[Two cases of giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma].

The first patient was of a 71-year-old woman who was examined for abdominal protuberance. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonanc e imaging(MRI)revealed a giant tumor almost occupying the entire abdomen. En-bloc resection was performed. The tumor was 30 cm in size and weighed 6,500 g. The histological diagnosis was a well-differentiated liposarcoma. The second patient was a 72-year-old woman who visited our hospital after she had been diagnosed with an abdominal tumor by her family doctor. CT and MRI revealed a massive tumor involving various components. The tumor had invaded the left u

Aggressive angiomyxoma of childhood: two unusual cases developed in the scrotum.

Aggressive angiomyxoma (AAM) is a locally invasive soft tissue tumor and is predominantly found in the female pelvis and perineum. The incidence of AAM in adult and adolescent males is low, and is very rare in male children. However, two cases of AAM occurred in the scrotum of 8-year-old and 1-year-old boys. Grossly, both tumors were ill-delineated nodules showing myxoid homogenous and lobulated cut surface. The scrotum of case 2 was replaced by the exuberant mass, making a polypoid appearance. On microscopic examination, both had hypocellular myxoid stroma, spindle and stellate stromal cells,

Locally recurring primary myxoma of the breast: an evidence of malignant alteration.

Breast is an extremely rare localization of myxoma. To date, only five cases have been reported, including one case of nerve sheath myxoma. In this report, the authors present a 37-year-old female patient who was admitted to the University Hospital for Tumors in Zagreb, Croatia, in 1979, with a 2-month history of gradually enlarging, painless subcutaneous mass in her right breast. On physical examination, a firm, relatively well circumscribed mass measuring 3 x 2 cm was detected in the upper outer quadrant and partly beneath the areola. The mass was freely movable to the overlying skin, causin

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma with inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor-like features.

The dedifferentiated component of dedifferentiated liposarcoma shows wide histologic variation including tumors with heterologous differentiation. Myofibroblastic differentiation has been recognized in dedifferentiated liposarcoma. However, tumors closely resembling inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor have not. We report the clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular finding in 6 cases of dedifferentiated liposarcoma with inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor-like features treated at our institution. The tumors occurred mostly in middle age or elderly men, involved mostly the inguinal/s

Ipsilateral Hip and Knee Reconstruction Using an Intramedullary Total Femoral Replacement System.

The intramedullary total femoral reconstruction (ITFR) was used successfully in a 62-year-old patient with myxoid liposarcoma of the thigh and post-radiation fracture nonunion of the proximal femur and osteonecrosis of the ipsilateral knee. This described technique offers the advantage of a less invasive prosthesis insertion, preservation of the surrounding muscle attachments, better functional outcomes, and lower complication rates. Total femoral reconstruction using ITFR, preserving the femoral diaphysis, could be an option to address concomitant hip and knee defects, especially in patients

[Pre-, Post- and Intraoperative Radiation Therapy in Adult Liposarcomas].

Radiation therapy is an integral part of the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas in adults. The indication for additional radiation therapy has usually been based on known general prognostic factors, such as tumour size, localisation, grading and (anticipated) resection margin. Increasing attention has recently been paid to the role of the histological subtype. Moreover, radiation therapy techniques have distinctly improved, so that in some localisations adequate treatment has become possible for the first time. This review firstly summarises general treatment principles of radiation therapy in

Metastatic liposarcoma of the brain: case report and review of the literature.

A 74-year-old woman presented with an acute left hemiplegia. CT demonstrated an irregular mass in the right parietal region of the brain. Two years previously, she had undergone wide local excision of a liposarcoma from her thigh. Craniotomy was performed and the lesion removed. Subsequent histology confirmed a liposarcoma. The brain is an exceptionally rare site of first recurrence of a liposarcoma. This case report presents a pathological rarity and briefly reviews the literature relevant to clinicians.

Challenges in the treatment of a giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal soft-tissue sarcoma is a very rare neoplasm, the most frequent histological subtype is liposarcoma with up to 45% of all cases. Unspecific clinical presentation, late diagnosis and high local recurrence rate represent important problems in clinical practice. We present the case of an adult patient with an unusual large liposarcoma of the retroperitoneum analyzing diagnostic workup, surgical approach and therapeutic strategies. CASE REPORT: A 68-years old female was admitted with weight gain (+12 kg) and increasing abdominal girth. Computed tomography scan imaging s

Mesenchymal Neoplasms of the Kidney and Perinephric Soft Tissue.

Mesenchymal neoplasms of the kidney present challenges because they are uncommon, and because perinephric soft tissue biopsies are sometimes submitted as "kidney" masses, causing diagnostic confusion. Here, the author thoroughly reviews mesenchymal neoplasms of the kidney, including metanephric stromal tumor, classic and cellular congenital mesoblastic nephroma, anaplastic sarcoma and clear cell sarcoma of the kidney, malignant rhabdoid tumor, PEComa/angiomyolipoma, and anastomosing hemangioma. The author also discusses perinephric myxoid pseudotumor of fat, as well as diagnostic pitfalls pres

Vascular myxolipoma ("angiomyxolipoma") of the spermatic cord.

We report a case of vascular myxolipoma of the spermatic cord occurring in a 32-year-old man. Clinically, the lesion was mobile and tender. Pathologically, the tumor was encapsulated and rubbery with a beige-yellow gelatinous cut surface. Microscopically, the lesion consisted of adipose tissue with extensive areas of myxoid change and an abundance of thin and thick-walled blood vessels. We consider this tumor a vascular type of myxolipoma and propose the term angiomyxolipoma. The lesion should be distinguished from liposarcoma and aggressive angiomyxoma, which have malignant or aggressive clin

Primary gastric dedifferentiated liposarcoma resected endoscopically: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Liposarcoma is one of the most common adult mesenchymal tumors but is uncommon in the gastrointestinal tract and extremely rare in the stomach. Furthermore, the histological subtypes of liposarcoma usually reported in the stomach are well-differentiated or myxoid, and few reports have been issued on small-sized gastric liposarcomas resected endoscopically and followed up. Herein, we report a case of primary gastric dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DL) that was resected endoscopically. CASE SUMMARY: A 67-year-old female Korean patient was referred to our institution for further evalua

Clinicopathological and molecular diagnostic features of liposarcoma: A study of 27 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Liposarcomas are rare tumors, and it is difficult to collect cases in less densely populated areas. Therefore, we aimed to document more cases over a relatively long period to provide more data about the characteristics of liposarcomas. In this study, the clinicopathological features of liposarcomas were investigated in 27 patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All cases were confirmed by diagnosis through hematoxylin and eosin staining, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Combined IHC analysis was performed for murine double minute 2 (MDM2), cyclin-

Isolated intraosseous extra-gnathic orbital myxoma: a clinicopathologic case report.

A 19-year-old female student presented with painless, progressive proptosis in the right eye for the past six months causing significant cosmetic blemish and double vision. Clinical evaluation revealed normal visual acuity, normal pupillary reflex, severe proptosis, and dystopia. Orbital imaging revealed a heterogeneous mass in superior orbit displacing the globe inferiorly and causing extensive bony erosion of frontal bone superiorly and invading the frontal sinus. Excision biopsy was performed with en-bloc removal of the tumor. Surgical delivery of a slimy mass with infiltrated bony tissue l

Lipoblastoma and lipoblastomatosis: A clinicopathological study of six cases.

Lipoblastoma and lipoblastomatosis are benign adipocytic tumors seen in children less than 3 years of age. Awareness amongst surgeons of this fast growing lipomatous tumor in young children is important to avoid mutilating surgery and chemotherapy. Histological diagnosis of lipoblastoma is sometimes difficult because of close resemblance with myxoid, round cell, and well-differentiated liposarcoma. We came across a series of six cases of lipoblastoma/lipoblastomatosis, over the last 10 years (2002-2012). Of these, we had three cases of lipoblastomatosis, one of which recurred after 2 months. A

Pleomorphic liposarcoma: A clinicopathologic study of 20 FNA cases.

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic liposarcoma (PLPS) is the least common but most aggressive of all forms of liposarcoma (LPS). Its diagnosis relies on the recognition of pleomorphic lipoblasts (PLBs), whose numbers vary considerably. Because few large fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy studies exist, the authors review their experience with PLPS. METHODS: The authors' cytopathology files were searched for PLPS with histopathologic verification. FNA biopsy smears were performed via standard techniques. RESULTS: Twenty cases from 20 patients (male/female ratio, 2.3/1; age range, 22-77 years; mean age,

Primary retroperitoneal liposarcoma: clinical and histological analysis of ten cases.

Retroperitoneal liposarcoma constitutes an uncommon and locally aggressive malignancy. We performed a retrospective analysis of 10 patients (6 males; mean age: 63.2+/-11 years) with histologically proven retroperitoneal liposarcoma seen at our institution between 1999 and 2007. Presence of a palpable abdominal mass was the main symptom at diagnosis. All patients underwent complete surgical resection. Negative microscopic margin was achieved in four cases. Histological analysis revealed the following subtypes: well-differentiated (6 cases), dedifferentiated (two cases), pleomorphic, and myxoid/

Trabectedin in the treatment of soft tissue sarcoma: Real-world data on effectiveness, safety, and financial implications from a European comprehensive cancer center.

Soft-tissue sarcomas (STS) comprise over 150 histological subtypes, with advanced cases showing poor prognosis (5-year survival <10%). Trabectedin, a synthetic alkaloid, is frequently used after anthracycline-based chemotherapy failure. Despite the withdrawal of reimbursement in France in 2016 due to debated efficacy and safety, it remains in clinical use, imposing financial strain on hospitals. This retrospective single-center study evaluated trabectedin's efficacy, safety, and cost in 68 patients treated between 2019 and 2023. L-sarcomas accounted for 78% of cases, including uterine leiomyos

Recurrent aggressive angiomyxoma of vagina--a case report.

Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare tumour, which presents as a painless expanding mass in the vulvo-vaginal region. It usually occurs in 2nd to 3rd decades of life. It behaves like a low-grade sarcoma with high propensity for local spread and recurrence and can involve vulva, perineum, vagina and urinary bladder. It is difficult to differentiate clinically this tumour from other mesenchymal tumours occurring in this region. Microscopically it must be differentiated from malignant tumours with myxoid change, like liposarcoma and myxoid leiomyosarcoma. Hence, histopathologic examination has a cent

Liposarcoma in a Backyard Silkie and Retrospective Summary of Neoplasms Diagnosed in Backyard Chickens Submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System, 2008-2017.

Liposarcomas are a malignant neoplasm of adipocytes, and are rarely diagnosed in avian species. This case report describes the evidence supporting a diagnosis of metastatic liposarcoma in a backyard silkie chicken. On September 28, 2017, a dead 3-yr-old backyard silkie chicken, with a history of unknown skin lesions involving the entire body and severe weight loss, was submitted to California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System-Turlock branch for necropsy. At necropsy, raised necrotic lesions involving the majority of the skin and multiple nodules in the liver, spleen, and bone mar
