Headache syndromes and psychiatric disorders: association and familial transmission.

This paper examines the association between psychiatric disorders and headache syndromes in a longitudinal epidemiologic sample of young adults who were selected from the general population of Zurich, Switzerland. Headache syndromes were defined according to the newly introduced diagnostic criteria of the International Headache Society in 1988. The prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders, according to specific headache subtypes, were examined both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. In the cross-sectional data, migraine with aura was associated with hypomania, recurrent brief depression, a

Comorbid neuropathologies in migraine.

The identification of comorbid disorders in migraineurs is important since it may impose therapeutic challenges and limit treatment options. Moreover, the study of comorbidity might lead to improve our knowledge about causes and consequences of migraine. Comorbid neuropathologies in migraine may involve mood disorders (depression, mania, anxiety, panic attacks), epilepsy, essential tremor, stroke, and white matter abnormalities. Particularly, a complex bidirectional relation exists between migraine and stroke, including migraine as a risk factor for cerebral ischemia, migraine caused by cerebr

Major depression subtypes are differentially associated with migraine subtype, prevalence and severity.

OBJECTIVE: Migraine and major depressive disorder show a high rate of comorbidity, but little is known about the associations between the subtypes of major depressive disorder and migraine. In this cross-sectional study we aimed at investigating a) the lifetime associations between the atypical, melancholic, combined and unspecified subtype of major depressive disorder and migraine with and without aura and b) the associations between major depressive disorder and its subtypes and the severity of migraine. METHODS: A total of 446 subjects with migraine (migraine without aura: n = 294; migrain

Therapeutic role of melatonin in migraine prophylaxis: Is there a link between sleep and migraine?

Melatonin is a ubiquitously distributed molecule that possesses diverse functions. Melatonin plays a key role in the endogenous circadian rhythms of humans via light stimulation in the hypothalamus. In addition, melatonin has roles in the opioid system, the nitric oxide pathway, free radical scavenging, inflammation, and antinociception. Melatonin is nontoxic and relatively safe. Recently, exogenous melatonin has been shown to have significant effects in the treatment of migraine. Further, it has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of sleep disorders, including insomnia, circadian rhythm sl

Do pre-school episodic syndromes predict migraine in primary school children? A retrospective cohort study on health care data.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relative risk, predictive value and population attributable risk fraction of pre-school episodic syndromes for later migraine in primary school age children. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used health insurance data on 55,035 children born in 2006 with no diagnosis of migraine up to the age of 5 years. The relative risk, probability and population attributable risk fraction of migraine prompting a physician visit at the age of 6-10 years in children with episodic syndromes included in the International Classification of Headache Disorders (benign paroxysmal

The Development and Impact of Anxiety With Migraines: A Narrative Review.

Migraine is a chronic, disabling neurological disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of headache. Psychiatric disorders have been reported to arise due to a patient's physical and emotional stress caused by migraine episodes, with anxiety disorders being one of the most commonly associated psychiatric disorder with migraine. This association poses the question of similar or shared pathogenesis between the two disorders and raises a concern for the diagnosis and management of situations when these disorders present together. In this review, we discuss the possible shared mechanism for the

Migraine heritability and beyond: A scoping review of twin studies.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to summarize current knowledge from twin studies on migraine. Migraine heritability, genetic correlations with migraine comorbid disorders, and the use of discordant twin pairs in migraine research are described. Further, the review considers the unused potential of twin studies in migraine research and reflects on future directions. BACKGROUND: Twin studies can be used to understand how heritable and environmental factors influence human traits and disorders. The classical twin design compares the resemblance of a trait in monozygotic twins to that in diz

The childhood migraine syndrome.

Migraine is a complex genetic brain disorder with an intricate pathogenesis and polymorphous clinical presentations, particularly in children. In this Perspective, we describe the different phenotypes of migraine in children, including conditions that have been referred to in the International Classification of Headache Disorders as "syndromes that may be related to migraine''. Evidence is presented for the integration of abdominal migraine, cyclical vomiting syndrome, benign paroxysmal vertigo, benign paroxysmal torticollis and infantile colic into the unified diagnosis of 'childhood migraine

Headache comorbidity in epilepsy and functional/dissociative seizures: an exploratory cross-sectional study in a tertiary epilepsy center.

INTRODUCTION: Headache disorders are common in patients with epilepsy and functional/dissociative seizures (FDS) and may influence quality of life and clinical outcomes. Migraine has been proposed as a reciprocal risk factor for epileptic and functional seizures. We aimed to determine the prevalence of headache disorders and associated clinical factors in a cohort of patients undergoing video-EEG monitoring at a tertiary epilepsy center. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, clinical data from 164 adult inpatients evaluated in an epilepsy monitoring unit were analyzed. Headach

Psychiatric comorbidity of migraine.

Migraine affects nearly 12% of the adult population in the United States and causes significant lost productivity and decrements in health-related quality of life. The burden of migraine and the challenge in managing it are increased by the comorbid psychiatric conditions that occur in association with it. Studies in both clinical and community-based settings have demonstrated an association between migraine and a number of specific psychiatric disorders. This review will focus on the relationships between migraine and depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and bipolar disor

Comorbidity of migraine and epilepsy in a Norwegian community.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Studies on the comorbidity of migraine and epilepsy have shown conflicting results. We wanted to explore the epidemiological association between migraine and seizure disorders in a population-based material where case ascertainment was enhanced by individual specialist assessments. METHODS: Information concerning migraine and seizure disorders was collected from 1793 participants in an interview-based survey in a circumscribed community. Mixed headache, with features both of migraine without aura and tension-type headache, was excluded from further analyses because of

Gut-Brain Axis and Migraine: Rates of Improvement and Predictors of Response After a Low-FODMAP, Low-Starch and Low-Sucrose Dietary Intervention.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of diets on patients with migraine remain elusive. We aimed to determine rates of improvement and predictors of response of migraine after an intensive dietary intervention. METHODS: We performed a quasi-experimental pre-post study including patients with self-reported digestive functional disorders and migraine undertaking a social-media based program with a 2-week dietary intervention (low-FODMAP, low-starch and low- sucrose diet). Migraine improvement was defined as a decrease of at least 50% in intensity or frequency of headaches. Independent variables associated

Migraine and Its Equivalents: What Do They Share? A Narrative Review on Common Pathophysiological Patterns.

Migraine is the first in order of frequency of the neurological disorders, affecting both adult and paediatric populations. It is also the first cause of primary headaches in children. Migraine equivalents are periodic disorders that can be associated with migraine or considered as prognostic features of a future migraine manifestation. Despite the mechanisms underlying migraine and its equivalents are not entirely clear, several elements support the hypothesis of common pathophysiological patterns shared by these conditions. The aim of this review is thus to analyze the literature in order to

Psychiatric comorbidities of migraine.

Migraine is commonly comorbid with psychiatric conditions, particularly major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and sleep disorders. The presence of psychiatric disorders can make diagnosis and treatment more challenging. Existing studies suggest that the relationship between migraine and psychiatric disorders is bidirectional, such that each disorder confers increased risk for onset of the other. Mechanisms underlying this comorbidity are largely speculative but include serotonergic dysfunction, medication overuse, allostatic load, and behavioral factors such as pain-related appraisals

Eating attitudes of migraine patients in Turkey: a prospective multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a disease characterized by headache attacks. The disease is multifactorial in etiology and genetic and environmental factors play role in pathogenesis. Migraine can also be accompanied by psychiatric disorders like neurotism and obsessive compulsive disorder. Stress, hormonal changes and certain food intake can trigger attacks in migraine. Previous studies showed that eating attitudes and disorders are prevalant in patients with migraine. Eating disorders are psychiatric disorders related to abnormal eating habits. Both migraine and eating disorders are common in young

Migraine and motion sensitivity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article describes vestibular migraine and motion sensitivity. Migraine headache is often accompanied by dizziness or unsteadiness. A diagnosis of vestibular migraine requires that a patient meet International Headache Society criteria for migraine headache, have episodic or fluctuating symptoms highly suggestive of a balance disorder, have no recognized alternative neuro-otologic diagnosis, and experience migrainous symptoms during episodes of vertigo or imbalance. This article discusses these diagnostic criteria; the epidemiology of vestibular migraine; laboratory abno

Migraine Comorbidities.

Novel knowledge about the interrelationships and reciprocal effects of migraine and epilepsy, migraine and mood disorders, or migraine and irritable bowel syndrome has emerged in recent decades. Over time, comorbid pathologies associated with migraine that share common physiopathological mechanisms were studied. Among these studied pathologies is epilepsy, a disorder with common ion channel dysfunctions as well as dysfunctions in glutamatergic transmission. A high degree of neuronal excitement and ion channel abnormalities are associated with epilepsy and migraine and antiepileptic drugs are u

Metabolic Aspects of Migraine: Association With Obesity and Diabetes Mellitus.

Migraine is a disabling neurovascular disorder, characterized by moderate to severe unilateral headaches, nausea, photophobia, and/or phonophobia, with a higher prevalence in women than in men, which can drastically affect the quality of life of migraine patients. In addition, this chronic disorder is related with metabolic comorbidities associated with the patient's lifestyle, including obesity and diabetes mellitus (DM). Beyond the personal and socioeconomic impact caused by migraine, obesity and DM, it has been suggested that these metabolic disorders seem to be related to migraine since: (
