Development and implementation of an animal-inclusive Community-Led Total Sanitation program for rural Mali.

BACKGROUND: Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) does not formally include animal feces management, despite its goal to prevent fecal matter from entering the environment. By integrating animal feces management into an existing community-level program to safely manage human feces, greater reductions in exposure to feces may be achieved, supporting improvements to both human and animal health. METHODS: We adapted the CLTS intervention to be animal-inclusive and piloted the resulting intervention in twenty-five villages; ten villages received an integrated human and animal feces CLTS program (

A tale of SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance in Mali: Variants introductions and transmission dynamics.

Despite the global scale of SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance, data from West Africa are limited. In Mali 33,197 confirmed cases and 743 deaths (case fatality ratio: 2.23%) were recorded between March 2020 and August 2025. This study aimed to provide the first comprehensive genomic reconstruction of SARS-CoV-2 variant introductions, transmission pathways, and evolutionary trends in Mali from 2020 to 2023. A total of 548 Malian sequences were used for lineages assignment and variant tracking. For the reconstruction of transmission dynamic a high quality subset of 305 Malian sequences (passing 90%…

Coverage and determinants of Intermittent Preventive Treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) in Cameroon, Guinea, Mali, and Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Malaria poses a serious issue for pregnant women in African regions. It is crucial to comprehend the various factors that impact receiving IPTp during ANC checkups. These are important for the well-being of both pregnant mothers and their unborn children. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the determinants of IPTp coverage among women in Cameroon, Guinea, Mali, and Nigeria. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study utilized secondary data from the Malaria Indicator Surveys (MIS) across Cameroon, Guinea, Mali, and Nigeria, focusing on women who received IPTp during pregnancy…

[Diagnosis and evaluation of the response to treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia in Mali by fluorescent in situ hybridization].

OBJECTIVE: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a hematologic malignancy characterized by the presence of the Philadelphia chromosome or its molecular equivalent, the BCR/ABL1 fusion gene. Diagnosis and monitoring of CML are done by detecting this chromosome, the BCR/ABL1 gene, or the BCR/ABL1 transcript. In Mali, genetic tools of diagnosis and follow-up are still lacking, so we did this study with the objectives of developing the FISH technique to diagnose, to follow up, and to characterize the cytogenetic profile of CML patients. METHODS: We carried out FISH technique by using the dual color d…

Trends in malaria epidemiological factors following the implementation of current control strategies in Dangassa, Mali.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, three strategies have reduced severe malaria cases and deaths in endemic regions of Africa, Asia and the Americas, specifically: (1) artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT); (2) insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs); and, (3) intermittent preventive treatment with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine in pregnancy (IPTp). The rationale for this study was to examine communities in Dangassa, Mali where, in 2015, two additional control strategies were implemented: ITN universal coverage and seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) among children under 5 years old. METHODS: …

Improving the efficiency of scale-up and deployment of community health workers in Mali: A geospatial analysis.

Optimising the scale and deployment of community health workers (CHWs) is important for maximizing geographical accessibility of integrated primary health care (PHC) services. Yet little is known about approaches for doing so. We used geospatial analysis to model optimised scale-up and deployment of CHWs in Mali, to inform strategic and operational planning by the Ministry of Health and Social Development. Accessibility catchments were modelled based on travel time, accounting for barriers to movement. We compared geographic coverage of the estimated population, under-five deaths, and plasmodi…

[Vulva bilharzia in a 10-year-old girl living in Kirane-Mali: a case report].

Genital schistosomiasis is mainly located in the neck of the uterus and the vagina, less frequently on the vulva, the fallopian tubes and ovaries and rarely in the body of the uterus. We here report the case of a 10-year-old girl admitted with a swelling on the vulva in whom histological examination showed cutaneous schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma haematobium. Outcome was favorable with a single 40 mg/kg mg dose of praziquantel, with tumor regression.

Optimal mode for delivery of seasonal malaria chemoprevention in Ouelessebougou, Mali: A cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC), the administration of complete therapeutic courses of antimalarials to children aged 3-59 months during the malaria transmission season, is a new strategy recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for malaria control in Sahelian countries such as Mali with seasonal transmission. The strategy is a highly cost-effective approach to reduce malaria burden in these areas. Despite the substantial benefits of SMC on malaria infection and disease, the optimal approach to deliver SMC remains to be determined. While fixed-point delivery (FPD) …

Effect of red blood cell variants on childhood malaria in Mali: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Red blood cell variants protect African children from severe falciparum malaria. However, their individual and interactive effects on mild disease and parasite density, and their modification by age-dependent immunity, are poorly understood. In this study, we address these knowledge gaps in a prospective cohort study of malaria risk and Plasmodium falciparum densities in Malian children. METHODS: The Kenieroba Innate Defense Study for Malaria (KIDS-Malaria) was a 4-year prospective cohort study of children aged 6 months to 17 years undertaken in Mali between 2008 and 2011. Red blo…
