The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of the miniscrew-supported, modified Hyrax appliance on bilateral distalization of posterior teeth. A 15-year-old girl with Class II malocclusion (end-to-end molar relationships, space deficiency for maxillary canine) underwent orthodontic treatment. The patient rejected tooth extraction. This article reports a brief overview of the risks associated with lower third molar extractions, and the claims that coronectomy may be useful as a treatment modality in managing some aspects of those risks. It discusses the position in terms of consent, and reports that some cases suggest that clinicians who do not offer coronectomy in appropriate circumstances may be vulnerable to litigation.

Treatment effects of lip bumpers alone include flaring of the mandibular incisors, distalization and uprighting of the mandibular first molars, and buccal expansion of the canines, premolars, and molar. Lip forces are transmitted through this appliance onto the molars. Moreover the lip bumper is able to derotate, expand or constrict, upright and reinforce the anchorage whereas torque control is lacking. Aim of this paper is the presentation of a new type of lip bumper that allows the molar torque control.

Ectopic eruption of teeth into a region other than the oral cavity is rare although there have been reports of teeth in the nasal septum, mandibular condyle, coronoid process, palate, chin and maxillary sinus. Occasionally, a tooth may erupt in the maxillary sinus and present with local sinonasal symptoms attributed to chronic sinusitis. We present a case of an ectopic maxillary third molar tooth that caused chronic purulent sinusitis in relation to the right maxillary sinus.

Seventeen patients, who presented mandibular fractures following third molar removal, were treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital Freiburg between 2000 and 2004.
