Moisturizers are used daily by many people to alleviate symptoms of dry skin. All of them contain lipids. It has been suggested that topically applied lipids may interfere with the structure and function of the permeability barrier. BACKGROUND: Human mammary tissue metabolizes lipids from plasma, a process affected by female gonadal hormones. Both benign and malignant proliferation of breast tissue in women have been associated with changes in plasma lipid and lipoprotein levels.
METHODS: One hundred consecutive women with breast masses (50 malignant, 50 benign) had diagnostic biopsies followed by axillary node dissection in those with cancer. Fasting serum samples were taken just prior to biopsy and analyzed for lipid fatty acid and lipoprotein levels. Malignant breast tissue was analyzed for hormone receptor binding.

Lipid peroxidation of brain lipids as determined by the conjugated diene method was observed in mice following administration of sublethal doses of potassium cyanide (KCN). To establish the possible involvement of acidic lipids in 5-HT receptor mechanisms, we subjected whole rat brain synaptic plasma membranes to treatment with several kinds of lipid-modifying reagents and examined the [3H]5-HT and [3H]spiperone binding properties of the membranes. A simple method for extracting and purifying lipids from rat liver in a single step using nontoxic solvents is described. The method consists homogenizing the pulverized tissue with a mixture of trichlorotrifluoroethane (Cl2CF-CCIF2) and isopropyl alcohol (1 : 1, v/v). Just enough water is added to the lipid extract to produce a biphasic system.
