Airway management in patients with maxillofacial trauma - A retrospective study of 177 cases.

BACKGROUND: Airway management in maxillofacial injuries presents with a unique set of problems. Compromised airway is still a challenge to the anesthesiologist in spite of all modalities available. Maxillofacial injuries are the result of high-velocity trauma arising from road traffic accidents, sport injuries, falls and gunshot wounds. Any flaw in airway management may lead to grave morbidity and mortality in prehospital or hospital settings and as well as for reconstruction of fractures subsequently. METHODS: One hundred and seventy-seven patients of maxillofacial injuries, operated over a …

Pattern and treatment of facial trauma in pediatric and adolescent patients.

Pediatric maxillofacial trauma is a challenge for surgeons. There are no completely defined protocols, and sometimes, the initial management could be complex. The aim of this research was to perform a retrospective study to analyze the pattern and treatment of maxillofacial fractures in pediatric and adolescent patients. We reviewed the clinical records of 2986 patients treated at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Division of Piracicaba Dental School between 1999 and 2008. Seven hundred fifty-seven patients were younger than 18 years and were divided into 3 groups according to age; the age an

Radiology of maxillofacial trauma.

There has been a rising incidence of maxillofacial injuries during the past decade as a result of an increasing number of assaults and motor vehicle accidents. The maxillofacial region is one of the most complex areas of the human body, and the radiographic imaging of this region becomes even more difficult in traumatized patients because of their clinical condition and their inability to cooperate. Imaging modalities used in the evaluation of the traumatized maxillofacial region include conventional (plain) films, tomography, panoramic radiography, computed tomography, three-dimensional compu…

Pulse granuloma as a complication following dental trauma in children.

Contamination and subsequent retention of foreign bodies within wound surfaces may negatively influence healing following maxillofacial injuries. Larger foreign bodies that produce embedded or impalement injuries of soft tissues are easily detected. However, smaller contaminants, such as sand, gravel, food particles, wood splinters, and glass fibers, may not be easily identified in the initial examination, and their remnants may remain within the injury site even after debridement. Tissue reactions depend on the host response, type of foreign body, and nature of the wound surface. The purposes…

A tactfully designed photothermal agent collaborating with ascorbic acid for boosting maxillofacial wound healing.

Maxillofacial injuries that may cause severe functional and aesthetic damage require effective and immediate management due to continuous exposure to diverse microbial populations. Moreover, drug resistance, biofilm formation, and oxidative stress significantly impede timely bacterial removal and immune function, making the exploration of advanced materials for maxillofacial wound healing an appealing yet highly challenging task. Herein, a near-infrared photothermal sterilization agent was designed, encapsulated with liposomes and coated with ascorbic acid known for its antioxidant and immune-…
