The development of persistent pain and psychological morbidity after motor vehicle collision: integrating the potential role of stress response systems into a biopsychosocial model.

OBJECTIVES: Persistent pain and psychological sequelae are common after motor vehicle collision (MVC), but their etiology remains poorly understood. Such common sequelae include whiplash-associated disorders (WAD), fibromyalgia, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Increasing evidence suggests that these disorders share overlapping epidemiologic and clinical features. A model is proposed in which central neurobiological systems, including physiologic systems and neuroanatomical structures involved in the stress response, are an important substrate for the development of all 3 disorders an

Career Choice Motivation and Job Satisfaction Among Chinese Geriatric Social Workers: The Serial Mediation Model of Job Autonomy and Collective Psychological Ownership.

Using data from the China Social Work Longitudinal Study (N = 2,254), this study examined associations between career choice motivation and job satisfaction among Chinese geriatric social workers. Internal motivation was positively associated with job satisfaction, whereas external motivation was negatively associated with it. Job autonomy and collective psychological ownership independently mediated these associations and also formed a serial mediation pathway. These findings extend understanding of geriatric social workers' job satisfaction in a non-Western context and suggest that care orga

Effects of a nurse-led multi-theoretical-model-based exercise program on psychological, sleep and cognitive function in lymphoma patients: A randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Chemotherapy often leads to psychological distress, sleep disturbance, and cognitive decline in lymphoma patients. Exercise may help alleviate these symptoms, but high-quality evidence remains limited. The study aimed to examine the effects of a nurse-led multi-theoretical-model-based exercise program (MTM-EP) on psychological distress, sleep quality, and cognitive function in lymphoma patients undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: In this assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial, ninety patients with lymphoma were randomly assigned to either an intervention group receiving a 36-week

The relationship between alexithymia, emotion regulation, psychological resilience, and self-management behaviors in kidney transplant recipients: a multicenter structural equation modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Effective self-management behaviors can improve outcomes in kidney transplant recipients. Although existing evidence has shown that alexithymia is negatively associated with self-management behaviors, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the relationships among the alexithymia, emotion regulation, psychological resilience and self-management behaviors in kidney transplant recipients. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study recruited kidney transplant recipients who attended follow-up visits at three major tertiary hospitals in northern and

The impact of college students' physical exercise on subjective well-being: a chain-mediation model involving psychological resilience and social support with gender as the moderator.

Based on the background of Healthy China, this study took 494 college students as the subjects, collected data using the Physical Activity Rating Scale, Perceived Social Support Scale, Adolescent Resilience Scale, and Subjective Well-being Scale, and constructed a chained mediation model using SmartPLS software to explore the mechanism of physical exercise on subjective well-being and the moderating effect of gender. The study found that although physical exercise cannot directly predict subjective well-being, it indirectly enhances well-being through the chained mediation path of “social supp

Perceived fulfillment of multilevel psychological contract responsibilities, job burnout, and turnover intention among primary care physicians: a structural equation modeling analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Primary care physicians face substantial occupational mental health challenges, including job burnout and turnover intention. Psychological contract theory conceptualizes employment relationships in terms of perceived reciprocal obligations, while the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model provides a complementary framework for understanding how work-related conditions may be associated with burnout. This study examined the structural associations among perceived fulfillment of multilevel psychological contract responsibilities, job burnout dimensions, and turnover inten

Social Support and Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy in Breast Cancer: A Full Mediation Dual-Pathway Model Through Physical Activity and Psychological Distress.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a debilitating toxicity. While social support is protective, its precise mechanisms remain unclear. AIMS: To test whether social support influences CIPN symptoms through physical activity and psychological distress, and if mediation is full or partial. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 240 breast cancer patients was enrolled and assessed longitudinally at three time points: baseline, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks. Using structural equation modeling, a partial mediation model (with a direct social support-CIPN path) was compared to a ful

Designing, Implementing, and Evaluating an Adapted Stress First Aid and Psychological First Aid Model in a Hospital Setting: Results from a Multi-year Study.

Healthcare workers are exposed to many stressors including long hours, intense physical and emotional labor, and consistent exposure to suffering and death. Together these stressors can culminate into more chronic and severe stress responses when not appropriately addressed. To help mitigate the impact of these stressors, peer-administered post-event psychosocial support programs have been developed, such as Psychological First Aid and Stress First Aid. Unfortunately, few resources exist to help those interested in designing, implementing, and evaluating such a program within their organizatio

Translating peripheral blood biomarkers into Alzheimer's disease care: an exploratory dual-pathway model of immune and viral dynamics in behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) critically complicate Alzheimer's disease care, yet the precise biological correlates for highly heterogeneous symptom domains remain largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate an exploratory "dual-pathway framework" to map how macroscopic immunosenescence and elevated latent viral antibody titers parallelly correlate with distinct neurobehavioral phenotypes. METHODS: We evaluated 103 older adults diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (n = 40) or probable Alzheimer's disease (n = 63). The severity and frequency of beh

Relationship between ear appearance and psychological function among congenital unilateral microtia after autologous cartilage ear reconstruction: a chain mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Congenital microtia significantly impacts children's psychological health, yet there has been limited focus on the effect of ear reconstruction surgery on psychological improvements, especially its pathway. This study aims to explore the role of ear appearance in improving psychological health in individuals with congenital unilateral microtia based on social identity theory, highlighting the limited understanding of the specific pathways involved in this relationship, and investigating how social function and benefit mediate the connection between ear appearance and psychological

Leveraging individual differences in cue-reward learning to investigate the psychological and neural basis of shared psychiatric symptomatology: The sign-tracker/goal-tracker model.

In our modern environment, we are bombarded with stimuli or cues that exert significant influence over our actions. The extent to which such cues attain control over or disrupt goal-directed behavior is dependent on several factors, including one's inherent tendencies. Using a rodent model, we have shown that individuals vary in the value they place on stimuli associated with reward. Some individuals, termed "goal-trackers," primarily attribute predictive value to reward cues, whereas others, termed "sign-trackers," attribute predictive and incentive value. Thus, for sign-trackers, the reward

Problem Gambling and Suicidal Behaviours in Young Adult men in Ghana: A Moderated Mediation Model of Psychological Distress and Social Support : Journal of Gambling Studies.

Problem gambling has been recognised as an important public health issue because of its harmful consequences at the personal, interpersonal, and societal levels. There is a proliferation of gambling activities in Ghana owing to increased access to the internet, soaring smartphone penetration, and an influx of sports betting companies. Yet, very little research has addressed the harm associated with problem gambling in Ghana. This study assessed if the effect of problem gambling severity on suicidal behaviours (ideation, planning, and attempts) through psychological distress is contingent on th

Psychological and sociocultural influences on body image among midlife women with and without a history of breast cancer: Testing the Tripartite Influence Model of Body Image.

Body image concerns are common among breast cancer survivors and women in midlife. However, effective interventions are lacking for breast cancer survivors. This may be related to prior research having examined non-modifiable and medicalised influences on body image, instead of modifiable sociocultural and psychological influences. An adaptation of the 'Tripartite Influence Model of Body Image' was tested among women with (n = 169; mean age = 49.9) and without (n = 323; mean age = 47.6) a history of breast cancer, to investigate whether psychological and sociocultural influences on body image

Interpersonal and intrapersonal manifestations of HIV stigma and their impacts on psychological distress and life satisfaction among people living with HIV: Toward a dual-process model.

PURPOSE: As HIV is one of the most stigmatizing health conditions, people living with HIV (PLHIV) continue to experience multiple forms and sources of stigmatization, which negatively impact their quality of life. The present study proposed a dual-process model to understand the different manifestations of HIV stigma and examine how they relate to each other and affect psychological distress and life satisfaction in PLHIV. METHODS: Two hundred and ninety-one PLHIV in Hong Kong participated in the study and completed a self-report questionnaire on HIV stigma, psychological distress, and life s

Efficacy of a two-dimensional intervention model combining breathing training and psychological support for dyspnea management in patients with advanced cancer: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Dyspnea affects 50%-70% of patients with advanced cancer. Current management typically addresses physiological or psychological aspects in isolation. This trial evaluated a two-dimensional intervention targeting both breathing mechanics and psychological distress simultaneously. METHODS: This four-arm randomized controlled trial enrolled 160 patients with advanced cancer and moderate-to-severe dyspnea, allocated to Control (standard care), Breathing Training (BT), Psychological Support (PS), or Combined intervention (n = 40 per arm). Primary endpoints included dyspnea severity [Vi

The impact of sports participation on psychological health and social outcomes in children and adolescents: a systematic review and update to the "Mental Health through Sport" conceptual model.

BACKGROUND: Sport is a distinct, structured form of physical activity that can support psychological health and social development in children and adolescents. Compared to other forms of physical activity, the unique attributes of sport, including its combination of physical, cognitive, and social opportunities and challenges within structured goal-directed contexts, may confer additional psychological and social benefits. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on the psychological and social outcomes of sport participation in children and adolescents, and proposes an updated, development

Psychological factors demonstrate the largest incremental predictive value in a multi-domain machine learning model for secondary injury risk after ACL reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Secondary injury after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, defined as ipsilateral graft rerupture or contralateral ACL rupture, remains a clinical challenge. Current prediction models predominantly fail to capture this multifactorial risk. In this study, we developed a multi-domain machine learning model to predict the risk of secondary injury. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 487 patients who underwent primary ACL reconstruction. Thirty predictor variables spanning demographic, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), gait analysis, isokinetic strength, and
