Altering developmental oxygen exposure influences thermoregulation and flight performance of Manduca sexta.

Endothermic, flying insects are capable of some of the highest recorded metabolic rates. This high aerobic demand is made possible by the in … developing in hypoxia (10% oxygen) decreased thermoregulating thorax temperature when compared with moths raised in normoxia or hyperoxia (30% oxygen), when moths were warming up in atmospheres with 21-30% oxygen. In addition, moths raised in hypoxia had lower critical oxygen levels when flying. These results suggest that chronic developmental exposure …

Monitoring and Behavioral Control of Lepidopteran Pests in Soybean: Evaluation of Food-Based Attractants, Trap Performance, and Selectivity on Non-Target Organisms.

Chemically mediated behavioral strategies, including semiochemicals and food-based attractants, have gained prominence in Integrated Pest Ma … , Brazil. Results indicated that funnel-ball traps captured a significantly higher number of target moths (36.8 ± 4.3 moths/trap/month) than delta-ajar traps (17.4 ± 2.9 moths/trap/month). However, both models presented similar species richness. Temporal patterns of moth abundance varied along the crop cycle and Helicoverpa armigera and Chrysodeixis inc …

Detection of Grapholitha molesta and Carposina sasakii based on environmental DNA and its field application.

BACKGROUND: Grapholitha molesta and Carposina sasakii are notorious pests that damage fruits, and are ranked among the most high-priority co … ane, after soaking the victim pulp for 15 min. The primers developed for these two species of fruit moths exhibited high sensitivity, with minimum detection limits of 0.1 and 0.01 ng/ul, respectively. CONCLUSION: The eDNA-based technology successfully detected the target moth species in orchards, regardless of whether the fruit was damaged by one or mo …

Identification of β-ionone as an oviposition preference cue in Spodoptera litura using SlitPBP3-based reverse chemical ecology.

BACKGROUND: Screening and identifying compounds that modulate oviposition by female Spodoptera litura moths is a promising strategy for the selective management of this pest. Reverse chemical ecology provides an efficient and target-oriented approach for identifying bioactive semiochemicals by exploiting the functionally relevant olfactory binding proteins. RESULTS: Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of multiple types of sensilla on the ovipositor of female S. litura, providing morphological support for the selection of ovipositor-expressed olfactory genes as screening targets…

Night and day: Contributions of diurnal and nocturnal visitors to pollen dispersal, paternity diversity, and fruit set in an early-blooming shrub, Daphne jezoensis.

PREMISE: Under uncertain pollinator visit conditions, plants often exhibit long flowering periods and generalized pollination systems. Flowering of the gynodioecious shrub Daphne jezoensis occurs in early spring in cool temperate forests. Pollination by nocturnal moths is expected, given the species' tubular-shaped flowers with sweet fragrance and nectar. However, the effectiveness of nocturnal moths under cool conditions is unknown. We evaluated the relative importance of diurnal and nocturnal visitors as pollinators in early spring. METHODS: We investigated flowering duration, flower visito…

Mating Disruption as a Suppression Tactic in Programs Targeting Regulated Lepidopteran Pests in US.

Mating disruption, the broadcast application of sex-attractant pheromone to reduce the ability of insects to locate mates, has proven to be an effective method for suppressing populations of numerous moth pests. Since the conception of mating disruption, the species-specificity and low toxicity of pheromone applications has led to their consideration for use in area-wide programs to manage invasive moths. Case histories are presented for four such programs where the tactic was used in the United States: Pectinophora gossypiella (pink bollworm), Lymantria dispar (gypsy moth), Epiphyas postvitta…

Functional Characterization of Peripheral Neurons and a Receptor Recognizing Sex Pheromones in Hyphantria cunea (Erebidae).

Hyphantria cunea (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) is difficult and costly to control as a quarantine pest found globally. Sex pheromone trapping is an effective measure for its population monitoring and control; however, the peripheral neural mechanism of sex pheromone recognition in H. cunea remains unclear. An electrophysiological analysis showed that both male and female moths of H. cunea responded to four components of sex pheromones and the responses of male moths were stronger than those of the female moths. We identified three types of trichoid sensilla (ST) responsive to sex pheromones using th…

11-cis retinal restores visual function in vitamin A-deficient Manduca.

Larvae of the tobacco hornworm moth Manduca sexta were reared on either a carotenoid-supplemented or a carotenoid-deficient diet. The former yields fortified adults with normal visual function, whereas visual sensitivity and rhodopsin content are reduced by 2-4 log units in the compound eyes of the deprived moths reared on the latter. We characterized the retinoids of fortified retinas and investigated the recovery of visual function in deprived moths that were provided with retinaldehyde as a source of photopigment chromophore. Retinoids were identified and measured by high-performance liquid…

A state-dependent model for the optimal management of an invasive metapopulation.

Management of invasive species involves choosing between different management strategy options, but often the best strategy for a particular scenario is not obvious. We illustrate the use of optimization methods to determine the most efficient management strategy using one of the most devastating invasive forest pests in North America, the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar), as a case study. The optimization approach involves the application of stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) to a metapopulation framework with different infestation patch sizes, with the goal of minimizing infestation spread. Potential for high hydrostatic pressure processing to control quarantine insects in fruit.

Tests were conducted to determine the potential for high hydrostatic pressure (HPP) to control codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), and western cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis indifferens Curran. Apples (Malus spp.) with codling moth larvae or eggs were treated at 24 and 72 h, respectively, after infestation at a series of pressures between 14,000 and 26,000 pounds per inch2 (psi). Survivorship was determined the next day for larvae and after 10 d for eggs. Codling moth eggs were more tolerant of HPP treatment than larvae. Mortality of larvae was 97% at 22,000 psi, whereas mortality of eggs at thi

Antennal Lobe Atlas of an Emerging Corn Pest, Athetis dissimilis.

Moths develop sophisticated olfactory systems to sense the airborne chemical cues from the environment. Understanding the structural basis in the neuronal center is a fundamental neuroethological step. Little is known about the emerging crop pest Athetis dissimilis with regard to its morphology or its neuronal organizations. Through antibody staining and digital 3D modeling, we re-constructed the primary olfactory center-the antennal lobe of A. dissimilis. In the antennal lobes 68.8 ± 3.1 male glomeruli and 70.8 ± 1.0 female glomeruli were identified with obvious sexual dimorphism. In particul…

Venomous caterpillars: From inoculation apparatus to venom composition and envenomation.

Envenomation by the larval or pupal stages of moths occurs when the victim presses their hairs. They penetrate the subcutaneous tissue, releasing toxins such as proteolytic enzymes, histamine and other pro-inflammatory substances. Cutaneous reactions, including severe pain, oedema and erythema are frequent local manifestations of caterpillar envenomation, but, in some cases, the reactions can evolve into vesicles, bullae, erosions, petechiae, superficial skin necrosis and ulcerations. Alternatively, some individual can develop allergic reactions, renal failure, osteochondritis, deformity and i…

A model of pheromone molecule-acceptor interactin.

Multiple binding interactions between odor molecules and acceptors are formulated by means of the Boltzmann statistics and intermolecular bond energies. Number, spatial arrangement and electronic properties of binding positions of the acceptor can be defined such that the specificity of sex pheromone receptors in male noctuid moths is quantitatively described.

Effect of X-ray irradiation on development, flight, and reproduction of Spodoptera litura.

Spodoptera litura is an omnivorous pest that has spread globally. Because irradiation sterilization technology has a great potential for control of S. litura, the effect of 25-150 Gy doses of X-rays on pupal survival, flight and reproductive variables of adult moths were analyzed in this research. The X-ray irradiation with the dose of 25-150 Gy significantly affected the reproductive ability of females. Irradiating male pupae with 25-150 Gy doses of X-rays had no effect on mating, life span, or flight ability of adult moths, but significantly reduced survival and fecundity of their offspring,…
