Performance-based assessment of social skills in a large sample of participants with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and healthy controls: Correlates of social competence and social appropriateness.

INTRODUCTION: Performance-based assessments of social skills have detected impairments in people with severe mental illness and are correlated with functional outcomes in people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The most common of these assessments, the Social Skills Performance Assessment (SSPA), has two communication scenarios and items measuring both social competence and appropriateness. As real-world competence and appropriateness appear to have different correlates, we hypothesized that SSPA Items measuring competence and appropriateness would be distinct and have different correl

Are We Witnessing a New Wave of Substance Use Disorders?: A Spotlight on Stimulant Use Disorders.

Stimulant use disorders are emerging as a serious global threat to health. Although research, clinical, and policy efforts have largely concentrated on opioid use disorders over the past decade, exponential rises in prevalence and overdose deaths attributable to stimulant use disorders warrant renewed attention. To date, no approved medications are available to treat stimulant use disorders; however, behavioral interventions have been effective and should be proactively promoted. Similarly, complementary and integrative therapies and harm reduction services have emerging evidence for effective

Therapist adherence and competence with manualized cognitive-behavioral therapy for PTSD delivered via videoconferencing technology.

Using secondary analyses from a randomized trial comparing the effectiveness of manualized cognitive-behavioral therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder, we compared ratings of therapist competency and adherence between two service delivery modes: telepsychiatry (TP) and same room (SR). Patients were 38 male treatment-seeking veterans recruited from a veterans affairs medical center. Domains of therapist competence and adherence included structuring sessions, implementing session activities, providing feedback, dealing with difficulties, developing rapport, and conveying empathy. Only one dif

Investing in Group Psychedelic Therapy for Latinx Immigrants.

Despite increasing interest in psychedelic-assisted therapies (PAT), there remains a critical gap in extending these treatments to marginalized and vulnerable populations, including Latinx immigrants. This underrepresentation in both research and clinical practice exacerbates disparities in mental health care access for racial and ethnic minorities, who already face systemic barriers. The Latinx population, despite experiencing mental health challenges at rates similar to their white counterparts, has lower treatment engagement due to factors like cultural stigma, language barriers, and limite

[Occupational rehabilitation of psychiatric patients in the Michaelshoven/Cologne vocational training center--an integrated overall concept].

Vocational retraining centres, sui generis, belong to those vocational rehabilitation facilities where disabled adults are afforded an opportunity for comprehensive occupational reorientation, facilities that operate on the principle of "dual training under one roof", i.e. combine practical and theoretical contents, which documents their close linkage with the mainstream vocational education system practiced in Germany. An essential modification has for some years now been introduced at the Michaelshoven/Cologne vocational retraining centre: the traditional conveyance of skills and knowledge (

Editorial: Cross-Cultural Assessment: Concepts, Methods, and Application.

Our field has increasingly recognized the importance of culture in the process of clinical care of children, youth, and their families. This includes accounting for the role of cultural and linguistic differences in clinical assessment. The AACAP Practice Parameter for Cultural Competence in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Practice recommends in Principle 4 that clinicians "should apply knowledge of cultural differences in developmental progression, idiomatic expressions of distress, or symptomatic presentation for different disorders to the clinical formulation and diagnosis."1(p1105) In the

Addressing Veterans' Mental Health in Community-Based Care.

United States Veterans are at an elevated risk for suicide despite the expansion of public outreach initiatives. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care centers may not be accessible to a large proportion of Veterans, but on the other hand, community-based physicians often do not feel they have tools to meet these patients' unique needs. This issue may be addressed via collaboration between VA and community-based providers to develop military cultural competence alongside increased education on the breadth of resources available to Veteran patients.

Innovative service redesign and resource reallocation: responding to political realities, mental health reform and community mental health needs.

General hospital mental health programs in large inner city communities face challenges in developing responsive services for populations facing high rates of serious mental illness, substance abuse, homelessness, and poverty. In addition provincial political pressures such as Mental Health Reform and hospital restructuring have caused general hospital mental health programs to reevaluate how services are delivered and resources are allocated. This paper describes how one inner city mental health service in a university teaching setting developed successful strategies to respond to these press

BACKGROUND: Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is the second most common autoimmune rheumatic disease, and the range of symptoms includes fatigue, dryness, sleep disturbances, and pain. Smartphone apps may help deliver a variety of cognitive and behavioral techniques to support self-management in SS. However, app-based interventions must be carefully designed to promote engagement and motivate behavior change. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore self-management approaches and challenges experienced by people living with SS and produce a corresponding set of design recommendations that inform the design of an

Finding peace of mind when there still is so much left undone-A diary study on how job stress, competence need satisfaction, and proactive work behavior contribute to work-related rumination during the weekend.

Unfinished work tasks have been identified as a significant job-related stressor in recent occupational stress research. Extending this research, we examine how and when not finishing one's tasks by the end of the work week affects work-related rumination at the weekend. Drawing on control theory, we examined competence need satisfaction as a mediating mechanism that links unfinished tasks at the end of the work week to work-related rumination at the weekend. Furthermore, we scrutinized whether proactive work behavior within the work week may neutralize the detrimental effects of unfinished ta

Understanding Pediatric Mental Health in Primary Care: Needs in a Rural State.

The need for mental health care for pediatric patients outstrips the supply, especially in states, like Kansas, that experience shortages of mental health professionals. Pediatric mental health care access programs, like KSKidsMAP (Kansas Kids Mental health Access Program), increase access to care by building competence and confidence in primary care physicians and clinicians (PCPs) through a statewide integrated system that includes a consultation line. This study is a secondary analysis of KSKidsMAP consultation Line inquiries regarding patients aged 0 to 21 years with mental and behavioral

[The issue of irresponsibility or mitigation of criminal responsibility].

In France, perpetrators of criminal offenses who have one or more mental or neuropsychiatric disorders at the time of the alleged offense may be found criminally irresponsible or have their criminal responsibility mitigated. In the first case, they are not tried in criminal court and are treated in a psychiatric facility. In the second case, they are tried and a reduction in sentence is applicable according to certain criteria. In order to inform the courts, pre-sentence psychiatric and psychological assessments are systematic in criminal cases.
