Changes in the burden and underlying causes of heart failure in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, 1990-2019: An analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

BACKGROUND: The burden of heart failure (HF) is high globally, but information on its burden in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) is limited. This study provides a systematic analysis of the burden and underlying causes of HF in the EMR, including at the country level, between 1990 and 2019. METHODS: We used the 2019 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data for estimates of prevalence, years lived with disability (YLDs), and underlying causes of HF in the EMR. Age-standardised prevalence, YLDs, and underlying causes of HF were compared by 5-year age groups (considering 15 years old and more),…

Implementation of the One Health approach to fight arbovirus infections in the Mediterranean and Black Sea Region: Assessing integrated surveillance in Serbia, Tunisia and Georgia.

BACKGROUND: In the Mediterranean and Black Sea Region, arbovirus infections are emerging infectious diseases. Their surveillance can benefit from one health inter-sectoral collaboration; however, no standardized methodology exists to study One Health surveillance. METHODS: We designed a situation analysis study to document how integration of laboratory/clinical human, animal and entomological surveillance of arboviruses was being implemented in the Region. We applied a framework designed to assess three levels of integration: policy/institutional, data collection/data analysis and disseminati

Estimated incidence, prevalence, mortality, and registration of childhood cancer (ages 0-14 years) in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean region: an analysis of GLOBOCAN 2020 data.

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence about childhood cancer burden in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR). We aimed to provide an estimate of childhood cancer burden in the EMR, examine the connection between age-standardised mortality rate and level of income (gross domestic product [GDP] per capita), and reflect on the current status of childhood cancer registration in the EMR. METHODS: Using the GLOBOCAN 2020 data from the Cancer Surveillance Unit of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, we extracted data for childhood cancer (at ages 0-14 years) incidence, prevalence, an…

Associations of free, bioavailable and total 25-hydroxyvitamin D with neonatal birth anthropometry and calcium homoeostasis in mother-child pairs in a sunny Mediterranean region.

Sufficient vitamin D status is crucial for successful pregnancy and fetal development. The assessment of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations is commonly used to evaluate vitamin D status. Our objective was to examine the interrelated biodynamics of maternal and neonatal total, free and bioavailable 25(OH)D in maternal-neonatal dyads at birth and their associations with homeostasis and neonatal birth anthropometry. We analysed a cohort of seventy full-term mother-child pairs. We found positive associations between all neonatal measures of vitamin D status. Maternal forms exhibited a si

MEFV variant spectrum and exploratory in silico stratification of uncommon variants in 611 individuals tested for suspected familial Mediterranean fever in the Eastern Black Sea region of Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is the most common monogenic autoinflammatory disease, caused by variants in the MEFV gene. Regional MEFV variant spectra differ across Türkiye. We characterised the MEFV variant spectrum in a single-centre series of individuals tested for suspected FMF in the Eastern Black Sea region and explored in silico stratification of uncommon variants. No standardised clinical diagnostic criteria were applied; the study is therefore framed as a molecular variant-spectrum study. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed MEFV next-generation sequencing (NGS) rep

Toxic Release Damage Distance Assessment Based on the Short-Cut Method: A Case Study for the Transport of Chlorine and Hydrochloric Acid in Densely Urbanized Areas in the Mediterranean Region.

The transportation of dangerous goods by road is the most accident-prone mode of transportation, even if accidents involving road transportation of dangerous goods are considered as a Low Probability and High Consequence event (LPHC event). However, several dangerous goods are transported by road networks, such as petroleum products and chemicals, which can generate major dangerous consequences such as spills, explosions, fires, or toxic clouds. In this context, this article presents a method to calculate and quickly quantify the sizes of impact zones characterized by high lethality and irreve

Indigenous Plasmodium vivax upsurge in the Eastern Mediterranean, Western Pacific, and South East Asia regions - beyond the constant culpability of climate change, COVID-19, and armed conflicts.

Controlling Plasmodium vivax presents greater challenges compared to Plasmodium falciparum. Here, we analyzed epidemiological data on indigenous P. vivax cases from the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and Western Pacific regions in recent years. Significant upsurges are observed in more than half of the countries within these regions. In Papua New Guinea and Yemen, the increase has been consistent since 2015, while others, including Indonesia and Pakistan, have experienced sharp rises between 2020 and 2023 (e.g., +100 % and +83.4 %). Notably, in countries like Thailand, initially target

Atmospheric mercury speciation at the Monte Curcio GAW/GMOS high-altitude observatory: A multi-year (2015-2023) assessment of long-range transport and regional dynamics in the Central Mediterranean basin.

High-altitude stations provide unique insights into background chemistry, although decoupling long-range transport from local mountain dynamics remains challenging. This study presents a comprehensive, high-resolution, multi-year (2015-2023) record of TGM/GEM, GOM, and PBM at the Monte Curcio observatory. The station's strategic position is highly significant as it is located within the Mediterranean basin, a well-recognized climate and mercury hotspot, allowing for the observation of the free troposphere and regional boundary layer dynamics. Atmospheric transport and chemical dynamics were th

Investigating the Role of Functional Polymorphism of Maternal and Neonatal Vitamin D Binding Protein in the Context of 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Cutoffs as Determinants of Maternal-Neonatal Vitamin D Status Profiles in a Sunny Mediterranean Region.

Recent results indicate that dysregulation of vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP) could be involved in the development of hypovitaminosis D, and it comprises a risk factor for adverse fetal, maternal and neonatal outcomes. Until recently, there was a paucity of results regarding the effect of maternal and neonatal VDBP polymorphisms on vitamin D status during pregnancy in the Mediterranean region, with a high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D. We aimed to evaluate the combined effect of maternal and neonatal VDBP polymorphisms and different maternal and neonatal 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) cut-of…

A voluntary code of conduct for promoting adherence to the Mediterranean diet: rationale and propositions.

Throughout the Mediterranean region, adherence to the Mediterranean diet is decreasing especially among young people. The Mediterranean diet is the most studied dietary pattern with proven health benefits, especially regarding the prevention of non-communicable diseases at a time when their incidence is increasing worldwide. It has also been recognized as a sustainable diet model with multiple interdependent benefits on social, cultural, environmental, and economic dimensions. Faced with the challenge of promoting adherence to the Mediterranean diet, a Joint Med Diet Task Force of CIHEAM, FENS…

Fatty acid specific δ13C values reveal earliest Mediterranean cheese production 7,200 years ago.

The earliest evidence for cheese production in the Mediterranean is revealed by stable carbon isotope analyses of individual fatty acids in pottery residues from the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. Lipid residue data indicate the presence of milk in the earliest pottery, Impressed Ware, by 5700 cal. BCE (7700 BP). In contrast, by 5200 cal BCE (7200 BP), milk was common in refined Figulina pottery, meat was mostly associated with Danilo ware, cheese occurred in Rhyta, and sieves contained fermented dairy, representing strong links between specific function and stylistically distinctive pottery vess
