge of the disease is needed to avoid delay in diagnosis as early treatment may cure the disease in some and reduce or prevent scarring. Initial treatment for girls and boys comprises the daily application of a potent cortisone ointment for 3 months. After remission the treatment should be continued long-term intermittently. If there is no complete remission in boys complete circumcision is recommended. LS usually cannot be healed but only well suppressed, and also after circu

Lichen planus is an inflammatory mucocutaneous condition with a myriad of clinical manifestations. There are 3 forms of lichen planus that effect the vulva: papulosquamous, hypertrophic, and erosive. Erosive lichen planus can progress to vulvar scaring, vaginal stenosis, and squamous cell carcinoma; these long-term sequelae cause sexual distress, depression, and decreased quality of life for patients. Diagnosis is often delayed because of patient embarrassment or clinician misdiagnosis. Early recognition and treatment is essential to decreasing the morbidity of this condition. Multimodal treat

Lichen planus (LP) and lichen sclerosus (LS) are cutaneous-mucous diseases with uncertain epidemiology. Current data, which are likely to be underestimated, suggest a prevalence in the general population of 0.1-4% for cutaneous LP, 1.27-2.0% for oral LP, and 0.1-3.3% for LS. While etiology of lichen is still unknown, clinical and histological evidence show an (auto)immune pathogenesis. Association of lichen with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) has been investigated in few studies. This association appears better defined in the case of LS, while is more controversial for LP. In both situation

Lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) is a type oflichenoid dermatitis with superficial dermalmelanophages that presents as symmetrical, hyperpigmented macules and patches that aredistributed over the forehead, temples, cheeks, andneck. Lichen planus (LP) is a relatively common autoimmune T-cell-mediated disease of unknown aetiology affecting the mucous membranes, skin and nails. Its prevalence varies between 0.5 and 2.2% of the population in epidemiological studies with a peak incidence in the 30-60 years range and with a female predominance of 2:1. Mucosal lichen planus tends to follow a chronic course with acute exacerbations. Spontaneous remission of oral lichen planus (OLP) is uncommon, and indeed mucosal LP may become worse with time. In contrast, cutaneous lichen planus may follow a milder clinical course though some v

Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the skin, mucous membranes, nails and scalp. Esophageal lichen planus is a rarely reported manifestation of lichen planus, presenting itself commonly in middle-aged women, with symptoms such as dysphagia. We report a case of esophageal lichen planus in a 54-year-old woman associated with oral, cutaneous and ungual lichen planus. Although lichen planus is a disorder well known by dermatologists, reports of esophageal lichen planus are rare in dermatologic literature. The esophageal lichen planus is little known and underdiagnosed, wit
