BACKGROUND: Biliary mucinous cystic neoplasms are rare cystic lesions of the liver which carry pre-malignant potential. Given the scarcity of reports in the literature, they pose a considerable challenge to clinical management, particularly with regards to accurate pre-operative diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 37-year-old Tunisian woman who presented with subacute right upper quadrant pain and a large multi-loculated cystic lesion, most consistent with a hydatid cyst. She underwent an open right hepatectomy, and pathology surprisingly revealed a biliary mucinous cystade

Cases of patients developing lymphoma and cutaneous neoplasms after long-term methotrexate therapy are well documented in the literature; however, there are no reported cases of other neoplasms resulting from methotrexate therapy. A 52-year-old woman who had been on methotrexate for 9 years for psoriatic arthritis was found to have abnormal liver function tests on screening. Investigation with ultrasound, CT scanning and MRCP showed a hilar cholangiocarcinoma and a synchronous right renal tumour. A left hemi-hepatectomy extended to segments 5 and 8 with the formation of a hepaticojejunostomy w

BACKGROUND: Malignant mixed tumors of the liver in adults are rare. To the authors' knowledge, twenty-four cases of primary malignant mixed hepatic tumors have been reported in the literature since the first description by Walter in 1896. Many of the previously reported cases are now considered mixed hepatoblastoma, primary hepatocellular carcinomas with focal sarcomatous metaplasia, or epithelioid hemangioendothelioma.
METHODS: Clinical, radiologic, histologic and immunohistochemic methods were used to characterize an unusual example of a mixed malignant tumor of the adult liver that the aut

This report presents a rare case of a 45-year-old man diagnosed with a primary hepatic alpha-fetoprotein-producing neuroendocrine neoplasm, a condition rarely reported in the literature. The patient presented with initial symptoms of back and epigastric pain, after which multiple liver lesions were discovered on contrast-enhanced computed tomography, suggesting intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses confirmed the diagnosis of alpha-fetoprotein-producing neuroendocrine neoplasm that was further supported by genetic testing, which revealed FGFR2 and T

Peliosis hepatis is a rare lesion characterized by blood-filled cavities randomly distributed in the liver. It has been associated with the administration of medications such androgen-anabolic steroids, estrogens, oral contraceptives, and azathioprine. Its diagnosis is most reliably obtained by arteriogram and liver biopsy. Treatment consists of the discontinuance of those medications known to induce liver changes. Surgical treatment is reserved for those cases where a concomitant neoplasm or aneurysm is found.

The concept of preventable mortality makes it possible to assess health care reserves and to identify priorities of their improvement at the regional level. It was established that in the Republic of Buryatia during 2005-2019, the percentage of the first group by the levels of prevention of causes of death of the old list (Preventable) decreased by 6.1%, mainly due to injuries, poisoning and other consequences of external factors. The percentage of the second and third groups increased by 4.4% and 1.7%, respectively. The cause of increasing of preventable mortality are malignant neoplasms and

Magnetic resonance (MR) cholangiopancreatography has proved a robust and noninvasive imaging modality for evaluating the biliary and pancreatic ducts without the use of ionizing radiation. Although MR cholangiopancreatography reliably depicts the main extrahepatic and intrahepatic bile ducts, it does not depict the segmental intrahepatic ducts unless they are dilated. The segmental ducts are difficult to visualize with MR cholangiopancreatography because of their small caliber and the limited spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio achievable with standard MR pulse sequences. However, vis

This case report describes a 77-year old woman with a leiomyosarcoma of subhepatic inferior caval vein. The presented symptom was unspecific abdominal pain. Ultrasound and CT suggested a primary liver tumor. MRI revealed retroperitoneal location of the neoplasm. The tumor was resected completely and ICV was replaced by a PTF-graft. Vascular leiomyosarcoma is a rare tumor entity, which often is diagnosed in advanced stage. Depending on location it can be mistaken for neoplasms of other organs.

Myelolipomas are rare benign neoplasms that commonly develop in the adrenal glands. Less frequently, they can affect other organs such as the liver, stomach, liver, lung, and retroperitoneum. It affects more women, with an average age of around 61 years. Histologically, they are composed of mature adipose tissue and hematopoietic cells. With the evolution of immunohistochemistry, there are characteristics that can differentiate from malignant tumors such as liposarcomas. Its treatment remains based on surgical resection and long-term outpatient follow-up.

The clinicalpathological findings in a 32-year old woman with ataxia-telangiectasia are presented. This is the oldest patient with this disease to be studied thoroughly clinically and at autopsy. Multiple small gliovascular malformations in the brain and spinal cord and telangiectasis of the liver were found. Other advanced lesions of ataxia-telangiectasia are illustrated. The vascular malformations of the central nervous system and liver are unique. The patient died of a malignant lymphoproliferative disorder and had five other malignant and benign neoplasms.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to present a case of hepatic mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN-H) that was completely resected by laparoscopy.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 47-year-old female exhibited mild elevation of serum liver enzyme levels. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a 45-mm multilocular cystic tumor in segment IV of the liver, along with intermittent border calcification and minimal wall thickness. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed fluid-to-fluid level in the cystic tumor, thereby increasing the suspicion of a mild hemorrhage. The patient underwent laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) with a

Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is an uncommon neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that primarily affects the pleura and mediastinum. SFTs may occur elsewhere in the body including the liver, peritoneum, orbit and other soft tissues. Recent advances in immunohistochemical analysis have allowed greater identification of SFTs. Nevertheless, radiologically it remains difficult to distinguish SFTs of the liver from other solitary tumours as they have many common features. We report a case of SFT of the liver and highlight the potential inaccuracy of percutaneous biopsy in the diagnosis of large solitary

Personal experience in the monitoring of liver function and morphology after resection using hepatobiliary HIDA 99mTc scintigraphy is reported. This investigation provides useful functional and morphological data. In three patients subjected to right hepatectomy for echinococcosis the examination performed preoperatively and 25 and 90 days after surgery revealed functional normalisation of the residual liver and biliary excretion. On the basis of this experience and data from the literature the value of the technique is confirmed and it is suggested that it might be usefully adopted in the stu

Angiosarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of vascular endothelial cells. A majority are primarily in the skin. Angiosarcoma of the head and neck is the most common form, but only constitutes 0.1% of all head and neck malignancies. We present an extraordinary case of a 71-year-old man 6 months status postorthotopic liver transplant secondary to end-stage liver disease from cryptogenic cirrhosis, who presented to the liver clinic with a rapidly growing scalp tumor and hypodense lesions within the liver. Further work-up and biopsies confirmed the first documented case of primary scalp angiosarcom

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the gastrointestinal tract is an extremely rare high-grade neoplasm with poor prognosis. For advanced LMS with distant metastasis, the decision as to the choice of the most appropriate therapeutic strategy, including chemotherapy and surgery, is difficult. Here, we present an unusual case of LMS of the sigmoid colon with liver metastases and gastric cancer. The survival of this patient was prolonged by a combined modality therapy involving chemotherapy and surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old woman who had been diagnosed with advanced gastric cancer an

Transplantation has become the method of choice for treatment of patients with irreversible severe liver dysfunction. Vascular thrombosis or stenosis, biliary obstruction, hemorrhage, posttransplantation neoplasm, and rejection are some of the most common potential complications. Most complications cause significant morbidity and mortality after liver transplantation. The appearance of vascular complications in posttransplantation patients is illustrated in this article.

Extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumors (E-GIST) are group of soft tissue neoplasm, which originates from outside the gastrointestinal tract and comprises less than 5% of the total GIST. Most commonly, they originate from the omentum, mesentery, retroperitoneum or the solid organs like liver and the pancreas. E-GIST arising from the sac of the jejunal mesentery, and mimicking preoperatively as a colonic neoplasm is very rare. Here we report an interesting case of a 55-year-old male, who presented with pain abdomen for 4 months duration. Contrast enhanced computed tomography was suggestive of rig

INTRODUCTION: Immunodeficient patients, including the recipients of solid organs, exhibit an increase in the incidence of neoplasms. Post-transplant smooth muscle tumor (PTSMT) is a distinct and infrequent entity of these groups of neoplasms. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is considered to be involved in the etiology of this neoplasm.
CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old man who underwent liver transplantation presented with abdominal pain and diarrhea for several months. He had a history of resistant systemic cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection after transplantation. Radiologic evaluation and colonoscopy reveal

This report documents a case of a fatal primary malignant neoplasm of the liver with metastases to the lymph nodes of the porta hepatis and the pubic bone. Profound, intractable hypoglycemia was seen during the course of the disease. No immunoassayable insulin was found in the blood during episodes of severe, symptomatic hypoglycemia. The neoplasm was composed of uniform polygonal cells with distinct cytoplasmic borders growing in broad strands with a tendency toward nesting and was morphologically similar to neoplasms of neural crest derivation. The presence of osmophilic, membrane-bound gran
