The Role of Psychological Stress in Atrial Fibrillation: Completing the Translational Circle from Molecular Mechanisms to Citizen Science.

Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common cardiac arrhythmia, affects over 33 million people worldwide and is associated with increased risks of stroke, heart failure, reduced quality of life, and mortality. In addition to established cardiovascular risk factors, accumulating evidence suggests that psychological stress and stress-related physiological changes may influence AF onset, progression, and recurrence. However, stress remains an underexplored target in preventive cardiology. This review summarizes current evidence on the relationship between psychological stress and AF, examining perc

Clinical insight meets scientific innovation to develop a next generation ERT for Pompe disease.

Years of research into the structure, processing, and function of acid alpha-glucosidase led to the development and 2006 approval of alglucosidase alfa (recombinant human acid alpha-glucosidase, Myozyme®/Lumizyme®), an enzyme replacement therapy and the first approved treatment for Pompe disease. Alglucosidase alfa has been a lifesaving treatment for patients with infantile-onset Pompe disease and radically improved daily life for patients with late-onset Pompe disease; however, long-term experience with alglucosidase alfa unraveled key unmet needs in these populations. Despite treatment, Pomp

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or intersexed content for nursing curricula.

There has been limited identification of core lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or intersexed (LGBTI) experience concepts that should be included in the nursing curricula. This article addresses the gap in the literature. To move nursing toward the goals of health equity and cultural humility in practice, education, and research, nursing curricula must integrate core LGBTI concepts, experiences, and needs related to health and illness. This article reviews LGBTI health care literature to address the attitudes, knowledge, and skills needed to address curricular gaps and provide content sug

Perinatal and Early-Life Exposures and Risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Background: Perinatal and early-life factors may influence non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) risk, but study results have been mixed and exposure data for childhood ages are limited. Herein, we investigated associations of these exposures with risk of NHL and common subtypes. Methods: This case-control study included 2280 NHL cases and 2253 controls, enrolled from 2002 to 2014 at the Mayo Clinic Rochester. Self-reported perinatal and early-life exposures included maternal age at birth, birth order, birthweight, time breastfed, height and weight at ages 7, 12, and 18 years relative to peers, and age a

Race/color functional limitation disparities in a "racial democracy": findings among middle-aged and older adults in Brazil.

OBJECTIVES: Brazil is rapidly aging and expected to have increased rates of functional limitation. While some literature has analyzed race/color functional limitation disparities, no documented research has examined such disparities between age groups that lived through Brazil's different political regimes. Guided by a life course perspective, we examine this research gap. METHODS: We used wave 1 (2015-2016) data (n = 8,980) from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study on Aging to examine race/color disparities in difficulty with mobility, episodic memory, near vision, and hearing. We computed age g…

Experience of childhood abuse and later number of remaining teeth in older Japanese: a life-course study from Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study project.

OBJECTIVES: From a life-course perspective, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) such as childhood abuse are known risk factors for adult diseases and death throughout life. ACEs could also cause poor dental health in later life because they could induce poor dental health in childhood, initiate unhealthy behaviors, and lower immune and physiological functions. However, it is not known whether ACEs have a longitudinal adverse effect on dental health in older age. This study aimed to investigate the association between experience of childhood abuse until the age of 18 and current number of rema

Experiences of Dermatologists and Patients Regarding Psoriasis and Its Connection to Psoriatic Arthritis in Saudi Arabia.

PURPOSE: Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory, immune-mediated skin disease that has significant impact on a patient's quality of life, yet it remains challenging for dermatologists to successfully identify and manage. Without effective screening, diagnosis and treatments, psoriasis can potentially progress to psoriatic arthritis. A descriptive, observational cross-sectional study of Saudi Arabian dermatologists and patients with psoriasis was conducted to explore dermatologist and patient perspectives of psoriasis, including diagnosis, management, disease course and unmet needs. PATIENTS AND

[Heat stroke: a critical care perspective].

Heat stroke is a life-threatening clinical syndrome caused by an imbalance between heat production and heat dissipation resulting from exposure to a hot environment and (or) strenuous physical activity. It is characterized by a core body temperature>40 centigrade and central nervous system abnormalities (such as altered mental status, seizures, or coma), accompanied by multiple organ injury. Against the backdrop of global warming and the marked increase in extreme heat events, the incidence of heat-related illnesses has risen significantly. As the most severe form of heat-related illness, heat

Management of Ascites in Patients with Cirrhosis: An Update.

Ascites represents a critical event in the natural history of liver cirrhosis. From a prognostic perspective, its occurrence marks the transition from the compensated to the decompensated stage of the disease, leading to an abrupt worsening of patients' life expectancy. Moreover, ascites heralds a turbulent clinical course, characterized by acute events and further complications, frequent hospitalizations, and eventually death. The pathophysiology of ascites classically relies on hemodynamic mechanisms, with effective hypovolemia as the pivotal event. Recent discoveries, however, integrated th

A New Tool to Assess Quality of Life in Patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis or Non-specific Interstitial Pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) is significantly impaired in patients with pulmonary fibrosis, however reliable tools to assess QoL issues specific for this group of patients are still missing. We thus aimed to develop a new questionnaire called "Quality of life in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis" (QPF) to measure QoL in patients with fibrotic idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIP). METHODS: An item pool was created on the basis of a German expert group with support of patients suffering from pulmonary fibrosis. In a 1st step, this version of the questionnaire was completed by

Post-Traumatic Growth in a Canadian Perinatal Population During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Examination.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic growth (PTG) has been examined in the context of COVID-19-related stress; however, there has been less consideration for PTG in more vulnerable groups, such as pregnant and postpartum women. This study aimed to qualitatively explore PTG (through silver lining experiences) in a perinatal population and to understand how these experiences evolved over the course of the pandemic. METHODS: Data came from COVID-19 Survey Canada, which was administered online at three time points across 12-months: May 2020, November 2020, and May 2021 (N = 1074). At baseline, 61 perinat

Holistic medicine IV: principles of existential holistic group therapy and the holistic process of healing in a group setting.

In existential holistic group therapy, the whole person heals in accordance with the holistic process theory and the life mission theory. Existential group psychotherapy addresses the emotional aspect of the human mind related to death, freedom, isolation, and meaninglessness, while existential holistic group therapy addresses the state of the person"s wholeness. This includes the body, the person's philosophy of life, and often also love, purpose of life, and the spiritual dimension, to the same extent as it addresses the emotional psyche and sexuality, and it is thus much broader than tradit

Racial composition in K-12 schooling and cognitive health of older Black adults.

BackgroundIn the U.S., historical legal and contemporary social segregation results in K-12 school differences based on racial composition. We hypothesize that racial composition of K-12 schools contributes to higher Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementia risk among non-Hispanic Black (NHB) older adults.ObjectiveTo better understand the social determinants of AD, this original research study adopts a life course perspective. Specifically, we investigate associations between K-12 schools' racial composition and later-life cognitive health among U.S.-born and educated NHB older adults.Met…
