A man was taken ill suddenly while spraying nickel using a thermal arc process. He was relieved of his duties and sent home. His condition deteriorated and he was admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of pneumonia. Thirteen days after exposure he died. At post mortem examination the cause of death was determined to be shock lung or Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Reproduction of the conditions under which the man had operated the metal arc process produced nickel concentrations of 382.1 mg m-3 in the air next to the operator. Of this nickel, 64.6% was in the form of particles less

This paper reviews the recent development of the industrial processes in the construction, electronics and metal industries which are the predominant industries in developing countries. Common occupational irritants and allergens are presented. The information is essential for occupational dermatologists and physicians managing patients with occupational skin diseases. In the construction industry, the prefabrication construction methods are now widely used. The commonest irritant is cement and the allergens are chromate, rubber chemicals and epoxy resins. In the electronics industry, the comm

Nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr) and some of its compounds may be able to induce cancer in the lungs as well as in the nose and paranasal sinuses after occupational exposure. Latency periods amount to 20 years and more. Therefore objective exposure data are not available in the most cases and expert evaluation of the causal connection is often difficult. Recent investigations have shown, that Ni and Cr can cumulate in human lung tissue after occupational exposure. For the evaluation of "normal" Ni- and Cr-values a total of 495 human lung tissue samples of 30 occupationally non-exposed persons wer

If an occupational history enables the identification of subjects at high risk from occupational disease, it yields no information on the individual dust level on account of very important inter-individual variations in pulmonary dust retention. Magnetopneumography is the only technique which enables pulmonary dust loads to be estimated on living subjects. The first measures of dust load by magnetopneumography made at the Ambroise Pare Hospital are reported. By knowing the magnetic properties of occupationally inhaled aero-contaminants, this technique is sensitive and non-invasive and enables

This study aims to analyze the connection between mixed metal exposure and abnormal blood glucose (defined as fasting plasma glucose ≥6.1 mmol/L, according to the World Health Organization diagnostic criteria) among aluminum plant workers. A total of 384 male workers from a large aluminum plant in Shanxi Province were surveyed between July and August 2024. Fasting glucose and eight plasma metals were measured. Logistic regression, Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, and Bayesian kern

The Horne Smelter (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) is the only copper smelter in Canada and a major source of atmospheric emissions of toxic metals, including lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd). Biomonitoring studies have reported elevated exposure in nearby residents, yet limited data are available on the immediate residential environment. As part of a citizen-led initiative, residents collected indoor dust and snow to characterize indoor and outdoor residential metal contamination. Samples were collected from 23 residences and adjacent grounds located 540 to 2,080 m from the smelter. Cu, Pb, C

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To examine respiratory and skin diseases that occur among workers exposed to metalworking fluids (MWFs) used during machining processes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Five cases of a severe and previously unrecognized lung disease characterized by B-cell bronchiolitis and alveolar ductitis with emphysema (BADE) were identified among workers at a machining facility that used MWFs, although MWF exposure could not be confirmed as the etiology. In the United Kingdom, MWF is now the predominant cause of occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). Under continuous conditions associated wi

BACKGROUND: Metalworkers occupationally exposed to metals, tools, metalworking fluids (MWFs), technical oils, gloves, skin care products etc. frequently suffer from occupational dermatitis (OD).
OBJECTIVES: To investigate occupational exposure and to identify relevant occupational sensitizers in metalworkers with OD, and to evaluate suitability of current German patch test recommendations for this occupational group.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: As part of the OCCUDERM project, occupational exposure of 230 metalworkers with suspected OD patch tested in the departments of dermatology in Göttingen an

Archived soils contaminated with Ni, Cu, Co, and As from legacy operations of a nickel refinery at Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada were speciated using mineral liberation analysis. Four Ni minerals were identified as fingerprint compounds of the historical refinery emissions. Cu and Co were present in solid solution in these minerals due to their presence in the refinery's feed. The highest concentrations of Ni, Cu, Co, and As in these soils were 18,553, 1915, 196, and 79mg/kg, respectively, these elevated contaminant concentrations attesting to the importance of incidental soil ingestion to th

From 2000-2004 a monitoring study was conducted to evaluate the impacts of aluminum smelter-derived polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the health of fish in the marine waters of Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada. These waters are part of the historical fishing grounds of the Haisla First Nation, and since the 1950s the Alcan Primary Metal Company has operated an aluminum smelter at the head of the Kitimat Arm embayment. As a result, adjacent marine and estuarine sediments have been severely contaminated with a mixture of smelter-associated PAHs in the range of 10,000-100,000 ng/g dry w

Sandblasting is traditionally known as a high-risk profession for potential development of lung silicosis. Reported is a case of a sandblaster with confirmed accelerated silicosis, a condition rather rarely diagnosed in the Czech Republic. Initially, the patient presented with progressive dry cough and exertional dyspnoea. In the early diagnostic process, a possible occupational aetiology was considered given his occupational history and known high-risk exposure to respirable silica particles confirmed by industrial hygiene assessment at the patient's workplace. The condition was confirmed by

Anthropogenic emissions of toxic metals from smelters are a global problem. The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution of toxic metals in soils around a 60 year-old Pb/Zn smelter in a town in Yunnan Province of China. Topsoil and soil core samples were collected and analyzed to determine the concentrations of various forms of toxic metals. The results indicated that approximately 60 years of Pb/Zn smelting has led to significant contamination of the local soil by Zn, Pb, Cd, As, Sb, and Hg, which exhibited maximum concentrations of 8078, 2485, 75.4, 71.7, 25.3, and 2.58mgk

Hot-dip galvanization is a zinc-coating process to protect the metal items from corrosion. Zinc oxide nanoaerosol fume rising from hot metal bath surface in nano dimensions contains the greatest risk for workers in galvanization process. In the present study, it was evaluated whether inhalation of zinc causes any alteration in cellular immunity and tryptophan degradation by measuring neopterin, tryptophan, kynurenine, and zinc levels in 63 male galvanization workers and 23 male office personnel as controls. Serum and urinary zinc levels were found as 102.43 ± 4.74 and 0.66 ± 0.05 μg/dL in work
