We previously found that caspofungin synergized with amphotericin B lipid complex in treating murine mucormycosis. We now report a similarly enhanced activity of liposomal amphotericin combined with micafungin or anidulafungin in mice with disseminated mucormycosis. The efficacy of combination echinocandin-polyene therapy for mucormycosis is a class effect.

This study evaluated combinations of amphotericin B with anidulafungin, caspofungin, and micafungin against 30 clinical isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans following the CLSI M27-A3 and the checkerboard microdilution method. Isolated cerebral mucormycosis is rare. We describe a patient with a brain tumor and a surgically-related Rhizopus oryzae brain abscess. Her abscess was effectively treated with posaconazole, micafungin and colony-stimulating factor followed by posaconazole alone. To our knowledge, cerebral mucormycosis secondary to brain surgery had not been previously reported.

Aureobasidium pullulans is an unusual agent of phaeohyphomycosis. The in vitro activities of antifungals against 104 isolates of Aureobasidium pullulans var. pullulans and A. pullulans var. melanigenum revealed low MIC90s of amphotericin B, posaconazole, and itraconazole.
