BACKGROUND: Congenital scoliosis is frequently associated with anomalies in multiple organ systems. However, the prevalence and distribution of associated anomalies remain unclear, and there is a large amount of variation in data among different studies.
METHODS: Six hundred and thirty-six Chinese patients who had undergone scoliosis correction surgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2012 to July 2019 were recruited, as a part of the Deciphering disorders Involving Scoliosis and COmorbidities (DISCO) study. The medical data for each subject were collected and analyzed.

BACKGROUND: Large maxillofacial venous malformation (VM) lesions can affect the craniofacial skeleton, causing occlusal and craniofacial deformity. Few studies have discussed the management of these skeletal disorders. It is unclear whether orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery are necessary after such a VM lesion has been significantly reduced.
METHODS: A 13-year-old boy with a large, extensive maxillofacial VM lesion, severe facial asymmetry, macroglossia, and lower lip hypertrophy visited our department in 2010. He received more than 100 sclerotherapy treatments and 20 laser treat

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a congenital disorder characterized by triad of vascular nevi, venous varicosities and hyperplasia of soft and hard tissues in the affected area. This syndrome usually affects the extremities but occasionally can manifest in the craniofacial region, including the oral cavity. We report a case of KTS and discuss the oro-surgical and dental considerations regarding hemorrhagic tendencies caused by the known local anomalies such as vascular malformations associated with this syndrome as well as systemic abnormalities.

Dento-facial injuries that occur prior to the eruption of teeth in the primary dentition are rare, but can result in damage to the primary dentition. We report a rare case where an injury to the anterior maxilla and mandible of an infant prior to primary tooth eruption resulted in hypoplasia, displacement and impaction of the primary dentition and damage to a developing permanent tooth.

We report an unusual case of ophthalmoplegia after maxillofacial surgery. A thirteen year old girl with unilateral left cleft lip and palate underwent maxillary advancement by distraction osteogenesis. Postoperatively she developed diplopia. The diplopia was not due to orbital lesions, most often seen after maxillofacial surgery, but to a haemorrhage posterior to the cavernous sinus.

The primary characteristics of long face patients are gummy smile and/or anterior open bite. Consequently, correction of esthetic and functional problems are especially important for long face patients. Since orthodontic therapy alone is not sufficient to solve the problem, orthognathic surgical approach is indicated for these patients. In this report, orthognathic surgical therapy of a severe long face patient with similar findings was presented. Following clinical and cephalometric examination and preoperative orthodontic therapy, a Le Fort I osteotomy, a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy,

INTRODUCTION: Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is characterized by the sudden death of an apparently otherwise healthy infant, typically during sleep, and with no obvious case after a thorough post-mortem and scene death examination.
OBJECTIVE: To address the problem from the otolaryngologist's perspective, describe relevant pathologies, discuss controversies and suggest preventive measures in high-risk populations.
METHODOLOGY: A MEDLINE search and hand search were conducted to identify reports published between 1969 and 2011 in the English language on the pathophysiology of SIDS related

BACKGROUND: Oblique facial clefts are congenital craniofacial malformations affecting the paramedian line of facial structures. Correction of these defects involves bone and soft tissue reconstruction. The authors have developed a computer-aided sequential surgical procedure for oblique facial clefts, including mandibular outer cortex autografting, medial canthal ligament reduction and fixation, and fat autografting.
METHODS: From 2004 to 2013, 12 patients (9 women, 3 men) with oblique facial clefts were treated with the 3-step procedure in our clinic. Mean patient age at the first surgery wa

Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) is a rare, multisystemic congenital disease with estimated frequency of 1/26370 births in Europe. Most cases are sporadic and caused by unilateral abnormal morphogenesis of the first and second pharyngeal arches. The aim of this study is to define the types and frequency of maxillofacial and systemic malformations in HFM patients. This is a case series study of patients with HFM evaluated at a single institution. Data were acquired through history, physical examination, photographs, diagnostic radiology, and laboratory and analyzed by the FileMakerPro database on 95

Tertiary hyperparathyroidism (THPT) is a severe complication of uncontrolled secondary hyperparathyroidism, typically associated with advanced-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD). We present the case of a Honduran patient with a long-standing history of CKD secondary to severe preeclampsia, who developed THPT following the discontinuation of her treatment due to financial constraints and the COVID-19 pandemic. The patient exhibited severe maxillofacial deformities, functional limitations, and widespread skeletal abnormalities. Despite initial management with medications such as paricalcitol and

Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) presents a complex congenital anomaly characterized by the asymmetric underdevelopment of facial structures, predominantly affecting the ear, mouth, and mandible on one side of the face. This case study examines the intricacies of HFM through the presentation of a 23-year-old female with congenital deformities of the left ear and mandibular hypoplasia. Clinical and radiological evaluations revealed significant facial malformations, including mandibular hypoplasia, left temporomandibular joint fusion, and maxillary abnormalities, confirming the diagnosis of HFM. Pycnodysostosis is a rare sclerosing bone dystrophy. The main clinical features are short stature and oral and maxillofacial abnormalities such as a large head, a small and underdeveloped face with prominent nose and eyes, irregular dentition, small hands and feet with dystrophic nails, and trunk deformities such as scoliosis. The differential diagnosis is established with other skeletal dysplasias such as osteopetrosis, cleidocranial dysplasia, and idiopathic acro-osteolysis. Since its first description in 1962 by Maroteaux and Lamy, about 100 cases have been published, some of these with unc…

Pycnodysostosis is a rare clinical entity, first described in 1962 by Maroteaux and Lamy. It is a genetic disorder, usually diagnosed at an early age. However, the diagnosis is sometimes late, made as a result of bone fracture, given the severe bone fragility resulting from increased bone density. Oral and maxillofacial manifestations of this disease are very clear. The head is usually large, the nose beaked, the mandibular angle obtuse, and both maxilla and mandible hypoplastic. Dental abnormalities and impaction are observed, as well as alterations in eruption and frequent dental crowding. T
