Pattern of birth in anorexia nervosa. I: Early-onset cases in the United Kingdom.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies suggest that adults with anorexia nervosa are more likely to be born in spring and early summer. This study examines whether this pattern of birth is true of early-onset anorexia nervosa, and whether there is a relationship between environmental temperature at assumed time of conception and a later diagnosis of anorexia nervosa. METHOD: The population were children and adolescents with diagnoses of anorexia nervosa (N = 259) or "other eating disorders" (N = 149). Distribution of births across the year was compared between groups and relative to standard population

Effects of Air Pollution and Meteorological Conditions on DED: Associated Manifestations and Underlying Mechanisms.

This study aims to explore the associations and the underlying mechanism among dry eye disease (DED), air pollution, and meteorological conditions. DED is positively correlated with air pollutants (i.e., PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, CO, and SO2) and meteorological conditions (i.e., high altitude and wind speed), while negatively associated with relative humidity. Both low and high air temperatures effect DED. Atmospheric pollutants affect DED mainly through necroptosis or autophagy, inflammatory responses, and oxidative stress. Meteorological factors affect DED not only by their own affects but also

Boosted regression tree model-based assessment of the impacts of meteorological drivers of hand, foot and mouth disease in Guangdong, China.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common childhood infection and has become a major public health issue in China. Considerable research has focused on the role of meteorological factors in HFMD development. Nonlinear relationship, delayed effects and collinearity problems are key issues for achieving robust and accurate estimations in this kind of weather-health relationship explorations. The current study was designed to address these issues and assess the impact of meteorological factors on HFMD in Guangdong, China. METHODS: Case-based HFMD surveillance data and daily met

Meteorological influences on the seasonality of Lyme disease in the United States.

Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi infection) is the most common vector-transmitted disease in the United States. The majority of human Lyme disease (LD) cases occur in the summer months, but the timing of the peak occurrence varies geographically and from year to year. We calculated the beginning, peak, end, and duration of the main LD season in 12 highly endemic states from 1992 to 2007 and then examined the association between the timing of these seasonal variables and several meteorological variables. An earlier beginning to the LD season was positively associated with higher cumulative gr

A novel flushing strategy for diatom bloom prevention in the lower-middle Hanjiang River.

There are many concerns over the environmental consequences of river regulation in China, such as the Three Gorges Project and the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP). In this study, however, we attempted to find the positive role of these constructions in solving environmental problems. We explored the possibility for preventing downstream diatom blooms by using the water storage in the Danjiangkou Reservoir. And we developed a flushing strategy accessing the proper flushing time and water quantity to control the diatom growth. First, we set up a Generalized Additive Model (GAM) to

Climatic factors associated with epidemic dengue in Palembang, Indonesia: implications of short-term meteorological events on virus transmission.

An extensive outbreak of dengue fever and dengue hemorhagic fever occurred in the city of Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia from late 1997 through March/April 1998. All surveyed administrative areas (kelurahan) in Palembang were found to be 'permissive' for dengue virus transmission; and all areas that had Aedes (subgenus Stegomyia) larval mosquitoes in abundance experienced increased cases of DHF during the epidemic. The Aedes House Index (HI) for combined Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus was recorded every 3 months before, during, and after the epidemic. Ten surveyed sentinel sites (Octo

[The short-term effects of air pollution on mortality: the results of the EMECAM project in Castellón, 1991-95. Estudio Multicéntrico Español sobre la Relación entre la Contaminación Atmosférica y la Mortalidad].

BACKGROUND: In the last decade several studies have found out an association between air pollution and mortality in levels below the standards allowed by regulations. Castellón is a small city (134,000 inhabitants) with low air pollution levels. This work aims to identify if there is a short term relation between these both variables in this city. METHODS: We used mortality data and air pollution data (black smoke and sulphur dioxide), from 1.991 to 1.995, doing an ecological study using a time series analysis with the day as unit of the analysis. Poisson regression allow us to get the relati

Air pollution and daily mortality in residential areas of Beijing, China.

The relationship between air pollution and daily mortality in 1989 was examined in two residential areas in Beijing, China. Very high concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2) (mean = 102 micrograms/m3, maximum = 630 micrograms/m3) and total suspended particulates (TSPs) (mean = 375 micrograms/m3, maximum = 1,003 micrograms/m3) were observed in these areas. Daily counts of deaths were regressed, using Poisson regression on the logarithm of (SO2) and/or TSPs controlling for effects of temperature, humidity, and day of week. A highly significant association was found between In(SO2) and daily morta

Hypothermia among resort skiers: 19 cases from the Snowy Mountains.

Even in relatively temperate environments, accidental hypothermia is a potentially lethal complication of exposure. We have reviewed our experience of accidental hypothermia among recreational alpine skiers at an Australian resort during the 1983 and 1984 seasons. There were 19 cases of accidental hypothermia, which occurred in 10 men and nine women who were aged between six and 47 years (mean age, 15.9 years) and who had rectal temperatures that ranged from less than 35 degrees C to 36 degrees C. The temperature at presentation to the Ski Injury Clinic was less than 35 degrees C in seven case

Annual fluctuations in rheumatoid arthritis.

A literature survey revealed many reports implicating the microclimate and seasonal changes in arthritic diseases. Therefore, a retrospective study of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and the C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration of 2,802 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was performed. No statistically significant fluctuation was found when analyzed according to the month of the year in which blood was taken. The significance of this is discussed in relation to other RA symptoms, meteorologic phenomena, microclimate, and the joint circulatory responses in RA. The observations reported are co

Development of daily 1 km resolution estimation models for outdoor BTEX using random forest with land-use data and meteorological variables.

Artificial intelligence (AI) can facilitate the prediction and monitoring of air pollution. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) are harmful aromatic compounds that pose significant health risks. Conventional short-term and sparsely collected stationary monitoring data cannot fully capture the spatial and temporal variations of BTEX. Land use regression combined with machine learning has been shown to enhance the predictive capacity for outdoor BTEX, effectively addressing monitoring gaps. However, because of the scarcity of long-term BTEX measurements, only a few studies have emp

Exploring the spatiotemporal effects of meteorological factors on hand, foot and mouth disease: a multiscale geographically and temporally weighted regression study.

The influence of meteorological factors on hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is not on the same scale, it's rare for previous studies to measure and recognize the independent regression relationship between each variable in space and time scale. This study used a multiscale geographically and temporally weighted regression (MGTWR) model to explore the relationship between the incidence of HFMD and related meteorological factors in Shandong Province, China, during 2015-2019 and attempted to quantify the influence of meteorological factors on HFMD under different spatiotemporal effects.
