Transcriptomic responses in ham mite (Tyrophagus putrescentiae) to propylene glycol exposure.

Tyrophagus putrescentiae, commonly referred to as the ham or cheese mite, are tiny arachnid pests that infest dry-cured hams and aged cheeses. Previous studies have indicated that propylene glycol (PG) is a safe and effective treatment for control of ham mite infestations in laboratory-scale experiments. Mixed-sex mites were inoculated on ham cubes that were dipped in PG (n = 6), while untreated ham cubes served as the control (n = 6). After incubation for 72 h at 25 ± 2° C and 70 ± 5% RH, mites from each treatment group were pooled and RNA-seq was used to characterize mite transcriptomes and …

Diet optimization for rearing Transeius montdorensis predatory mites under laboratory conditions.

The predatory mite Transeius montdorensis (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is a biological control agent against a range of insect pests like thrips, whiteflies, broad mites and russet mites across protected crops. Optimizing diet for rearing T. montdorensis under laboratory conditions is crucial for improving their application in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. Here, we evaluated the development and reproduction of T. montdorensis when fed on four different diets, including cattail pollen (Typha latifolia), living dried fruit mites (Carpoglyphus lactis), frozen C. lactis eggs, and a mixed die

Prevalence and epizootical aspects of varroasis in golestan province, northern iran.

BACKGROUND: The Varroa destructor mite is considered as a major pest of honey bees Apis mellifera. The rapid spread of Varroa mites among bee colonies may be due to several factors, including drifting of infested bees, movement of bee swarms, and robbing of weakened colonies. Disease spread and predisposing the infested bees to other diseases lead to high economic losses in beekeeping industries. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of and evaluate some managing factors in Golestan Province in Iran in 2008. METHODS: According to the records of Agricultural Research Center, 80

Mange in Rabbits: An Ectoparasitic Disease with a Zoonotic Potential.

Mange in rabbits is a very important parasitic disease causing high losses. The disease is caused mainly by Sarcoptes scabiei, Psoroptes cuniculi, Cheyletiella parasitovorax, and Notoedres cati. Body mange and ear mange are the most common forms of this disease in rabbits. Animals can get mite infestation through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated fomites. This infestation is characterized by zoonotic nature and public health burden. The skin affection is characterized by pruritus, alopecia, severe cachexia, and sometimes death. Infestation is diagnosed mainly by skin scrapin

Transcriptome Analysis of Host Inflammatory Responses to the Ectoparasitic Mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis.

Scabies, a human skin infestation caused by the ectoparasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, affects more than 200 million people globally. The prevailing knowledge of the disease process and host immune response mechanisms is limited. A better understanding of the host-parasite relationship is essential for the identification of novel vaccine and drug targets. Here we aimed to interrogate the transcriptomic profiles of mite-infested human skin biopsies with clinical manifestations of ordinary scabies subjects ("OS"; n = 05) and subjects naive to scabies ("control"; n = 03) using RNASeq

Occurrence of Tegolophus brunneus and Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Acari: Eriophyidae) on the main citrus belt of Brazil and the differential toxicity of the acaricides to these species.

Many mites of the family Eriophyidae are important pests worldwide. In citrus crops, the eriophyid Phyllocoptruta oleivora stands out for the economic losses caused. The pest's injuries cause the darkening of leaves, twigs, and fruits, making them unfit for the fresh fruit market and affecting plant productivity. Another species that causes similar symptoms was described in Brazil recently, the brown citrus rust mite, Tegolophus brunneus. Although studies have not been performed with this species, growers and technicians have attributed the rise in rust damages in Brazil to T. brunneus, affirm

Health status of honey bee colonies (Apis mellifera) and disease-related risk factors for colony losses in Austria.

Austrian beekeepers frequently suffered severe colony losses during the last decade similar to trends all over Europe. This first surveillance study aimed to describe the health status of Austrian bee colonies and to analyze the reasons for losses for both the summer and winter season in Austria. In this study 189 apiaries all over Austria were selected using a stratified random sampling approach and inspected three times between July 2015 and spring 2016 by trained bee inspectors. The inspectors made interviews with the beekeepers about their beekeeping practice and the history of the involve

Laboratory Diagnosis of Scabies Using a Simple Saline Mount: A Clinical Microbiologist's Report.

Scabies is a skin condition caused by infestation of the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis is an arthropod member belonging to the order Acarina. Scabies is present throughout the world and is prevalent in all age groups, mostly involving people frequently in contact with animals, children, women, and elderly people. Predisposing factors for scabies include individuals with immunosuppressive conditions and people residing under low socioeconomic conditions. Skin lesions that occur during mite infestation closely resemble dermatological disorders caused by microbes, includi

Ecology of fear: environment-dependent parasite avoidance among ovipositing Drosophila.

Habitat avoidance is an anti-parasite behaviour exhibited by at-risk hosts that can minimize exposure to parasites. Because environments are often heterogeneous, host decision-making with regards to habitat use may be affected by the presence of parasites and habitat quality simultaneously. In this study we examine how the ovipositing behaviour of a cactiphilic fruit fly, Drosophila nigrospiracula, is affected by the presence of an ectoparasitic mite, Macrocheles subbadius, in conjunction with other environmental factors - specifically the presence or absence of conspecific eggs and host plant

Efficiency of plant-based acaricide gels compared to fluvalinate-impregnated strips for control of Varroa destructor in honey bee colonies.

The Varroa mite is one of the most important pests of honey bee colonies. This study compares the efficiency of thymol-based acaricides with the tau-fluvalinate-based commercial treatment to control this mite species. Two experiments were conducted: (1) in the Fall, thymol-based gel was compared with a widely used acaricide, fluvalinate-impregnated strips (Apistan®), and (2) in the Spring, gels containing thymol-only, thymol + menthol + eucalyptus essential oil, and thymol + thyme essential oil were compared with fluvalinate-impregnated strips. In the first experiment, both treatments reduced

Demodectic mange in threatened southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis).

BACKGROUND: Southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) rely on intact pelage for thermoregulation, and thus clinically significant demodicosis and associated alopecia can cause morbidity and death. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe lesions associated with follicular Demodex sp. infestation, estimate the prevalence and intensity of infestation, describe mite distribution across key anatomical regions, and assess mite presence or absence in relation to lesions and host risk factors. ANIMALS: Twenty necropsied, wild southern sea otters that stranded along the central Californ

Histamine release factor from Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer): characterization and in vitro assessment as a protective antigen.

A cDNA encoding a 174-amino-acid orthologue of a tick histamine release factor (HRF) was identified from the haematophagous poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae. The predicted D. gallinae HRF protein (Dg-HRF-1) sequence is highly conserved with the tick HRFs (identity 52-54%) and to a lesser degree with translationally controlled tumour proteins (TCTP) from mammals and other invertebrates (range 38-47%). Phylogenetically, Dg-HRF-1 partitions with the tick HRF clade suggesting a shared linage and potentially similar function(s). A recombinant Dg-HRF-1 protein (rDg-HRF-1) was produced and shown

Impact of Varroa destructor on honeybee (Apis mellifera scutellata) colony development in South Africa.

The devastating effects of Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman on European honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera L.) have been well documented. Not only do these mites cause physical damage to parasitised individuals when they feed on them, they also transmit viruses and other pathogens, weaken colonies and can ultimately cause their death. Nevertheless, not all honeybee colonies are doomed once Varroa mites become established. Some populations, such as the savannah honeybee, A. m. scutellata, have become tolerant after the introduction of the parasite and are able to withstand the presence of th

Density, location, and sampling of Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae) on experimentally infested pigs.

Forty-eight weaned pigs were inoculated with 0 (controls), 100 (low dose), and 1,000 (high dose) itch mites, Sarcoptes scabiei (De Geer), and allowed to develop infestations for up to 10 wk. Pigs were slaughtered in sequence during the experiment to sample hides and count mites through potassium hydroxide digestion. Incipient crusted lesions occurred in ears of 4 of 16 low-dose pigs and 7 of 16 high-dose pigs, averaged less than 3 cm2 in area, and contained 86% of all females and 87% of all other mite stages found on those pigs. Crusts aside, faces had the highest mite densities among six body

Syringophilid mites parasitising the crows and the competitive exclusion principle.

Quill mites of the family Syringophilidae (Acariformes: Prostigmata) are one of the most species-rich groups of mite ectoparasites permanently associated with birds, characterised by high host specificity and strict microhabitat preferences. In this study, we examined 179 individuals representing 19 species of the genus Corvus (Passeriformes: Corvidae) to investigate the prevalence and host associations of syringophilid mites. Quill mites were detected in 31 hosts from 11 host species, with infestations restricted exclusively to the wing coverts and involving two species: Syringophiloidus glan

Regular dorsal dimples and damaged mites of Varroa destructor in some Iranian honey bees (Apis mellifera).

The frequency of damaged Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman (Mesostigmata: Varroidae) found on the bottom board of hives of the honey bee, Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) has been used as an indicator of the degree of tolerance or resistance of honey bee colonies against mites. However, it is not clear that this measure is adequate. These injuries should be separated from regular dorsal dimples that have a developmental origin. To investigate damage to Varroa mites and regular dorsal dimples, 32 honey bee (A. mellifera) colonies were selected from four Iranian provinces: Isfahan, M
