Microwave Radiometry for the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Inflammatory Arthritis.

The ability of microwave radiometry (MWR) to detect with high accuracy in-depth temperature changes in human tissues is under investigation in various medical fields. The need for non-invasive, easily accessible imaging biomarkers for the diagnosis and monitoring of inflammatory arthritis provides the background for this application in order to detect the local temperature increase due to the inflammatory process by placing the appropriate MWR sensor on the skin over the joint. Indeed, a number of studies reviewed herein have reported interesting results, suggesting that MWR is useful for the

Squamous cell carcinoma in the renal pelvis of a horseshoe kidney.

We report a rare case of squamous cell carcinoma in the renal pelvis of a horseshoe kidney. An 80-year-old woman was referred to the National Nagano Hospital for the examination of occult blood in her urine. Microscopic hematuria was found, but pyuria was not seen. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass in the left renal pelvis of the horseshoe kidney. No renal stone or hydronephrosis was found. Cytopathological examination in the voided urine specimen was positive. Left nephroureterectomy with the splitting of the isthmus of the horseshoe kidney was performed without

Image-Guided Ablation Therapies for Extrahepatic Metastases from Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Review.

The most common sites of extrahepatic metastases from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are the lungs, intra-abdominal lymph nodes, bones, and adrenal glands, in that order. Although systemic therapies are a common treatment for patients with extrahepatic metastases, local ablative therapies for the extrahepatic metastatic lesions can be performed in selected patients. In this article, the literature on image-guided thermal ablation for metastasis to each organ was reviewed to summarize the current evidence. Radiofrequency ablation was the most commonly evaluated technique, and microwave ablation

Theoretical studies on the energy structures and optical properties of copper cysteamine - a novel sensitizer.

Copper cysteamine (Cu-Cy) is a new type of photosensitizer, which can be activated not only by ultraviolet light, but also by X-rays, microwaves and ultrasound to generate reactive oxygen species for treating cancer and infection diseases. Moreover, copper cysteamine has a strong luminescence, which can be used for both therapeutics and imaging. In addition, it can also be used for solid state lighting, radiation detection and sensing. However, its electronic structures, and particularly its excited states, are not yet clear. Here, we present a computational study aiming to determine the natur

Endoscopic ultrasound guided antitumor therapy.

This paper will review the possibilities of EUS guided anti-tumor therapy. Ablative energy may be delivered to a tumor under EUS guidance to destruct tumor cells by ultrasound itself, radiofrequency or radiation. Pilot results of endoscopic high intensity focused ultrasound in a human trial have been reported. The feasibility of performing EUS guided radiofrequency ablation has been reported in a swine model. An EUS bases radiation target simulation method has been developed for anal cancer therapy. Targeted delivery of an anti-cancer agent into a tumor under EUS guidance is possible as report

A novel 111indium-labeled dual carbonic anhydrase 9-targeted probe as a potential SPECT imaging radiotracer for detection of hypoxic colorectal cancer cells.

Tumor hypoxia is a common feature in colorectal cancer (CRC), and is associated with resistance to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Thus, a specifically targeted probe for the detection of hypoxic CRC cells is urgently needed. Carbonic anhydrase 9 (CA9) is considered to be a specific marker for hypoxic CRC diagnosis. Here, a nuclear imaging Indium-111 (111In)-labeled dual CA9-targeted probe was synthesized and evaluated for CA9 detection in in vitro, in vivo, and in human samples. The CA9-targeted peptide (CA9tp) and CA9 inhibitor acetazolamide (AAZ) were combined to form a dual CA9-targeted pro

Quantitative assessment of ablation zone accuracy in 3D stack-of-spirals proton resonance frequency shift thermometry during clinical hepatic microwave ablation.

INTRODUCTION: Real-time temperature feedback is critical for hepatic tumor ablation. Volumetric MR PRFS thermometry, including 3D stack-of-spirals sequences, shows promise; however, clinical validation for microwave ablation (MWA) is lacking. This study evaluated feasibility, spatial accuracy and susceptibility-related artifacts during hepatic MWA. METHODS: In 24 consecutively treated patients, 48 ablations targeting 34 hepatic lesions were included. After excluding 12 patients with overlapping ablations and one with severe artifacts, a retrospective analysis was conducted in 11 patients with

CT Hepatic Arteriography for Improved Detection and Ablation of Occult HCC Nodules: A Retrospective Analysis.

PURPOSE: Accurate preprocedural imaging is crucial for optimizing percutaneous thermal ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) thermal ablation. However, some nodules may remain undetected using conventional contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) and MRI (CEMRI), due to poor conspicuity. CT hepatic arteriography (CTHA) is an imaging technique that improves the detection of primary/secondary liver tumors. We aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of CTHA in detecting occult HCC nodules in cirrhotic patients undergoing percutaneous microwave ablation and to evaluate its impact on pretreatment planni

Development of Polymer-Encapsulated, Amine-Functionalized Zinc Ferrite Nanoparticles as MRI Contrast Agents.

The need for stable and well-defined magnetic nanoparticles is constantly increasing in biomedical applications; however, their preparation remains challenging. We used two different solvothermal methods (12 h reflux and a 4 min microwave, MW) to synthesize amine-functionalized zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4-NH2) superparamagnetic nanoparticles. The morphological features of the two ferrite samples were the same, but the average particle size was slightly larger in the case of MW activation: 47 ± 14 nm (Refl.) vs. 63 ± 20 nm (MW). Phase identification measurements confirmed the exclusive presence of zi

Green-emitting carbon dots from Protocatechuic acid and branched PEI: A multifunctional platform for bioimaging and gene delivery.

Carbon nanodots (CNDs) have emerged as promising candidates for bioimaging and gene delivery due to their excellent photostability, biocompatibility, and tunable optical properties. In this study, green-emitting CNDs were synthesized via a microwave-assisted method using protocatechuic acid (AP) and high molecular weight branched polyethyleneimine (bPEI25kDa) as precursors. The resulting AP-PEI25k CNDs exhibited uniform spherical morphology (average particle size of 9.2 nm), strong photoluminescence emission centered at 520 nm (greenish-yellow), high colloidal stability in solution, and positi

Experimental characterization of SiCH+via single-photon ionization of gas-phase SiCH.

SiCH and its cation have consistently emerged as predicted species in models of silicon chemistry within the interstellar medium, although they remain unobserved in space. Hindered by their intrinsic instability, no spectroscopic insights have been gleaned concerning the SiCH+ cation. In this study, we present experimental measurements on the SiCH+ cation through single-photon ionization spectroscopy of the SiCH radical within the 8.0-11.0 eV range. Gas-phase SiCH radicals were generated through chemical reactions involving CHx (x = 0-3) and SiHy (y = 0-3) within a microwave discharge flow-tub
