Objectives. Tutoplast processed human cadaveric ossicular allografts are a safe alternative for ossicular reconstruction where there is insufficient material suitable for autograft ossiculoplasty. We present a series of 7 consecutive cases showing excellent air-bone gap closure following canal-wall-down mastoidectomy for cholesteatoma and reconstruction of the middle ear using Tutoplast processed malleus. Patients and Methods. Tympanoplasty with Tutoplast processed malleus was performed in seven patients to reconstruct the middle ear following canal-wall-down mastoidectomy in a tertiary ENT ce

When cochlear implantation was first introduced, the mastoidectomy and posterior tympanotomy approach was the most frequently used technique to gain access to the middle ear and the cochlea. Since 2000, several authors have routinely used a non-mastoidectomy nonposterior tympanotomy technique, which has undergone several modifications. Alternative surgical techniques for cochlear implantation have recently been introduced, such as endomeatal-alone or suprameatal-alone and combined posterior tympanotomy/endomeatal approaches. The goal of this study was to describe another modification of this l

OBJECTIVE: Mastoiditis, subperiosteal abscess and sigmoid vein thrombosis are the most common suppurative complications of acute otitis media (AOM). Luc's abscess, a subperiosteal temporal collection, is an infrequent complication with a particularly benign course.
PATIENTS: Two children, aged 5 years, presented with AOM complicated by an atypical abscess deep to the temporalis muscle, with no evidence for mastoid or zygomatic arch involvement.
INTERVENTION(S): Computed tomographic scan was performed in only 1 child. In both children, treatment included antibiotic therapy, grommet insertion,

Active chronic otitis media affects 0.5 per cent of adults and has two main variants. The first is when there is a squamous epithelial retraction pocket or cholesteatoma. The second variant is when the disease is primarily of the mucosa of the middle ear and mastoid air-cell system. Classically a cholesteatoma is considered 'unsafe' because of the risk of complications, particularly intracranial infection. Mucosal disease, on the other hand, is considered 'safe' because complications are thought to be rare. Surgery in the form of a modified radical mastoidectomy is considered to make active ch

Acute mastoiditis in the newborn is a very rare disease. Herein we report a case of a 28-day-old child with right aural atresia and ipsilateral mastoiditis requiring mastoidectomy. To our knowledge, this is the youngest case reported in the literature. Issues on diagnosis and management of mastoiditis in cases of aural atresia are further discussed. Based on our experience and on previous reported cases we conclude that mastoiditis is difficult to diagnose in a child with aural atresia. Moreover, mastoidectomy may be necessary, although identification of the facial nerve and consequent treatme

OBJECTIVE: Acute mastoiditis (AM) is a serious complication of acute otitis media. While historically managed with mastoidectomy, recent trends support conservative treatment, including intravenous (IV) antibiotics and pressure equalization tube (PET) placement. International studies demonstrate high success with these approaches, but U.S. pediatric data remains limited.
METHODS: Pediatric patients diagnosed with AM identified via Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) coding and International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) between January 2010 and October 2021 were reviewed using PearlDi

INTRODUCTION: Acute mastoiditis remains the most common complication of acute otitis media. It may rarely appear also in cochlear implant patients. However, the treatment recommendations for this disease are not precisely defined or employed, and in the current literature the differences regarding both the diagnosis and management are relatively substantial.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine a standard and safe procedure to be applied in case of pediatric acute mastoiditis.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 73 patients with 83 episodes of acute mastoiditis hospitalized

There is no single surgical treatment of choice for aural cholesteatoma. The extent of the cholesteatoma, the amount of preoperative destruction, and the size of the mastoid pneumatization should guide the surgeon in choosing the type of operation for a particular ear--which may range from a simple extraction of the cholesteatoma (delivery) all the way to a radical mastoidectomy. It is the clinical acumen that will determine the type of surgery for a given cholesteatomatous ear, algorithms being of little use in the complex situation of a pathological condition with infinite variables. However

Mastoiditis (M) is the most common intratemporal complication of otitis media. The incidence of M has decreased since the advent of antimicrobial agents. In the last decade, however, there has been a marked increased in the incidence of acute M in several communities, sometimes in association with the growing resistance of pneumococci. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Haemophillus influenzae are the most common organisms recovered in acute M. Several recent studies demonstrated the predominance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in this infection. However, bec

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Antimicrobial prophylaxis is still a matter of debate in ear surgeries. Previous studies have focused on prophylaxis in middle ear surgery alone without inclusion of mastoidectomy. We therefore investigated efficacy of two regimes of antimicrobial prophylaxis in tympanoplasty with cortical mastoidectomy done for mild middle ear disease in chronic otitis media.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind study.
METHODS: Patients undergoing tympanoplasty with cortical mastoidectomy were included and randomized into two study groups. The group I patien

Hearing rehabilitation after bilateral radical mastoidectomy has different options. The Bonebridge is a new type of middle ear implant bone conduction. It leaves the external ear canal opened and offers acoustic and aesthetic advantages that make it a new alternative of choice. We report our first case of Bonebridge implanted on a 17 years old patient. He had bilateral conductive hearing loss secondary to a bilateral radical mastoidectomy with open technique and meatoplasty for a bilateral cholesteatoma. The surgical technique is described. After 8 months of use the hearing gain is stable with

Bleeding during mastoidectomy usually occurs because of injury to the dura mater and/or sigmoid sinus, which, in most cases, can be controlled easily. The other important cause is damage to the internal carotid artery during its course in the middle ear. Bleeding from the external carotid artery or a branch of it is very rare and unknown. We hereby report an extremely rare and first case of delayed torrential bleeding after modified radical mastoidectomy, which was because of infective necrosis and subsequent blowout of the anterior tympanic branch of superficial temporal artery and its manage

Two hundred twenty-four ears with attic cholesteatomas, subjected to one-stage surgery between 1965 and 1978, were reevaluated several times, most recently in 1980/81 at a median observation time of 8 years (range, 3 to 16 years) and in 1985/86 at a median observation time of 11 years (range, 3 to 21 years). The recurrence rate was related to length of observation time. Up to and including the follow-up examination in 1980, the rate of residual cholesteatoma in the tympanic cavity was 1.3% and 0.9% in the attic. The incidence of recurrent cholesteatoma in the attic or the cavity was 1.8%. The

BACKGROUND: Hearing can be induced not only by airborne sounds (air conduction [AC]) and by the induction of skull vibrations by a bone vibrator (osseous bone conduction [BC]), but also by inducing vibrations of the soft tissues of the head, neck, and thorax. This hearing mode is called soft tissue conduction (STC) or nonosseous BC.
PURPOSE: This study was designed to gain insight into the mechanism of STC auditory stimulation.
RESEARCH DESIGN: Fluid was applied to the external auditory canal in normal participants and to the mastoidectomy common cavity in post-radical mastoidectomy patients
