Contraceptive Sterilization: Introducing A Couple Perspective to Examine Sociodemographic Differences in Use.

CONTEXT: Most studies of contraceptive use have relied solely on the woman's perspective, but because men's attitudes and preferences are also important, analytic approaches based on couples should also be explored. METHODS: Data from the 2006-2010 and 2011-2013 rounds of the National Survey of Family Growth yielded a sample of 4,591 men and women who were married or cohabiting with an opposite-sex partner and who had completed their intended childbearing. Respondents' reports of both their own and their partners' characteristics and behaviors were employed in two sets of analyses examining e

Comparison of contraceptive sales before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sales of modern contraceptive methods in Brazil. METHODS: Monthly sales data were analysed of short-acting reversible contraceptive methods and long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods (implants and intrauterine contraception) and COVID-19 related deaths. Contraceptive methods were grouped as follows: emergency contraception (EC); oral contraception, vaginal rings and transdermal patches; injectable contraception; LARC methods including the copper intrauterine device (Cu-IUD); and LARC methods excl

Contraception for women with chronic medical conditions: an evidence-based approach.

Women of reproductive age with chronic medical conditions are at risk for unplanned pregnancy. If timing for pregnancy is not optimal for these women with medical conditions, they may be at high risk for adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Women with chronic medical conditions are in great need of highly effective contraception. Almost all women, including those with medical conditions, are eligible for at least 1 of the available long-acting reversible contraceptive methods. Health care providers must recognize both the risk for pregnancy and the benefit of highly effective contraception to

Contraception for cancer survivors.

Women who have survived cancer may need guidance in choosing a method of contraception. This paper reviews the evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of available methods of contraception for cancer survivors and concludes that the Copper T380A intrauterine device (IUD), a highly effective, reversible, long-acting, hormone-free method should be considered a first-line contraceptive option for women with a history of a hormonally mediated cancer. However, the levonorgestrel-containing IUD may be preferable for women being treated with tamoxifen and women who have survived non-hormonally me

Young Women's Complex Patterns of Contraceptive Use: Findings from an Australian Cohort Study.

CONTEXT: Unintended pregnancy is common among young women. Understanding how such women use contraceptives- including method combinations-is essential to providing high-quality contraceptive care. METHODS: Data were from a representative cohort of 2,965 Australian women aged 18-23 who participated in the 2012-2013 Contraceptive Use, Pregnancy Intention and Decisions baseline survey, had been heterosexually active in the previous six months, and were not pregnant or trying to conceive. Latent class analysis was employed to characterize women's contraceptive choices; multinomial logistic regres

Contraception after delivery and short interpregnancy intervals among women in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate women's patterns of contraceptive use after delivery and the association between method use and risk of pregnancy within 18 months. METHODS: We used the 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth to examine women's contraceptive use after delivery and at 3, 6, 12, and 18 months after giving birth. The sample included 3,005 births that occurred within 3 years of the survey date and for which information on contraceptive use was available. We estimated multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models to assess the association between women's method use and risk of pregnanc

Influence of age on tolerability, safety and effectiveness of subdermal contraceptive implants.

The use of long-acting contraceptive methods is on the rise. The aim of this study was to describe the main variables (effectiveness, tolerability, menstrual bleeding) associated with the use of subdermal contraceptive implants and to investigate the influence of age on these variables. This was a descriptive, retrospective, observational study of 221 cases of contraceptive implants inserted at a Spanish hospital between 2006 and 2015. The mean age of implant users was 31.2 ± 7.5 years. Effectiveness was 100% and good tolerability was recorded for 86.5%. Infrequent bleeding was the most common

Who can afford a Mirena® for contraception?

INTRODUCTION The Mirena®, a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS), is an effective form of contraception that lasts for 5 years. In New Zealand, it is not subsidised for contraception and the device costs NZ$340 at Family Planning clinics. AIM To determine if there is a difference in the socioeconomic status and ethnicity of women who chose an LNG-IUS for contraception compared with women opting for a subsidised long-acting contraceptive (copper intrauterine device (IUD) or Jadelle® implant) or who qualified for a Special Authority Mirena® (funded by Pharmac, as treatment for

Strengthening implant provision and acceptance in South Africa with the ‘Any woman, any place, any time’ approach: An essential step towards reducing unintended pregnancies.

Progress in reducing unintended pregnancies in South Africa is slow. The implant, introduced in 2014, expanded the range of available longacting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) and held much promise. Uptake, however, has declined precipitously, in spite of its ‘unmatched effectiveness’ and high levels of satisfaction for most users. We propose policy and provider interventions to raise implant use, underscored by a ‘LARC-first’ approach. Contraceptive counselling should focus on the particular benefits of LARCs and methods be presented in order of effectiveness. Moreover, implants hold parti

Exploring machine learning insights into long-acting reversible family planning usage in Ethiopia: analysis of the PMA 2023 dataset.

INTRODUCTION: Ethiopia faces challenges in Long-Acting Reversible Family Planning (LARFP) adoption despite its efficacy. Traditional statistical methods have a limited capacity to capture nonlinear determinants. This study leverages machine learning (ML) to identify predictors of LARFP use using the 2021–2023 Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA) Ethiopia dataset. METHODS: Twenty-four predictors across geographic, socioeconomic, healthcare access, and behavioral domains were analyzed using seven machine learning models evaluated via stratified 5-fold cross-validation. RESULTS: Decision Tree

Contraception for adolescents with chronic rheumatic diseases.

Contraception is an important issue and should be a matter of concern in every medical visit of adolescent and young patients with chronic rheumatic diseases. This narrative review discusses contraception methods in adolescents with juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE), antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM). Barrier methods are safe and their use should be encouraged for all adolescents with chronic rheumatic diseases. Combined oral contraceptives (COC) are strictly prohibited for JSLE and APS patients with positive anti

The prevalence of contraceptive use among postpartum women and its associated factors during the early phase of COVID-19 outbreak: a time series study.

BACKGROUND: Unintended pregnancies can adversely affect maternal health, preventable through timely postpartum contraception. During the COVID-19 pandemic, family planning services were constrained by policies that curtailed outpatient visits. We investigated the prevalence of postpartum contraceptive initiation at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital (KCMH) during January to June 2020, comparing with the same period in 2019, and identified factors associated with such initiation. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 4506 postpartum women who delivered at KCMH during the study period.

THE Environmental Impact of Contraceptive Methods - A Systematic Review.

Contraception contributes to healthcare's global environmental footprint through pharmaceutical emissions and disposable waste. Steroid hormones used in hormonal contraception are widely detected in aquatic environments, raising concerns regarding their ecotoxicological risks. This review synthesizes environmental impacts of registered (non-)hormonal contraceptives, aiming to compare their environmental sustainability and estimate comparative ecotoxicological risk profiles of hormonal methods. A systematic literature search of Medline, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, and Scopus was con
