Adaptive restructuring of organohalide-respiring microbial communities under salinity stress maintains reductive dechlorination capacity.

Elevated salinity constrains microbial reductive dechlorination in groundwater contaminated with chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons, and stepwise salinity acclimation offers a strategy to sustain dechlorination activity. In this study, an organohalide-respiring enrichment consortium supplied with both 1,2-dichloroethane and trichloroethylene was subjected to stepwise salinity acclimation and subsequently evaluated through batch dechlorination assays and microbial community analyses. The acclimated consortium achieved complete dechlorination at 40 g/L NaCl after extended incubation, whereas con

Translating priority effects and niche engineering into rational microbiome therapeutics across the gut-lung axis.

The homeostasis of the human microbiome relies on "colonization resistance" governed by complex ecological rules. However, severe perturbati … ng optimal intervention windows to harness "priority effects"; and ultimately engrafting "synthetic microbial consortia" (SMCs) rationally designed upon metabolic cross-feeding principles. This strategy offers a promising avenue to durably shatter the dysbiotic deadlock and restore host immune homeostasis across the gut and systemic levels.

Beyond Tea: Kombucha SCOBY as a Starter Culture Across Food Matrices.

The kombucha symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) is a multispecies microbial consortium distributed between cell-containing fermentation liquid and a cellulose-rich pellicle. Here, "kombucha SCOBY" denotes the viable consortium delivered through either compartment or both compartments. Dominated by fermentative yeasts and acetic acid bacteria, the consortium produces ethanol and organic acids and biotransforms phenolic compounds, enabling fermentation beyond conventional sweetened teas. This review critically evaluates studies in which viable consortia directly fermented food matri

Pathogenesis versus symbiosis: a dual perspective on plant-microbe interactions.

Plants function as integral components of soil ecosystems, embedded within diverse microbial consortia that engage in continuous chemical and informational exchange. This molecular dialog governs how plants distinguish harmful, neutral, and beneficial microbes, transforming the rhizosphere into a dynamic signaling interface. Microbial interactions operate along a chemical continuum in which metabolites, volatiles, peptides, and other small molecules act across aqueous, lipidic, and chemically heterogeneous microenvironments to shape recognition and response. The physicochemical organization of…

Intratumoral microbiota remodeling of the tumor microenvironment impact solid tumor immunotherapy.

Tumor immunotherapy has significantly advanced in recent years. However, few patients with solid tumors respond to immunotherapy. The tumor microenvironment (TME) is a key factor in immunotherapy efficacy, and the intratumoral microbiota plays a significant role in remodeling the TME. Recent multiomic analyses revealed bacterial signatures in up to 76% of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cases, and specific microbial consortia were linked to therapeutic resistance. Microbiota-targeted therapies, such as engineered bacterial strains, increase tumor clearance rates by approximately 30% in…

Genomic insights into the metabolic complementarity of a synthetic marine consortium for hydrocarbon degradation in coastal sand microcosms.

Microbial consortia are essential for the degradation of complex hydrocarbon mixtures in coastal environments, yet the functional basis of consortium performance rarely resolved at strain level. In this study, we employed a Plackett-Burman experimental design to rationally assemble and optimize a synthetic consortium for the degradation of medium-grade crude oil in a sand-seawater microcosm. Six strains were selected: Stutzerimonas stutzeri CBC1 and CBC2, S. balearica GOM11, Pseudomonas sp. CBC3, Halomonas litopenaei GOM23 and Enterobacter kobei GOM24. After 45 days, the consortium removed 15.…

Metatranscriptomic analysis of lanthanum driven multi-element metabolic regulation in a rare earth tolerant microbial consortium.

The biological functions of rare earth elements (REEs) are gaining increasing attention, however, their systematic regulatory mechanisms regarding the metabolism and biogeochemical cycling of complex soil microbial communities remain unclear. In this study, a highly tolerant and stable microbial consortium (La-T18) was enriched and acclimated from REE-contaminated soil. Combining physiological assays and metatranscriptomics, we systematically analyzed the growth, metabolism, and gene expression responses of this consortium under varying concentrations of lanthanum (La) treatments. The results

Demonstration of adapted packed-bed bioreactor for accurate and rapid estimation of biochemical oxygen demand: insights into the influence of microbial community structure and functions.

This study demonstrated a novel approach to accurately estimate 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) in textile wastewater using a microbial consortium from food processing wastewater fixed on coconut fibers. Although glucose-glutamic acid (GGA) has been widely known as the most preferred substrates for microbial respiration, its calibration surprisingly resulted in an overestimation of BOD5 in textile wastewater due to its lower utilization rate compared to that of textile wastewater. After being adapted with a new nutrient environment composed of GGA and textile wastewater, the adapted pac

Polymicrobial consortia in the pathogenesis of biofilm vaginosis visualized by FISH. Historic review outlining the basic principles of the polymicrobial infection theory.

The manuscript disputes the exclusive mono-infectious way of thinking, which presumes that for every infection only one pathogen is responsible and sufficient, when infectious vectors, close contact and reduced immunity meet. In situations involving heavily colonized anatomical sites such an approach often ends in insoluble contradictions. Upon critical reflection and evaluation of 20 years research on spatial organization of vaginal microbiota it is apparent, that in some situations, pathogens may act and operate in permanent, structurally organized consortia, whereas its individual component
