Maternal and Perinatal Morbidity and Mortality Associated With Anemia in Pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of anemia in pregnancy and compare the maternal and perinatal outcomes of women with and without anemia. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study on all pregnant women in British Columbia who had a live birth or stillbirth at or after 20 weeks of gestation between 2004 and 2016. Women were diagnosed with anemia based on two criteria: third-trimester hemoglobin value or a delivery admission diagnosis of anemia (made before delivery). Anemia was categorized into no anemia (hemoglobin 11 g/dL or greater), mild (9-10.9 g/dL), moderat

The register data comprised 962 405 singleton live and stillbirths, 898 333 (93.3%) pregnancies in mothers with neither confirmed asthma nor use of asthma medication (controls), and 26 67

Exploration and innovation in addressing maternal, infant and neonatal mortality.

The Government of Nepal has been remarkably progressive in introducing innovative community-based maternal newborn and child health interventions in an effort to address the major causes of maternal and child mortality in the country. This article describes the introduction of innovative interventions, including a review of the landmark research that precipitated the discussion and provided evidence of practical feasibility, the acceptance of the intervention concept and validity, the approval process and the introduction and results from the pilot interventions. These interventions, which inc

The role of unorthodox and traditional birth care in maternal mortality.

Many pregnant women see unorthodox medical providers in labour before presentation to the modern medical facilities after obstetric complications have arisen. This study evaluates the contribution of unorthodox medical facilities to the delays subsisting maternal mortality in a rural, poor and illiterate community. Data was collected prospectively on all referrals from outside the St. Vincent's hospital, over a three-year period. Seven hundred and fifty women were referred to the hospital and there were a total of thirty maternal deaths out of the 1268 live births, giving a maternal mortality

Maternal mortality in a Nigerian teaching hospital - a continuing tragedy.

The aim of this review is to determine the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in a Nigerian tertiary health institution (University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Nigeria). The review was done through a retrospective analysis of maternal mortality records. The MMR for the 6-year period (1997-2002) was 825 per 100,000 live births. The common causes of maternal mortality included severe pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, 30 (27.8%); haemorrhage, 22 (20.4%) and complications of unsafe abortion 16 (14.8%). Grandmultiparous and patients aged 40 years and above were at the highest risk. This hospital-based

Eisenmenger's syndrome in pregnancy: maternal and fetal mortality in the 1990s.

To determine maternal and fetal mortality associated with Eisenmenger's syndrome in the UK, a postal questionnaire was sent to 225 NHS obstetric units with neonatal intensive care units, requesting information about maternal and fetal outcome in cases of Eisenmenger's Syndrome between 1991 and 1995. Fifteen cases were identified. The maternal mortality was 40% and fetal loss 8%. Only 15% of infants were born at term. Maternal mortality associated with Eisenmenger's syndrome remains as high as it has been for the past 50 years. Pooling of national data on rare medical conditions in pregnancy is

The sisterhood method of estimating maternal mortality: the Matlab experience.

This study reports the results of a test of validation of the sisterhood method of measuring the level of maternal mortality using data from a Demographic Surveillance System (DSS) operating since 1966 in Matlab, Bangladesh. The records of maternal deaths that occurred during 1976-90 in the Matlab DSS area were used. One of the deceased woman's surviving brothers or sisters, aged 15 or older and born to the same mother, was asked if the deceased sister had died of maternity-related causes. Of the 384 maternal deaths for which siblings were interviewed, 305 deaths were correctly reported, 16 de

The risk approach for reducing maternal mortality: the Yaounde experience.

A review of the strategy of the risk approach to maternal care in the obstetrics and gynecology services of CUSS over a 12-year period has been reported. By combining antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum family planning components and by a rational deployment of personnel and restricted resources, the maternal mortality ratio was decreased by up to 60% in one unit and maintained at 0-0.84 per 1000 in the other unit. The package is proposed as a prototype for Africa and the developing world.
