First report of DNAI2-associated primary ciliary dyskinesia in Libya: A case from a nonconsanguineous marriage.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an autosomal recessive condition resulting from defects in motile cilia structure and function, impairing mucociliary clearance. This defect predisposes such patients to frequent sinopulmonary infections. The chronic productive cough is a key symptom, with progressive bronchiectasis as a common accompaniment, although diagnosis is delayed, with the mean age at diagnosis being about 11 years. Recent studies have indicated that PCD is highly genetically heterogeneous with more than 50 PCD genes identified to date. Herein, we describe an 11-year-old child with

Child marriage prevention as a preconception health strategy: A modelling-based cost-benefit analysis in Senegal.

OBJECTIVES: This modelling study evaluates the costs and benefits of implementing community sensitisation interventions to prevent child marriage in Senegal. By focusing specifically on the prevention of neonatal mortality and stillbirths, it offers a new perspective on the broader health implications of such interventions, addressing a critical gap in the economic evaluation of preconception health strategies. STUDY DESIGN: Model-based economic evaluation. METHODS: We developed a deterministic, cohort-based simulation model to estimate the economic and societal impacts of community sensitis…

Starting from scratch in a patrilocal society: how women build networks after marriage in rural Bangladesh.

Humans rely on both kin and non-kin social ties for a wide range of support. In patrilocal societies that practice village exogamy, women ca … d village (Bengali: n = 317, Santal: n = 36, Hajong: n = 39, Mandi: n = 36). Women who migrated for marriage started with almost no adult close kin (mean 0.1) compared to women who remained in their childhood village (mean 2.4). However, immigrants compensated for the lack of genetic kin by a combination of close affinal kin and close friends. By their lat …

Perceived psychosocial impacts of legalized same-sex marriage: A scoping review of sexual minority adults' experiences.

A growing body of literature provides important insights into the meaning and impact of the right to marry a same-sex partner among sexual minority people. We conducted a scoping review to 1) identify and describe the psychosocial impacts of equal marriage rights among sexual minority adults, and 2) explore sexual minority women (SMW) perceptions of equal marriage rights and whether psychosocial impacts differ by sex. Using Arksey and O'Malley's framework we reviewed peer-reviewed English-language publications from 2000 through 2019. We searched six databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Web of …

Understanding Forced Marriage in the United States: Developing Measures, Examining its Nature, and Assessing Gender Disparities.

In Western European countries and Canada, an emerging scholarly literature has helped inform awareness and prevention efforts and justice system responses to address forced marriages. But, little is known about this issue in the United States. The present study, the first large scale examination of forced marriage prevalence in the United States, surveys a national sample of Internet users over 18 years of age. Using a Google Consumer Survey platform, this exploratory study seeks to estimate prevalence of and gender disparities in forced marriages for this sample; examine conditions and circum…

Exploring How Christian Women with Sexual Pain and Difficulty Make Sense of Sexual Functioning in Marriage.

Female sexual difficulties such as pain and dysfunction occur within a complex biopsychosocial ecosystem that evolves across the lifespan. This qualitative study explored how a large sample of Christian women (N = 629) who have experienced sexual difficulties in marriage construct meaning around key dimensions of their sexual functioning, including sexual satisfaction and desire. Reflexive thematic analysis of open-ended survey responses revealed the multifactorial attributions Christian women make when accounting for stability and change in their sexual functioning over time. Findings indicat…

What pushes males to marry underage girls? Demand-side insights of child marriage from northern Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the factors that drive males to marry underage girls (i.e., girls below the legal age of marriage), with a specific focus on how individual, household, and contextual characteristics of males relate to the prevalence of child marriage in geographically isolated areas, particularly the riverine islands (chars) of Bangladesh. STUDY DESIGN: This study employs a cross-sectional design, which is appropriate for capturing data at a single point in time. In this case, data were collected between March and April 2024. METHODS: With a sample of 5415 individuals, …

Women's experiences of marital rape and sexual violence within marriage in India: evidence from service records.

Sexual violence within marriage is common and manifests in various forms, including marital rape. It has serious physical and mental health consequences and is a violation of women's sexual and reproductive health rights. Marital rape, reproductive coercion, inserting objects in the vagina or anus, and withholding sexual pleasure are forms of violence routinely experienced by women. Based on service records of survivors coming to public hospitals in an Indian city, this paper presents their pathways to disclosure and institutional responses such as hospitals and police. The findings highlight …

Marriage practices, decision-making process and contraception use among young married men in rural Odisha, India.

Research on sexual and reproductive health including contraception use has predominantly focussed on women's behaviour. Much less is known about men's behaviour. We investigated the links between marriage practices and decision-making about contraception use among young married men in rural Odisha. This cross-sectional study used a mixed methods design. Data were collected through household surveys and in-depth interviews. Study findings revealed that over half of men were ill prepared for marriage and lacked understanding about what it would entail. Familiarity and communication between spous…

Evidence-based evolution of child marriage prevention-a decade of sexual and reproductive health programming in Pakistan.

Child marriage in Pakistan is sustained by deeply entrenched patriarchal norms and socioeconomic structures that limit girls' agency and access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). This paper analyses a decade of programme learning from the Awareness to Action project (A2A, 2013-2016) and the Yes I Do Alliance (YID, 2016-2020), drawing on a baseline study, mid-term evaluation, external endline evaluation, and the YID inception report. Findings showed substantial individual- and community-level gains: 80% of adolescent girls correctly defined reproductive health at midline, 92% …

Reduced prevalence of rhinitis and eczema but not wheezing in native-born children from cross-border marriages.

BACKGROUND: Gene-environment interactions may lead to varying predispositions to different allergies. Children from cross-border marriage families were predominantly born in Taiwan. This study aimed to compare allergic disease prevalence in children from families with foreign female spouses to those with Taiwanese female spouses and assess the association between female spouse origin and allergic diseases. METHODS: This population-based, cross-sectional survey on 3172 grade-one schoolchildren aged 6-8 in Taiwan used stratified cluster random sampling. We used logistic regression to examine th…

Reduced ovarian reserve among female offspring of consanguineous marriages in the Middle East-a mini review.

BACKGROUND: Consanguineous marriages remain prevalent in many regions of the world, particularly within the Middle East, where reported prevalence exceeds 50% in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. Despite evidence that consanguineous marriages increase genetic risks through increased levels of homozygosity, which might lead to gene dysfunction, their impact on female fertility remains unclear. Although the data is limited and inconsistent, female offspring of consanguineous marriages appear to have a higher risk of reduced ovarian reserve compared to their peer…
