Rapidly accumulating evidence from functional brain imaging studies indicates that developmental reading disability is associated with a functional disruption of the brain circuits that normally develop to support reading-related processes. This article briefly overviews recent advances in methods that capture the anatomical outline and temporal (dynamic) features of regional brain activation during performance of reading tasks. One of these methods, magnetoencephalography (MEG) or magnetic sources imaging (MSI) is described in more detail in the context of investigations of changes in spatiot

We report two patients with left hemisphere lesions who had no normal left hemispheric responses to right median nerve stimulus on magnetoencephalography but displayed right area 3b responses. One patient had suffered a severe left hemispheric contusion and the other left hemispheric infarction. Equivalent current dipoles of these ipsilateral responses were detected on the central sulcus adjacent to the location of the N20m response to left median nerve stimulus. The somatosensory afferent pathway from the hand may extend directly to the ipsilateral area 3b without following the transcallosal

BACKGROUND: Children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (HCP) experience upper limb somatosensory and motor deficits. Although constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) improves motor function, its impact on somatosensory function remains underinvestigated.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate somatosensory perception and related brain responses in children with HCP, before and after a somatosensory enhanced CIMT protocol, as measured using clinical sensory and motor assessments and magnetoencephalography.
METHODS: Children with HCP attended a somatosensory enhanced CIMT camp.

BACKGROUND: Visual-spatial processing deficits have been previously linked to heavy alcohol use, but the underlying neurological mechanisms are poorly understood. Neuroimaging studies have shown alcohol-related aberrations in occipital cortices that appear to be associated with these neuropsychological deficits in visual-spatial processing, however the neural dynamics underlying this altered processing remains unknown.
METHODS: Twenty-three adults with high scores on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - Consumption (male: ⩾5, female: ⩾4) were compared to 30 demographically-matched

Diagnosis of neurological disease by imaging has greatly improved in recent years. Precise morphological information can be obtained by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and biochemical or electrophysiological dynamic changes can be assessed by positron emission tomography or magnetoencephalography. The transcription of such biochemical or electrophysiological data on computed tomographic scan or magnetic resonance imaging can precisely demonstrate the local dynamic information in the brain. Three-dimensional imaging also provides accurate intelligence on the morphological st

Diagnosis in epilepsy depends on several distinct objectives-including interictal epileptiform discharge (IED) detection, source localisation of epileptiform activity, and seizure classification-each shaped by the underlying sensing technology. This review examines the opportunities that quantum magnetic sensing offers within this diagnostic framework, with particular emphasis on translational readiness and clinical potential. Seizure classification is included to situate the broader clinical context of epilepsy diagnostics, whereas the review of quantum sensing evidence is focused on IED dete

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit multifaceted changes in neurophysiological brain activity, hypothesized to represent a global cortical slowing effect. Using task-free magnetoencephalography and extensive clinical assessments, we found that neurophysiological slowing in PD is differentially associated with motor and non-motor symptoms along a sagittal gradient over the cortical anatomy. In superior parietal regions, neurophysiological slowing reflects an adverse effect and scales with cognitive and motor impairments, while across the inferior frontal cortex, neurophysiological sl

Decreases in oscillatory alpha- and beta-band power have been consistently found in spoken-word production. These have been linked to both motor preparation and conceptual-lexical retrieval processes. However, the observed power decreases have a broad frequency range that spans two "classic" (sensorimotor) bands: alpha and beta. It remains unclear whether alpha- and beta-band power decreases contribute independently when a spoken word is planned. Using a re-analysis of existing magnetoencephalography data, we probed whether the effects in alpha and beta bands are spatially distinct. Participan

The present study investigated the effects of hypocapnia and hypercapnia on human somatosensory processing by utilizing somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) with magnetoencephalography (MEG). Thirteen volunteers participated in two experiments separately to measure respiratory and cardiovascular data and SEFs. Both experiments consisted of a combination of normal and rapid respiratory rhythms and two inspiratory gas conditions (air and a hypercapnic gas); normal breathing with air (NB), rapid breathing with air (RB), normal breathing with the hypercapnic gas (NB+Gas), and rapid breathin

Since the first demonstrations of network hyperexcitability in scientific models of Alzheimer's disease, a growing body of clinical studies have identified subclinical epileptiform activity and associated cognitive decline in patients with Alzheimer's disease. An obvious problem presented in these studies is lack of sensitive measures to detect and quantify network hyperexcitability in human subjects. In this study we examined whether altered neuronal synchrony can be a surrogate marker to quantify network hyperexcitability in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Using magnetoencephalography (ME

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) poses a considerable burden on healthcare systems. Whilst most patients recover quickly, a significant number suffer from sequelae that are not accompanied by measurable structural damage. Understanding the neural underpinnings of these debilitating effects and developing a means to detect injury, would address an important unmet clinical need. It could inform interventions and help predict prognosis. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) affords excellent sensitivity in probing neural function and presents significant promise for assessing mTBI, with abnormal neural

PURPOSE: To report the rare opportunity to study ictal magnetoencephalography (MEG) in a 26 year old man with simple partial status epilepticus that presented as elementary visual hallucinations (EVHs) in the right upper visual field.
METHODS: The patient described his EVHs as "snowing on TV," "flickering lights," and "rotating coloured balls" that continued for several days. MEG and simultaneous EEG were recorded twice: during an episode of EVHs (ictal recordings) and after EVHs were controlled by medications (interictal recordings).
RESULTS: During EVHs, MEG showed continuous periodic epil

BACKGROUND: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a method of determining the brain activity noninvasively be detecting the magnetic fields associated with neuronal electrical activities.
METHODS: By using 37-channel DC-superconducting quantum interference devices, MEG activity was recorded in a patient with neurocysticerosis, who had a long-term history of epilepsy.
RESULTS: MEG clearly demonstrated accumulation of current dipoles originating from high-frequency waves around the cysticercal cyst, while scalp electroencephalogram failed to reveal paroxysmal discharge. Intraoperative electrocortico

High-frequency oscillations (HFO) have been suggested to reflect the activity of thalamocortical and/or intracortical neurons bursting at high frequencies. These circuits seem to be involved in pathophysiological mechanisms of focal dystonia. In healthy subjects, we characterized the spectrotemporal properties of HFO patterns evoked by dominant-hand median-nerve stimulation, using magnetoencephalography coupled with time-frequency analysis. Then, we investigated HFO in patients with writer's cramp and found that HFO patterns are strongly decreased in power and disorganized in time. This suppor

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: We used the uniquely high combined spatial and temporal resolution of magnetoencephalography to characterize working memory (WM)-related modulation of beta band activity in neuroleptic-free patients with schizophrenia in comparison to a large sample of performance-matched healthy controls. We also tested for effects of antipsychotic medication on identified differences in these same patients.
STUDY DESIGN: Inpatients with schizophrenia (n = 21) or psychotic disorder not otherwise specified (n = 4) completed N-back and control tasks during magnetoencephalography whil

BACKGROUND: Several studies on carpal tunnel syndrome have reported pain that exists beyond the median nerve territory of the affected hand. However, the mechanism is unknown.
PURPOSE: We investigated the cause of extra-territorial pain by the analysis of clinical assessments and cortical activity using magnetoencephalography.
METHODS: To compare patients with and without extra-territorial pain, fourteen patients with carpal tunnel syndrome were assessed using clinical examination, such as patients' profile, paresthesia, physical tests, and psychological tests. The physical assessment includ

The comorbidity of 'core characteristics' and sensorimotor abnormalities in autism implies abnormalities in brain development of a general and pervasive nature and atypical organization of sensory cortex. By using magnetoencephalography, we examined the cortical response to passive tactile stimulation of the thumb and index finger of the dominant hand and lip of the individuals with autism spectrum disorder and typically developing persons. The distance between the cortical representations of thumb and the lip was significantly larger in the autism group than in typicals. Moreover, in cortex,

Abnormal brain excitability may provide the susceptibility for triggering migraine attacks. Antiepileptic drugs may diminish neuronal excitability and consequently reduce the frequency of migraine. Because migraine aura is predominantly visual, hyperexcitability of the occipital cortex has been the focus of investigations. Functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and magnetoencephalography provide the most consistent evidence for the role of brain hyperexcitability in migraine and confirm that triggering an abnormal electric and metabolic event consistent with the cortical spreading

Simultaneous acquisition of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) provides complementary hemodynamic and electrophysiological information for studies of neurovascular coupling and has previously been demonstrated using fiber-based fNIRS implementations. Compared with fiber-based systems, fiberless fNIRS is lightweight and eliminates fiber-induced mechanical constraints; however, its integration with MEG remains challenging due to stringent magnetic compatibility requirements. Here, we present a magnetically compatible and fiberless fNIRS system enabling

The ability to successfully retain and manipulate information in working memory (WM) requires that objects' individual features are bound into cohesive representations; yet, the mechanisms supporting feature binding remain unclear. Binding (or swap) errors, where memorized features are erroneously associated with the wrong object, can provide a window into the intrinsic limits in capacity of WM that represent a key bottleneck in our cognitive ability. We tested the hypothesis that binding in WM is accomplished via neural phase synchrony and that swap errors result from perturbations in this sy
