Species Identification and Delineation of Pathogenic Mucorales by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry.

This study aimed to validate the effectiveness of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS)-based identification of filamentous fungi of the order Mucorales. A total of 111 isolates covering six genera preserved at the Research Center for Medical Mycology of Peking University were selected for MALDI-TOF MS analysis. We emphasized the study of 23 strains of Mucor irregularis predominantly isolated from patients in China. We first used the Bruker Filamentous Fungi library (v1.0) to identify all 111 isolates. To increase the identification rate, w…

Fast technique for the identification of Gilbertella persicaria via optical microscopy.

Gilbertella persicaria is an important phytopathogen that is confused with Mucor spp. and Rhizopus spp. The main distinguishing characteristic of G. persicaria is the presence of appendages in sporangiospores, and their observation by conventional staining techniques generally fails. A technique is described using light microscopy for fast and reliable diagnosis.

Disseminated mucormycosis: An unusual case of ascites with bone marrow invasion.

Mucormycosis is a fatal invasive illness most frequently seen in immunocompromised hosts with uncontrolled diabetes, hematological malignancies, organ transplantation, or long-term steroid treatment. It has a poorer outcome than other fungal diseases due to its rapid spread and resistance to antifungal agents. We report a rare case of disseminated mucormycosis including the bone marrow, peritoneum, lung, and lymph nodes in an apparently immunocompetent 58-year-old gentleman who presented with two months of ascites and weight loss. After a thorough analysis, we found aseptate fungal hyphae in t…

Antimycotic effect of 3-phenyllactic acid produced by probiotic bacterial isolates against Covid-19 associated mucormycosis causing fungi.

The Covid-19 associated mucormycosis (CAM) is an emerging disease affecting immunocompromised patients. Prevention of such infections using probiotics and their metabolites persist as effective therapeutic agents. Therefore, the present study emphasizes on assessment of their efficacy and safety. Samples from different sources like human milk, honey bee intestine, toddy, and dairy milk were collected, screened and characterized for potential probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and their metabolites to be used as effective antimicrobial agents to curtail CAM. Three isolates were selected based…

Sinonasal and Orbital Imaging Findings in COVID-Associated Rhino-Orbito-Cerebral Mucormycosis During the Second Wave of COVID-19: A Retrospective Cohort Study in a Tertiary Hospital in Central India.

Background Mucormycosis is a consequence of the angioinvasive disease caused by filamentous fungi that belong to the order Mucorales, particularly Mucor, Rhizopus, and Rhizomucor. Rhizopus oryzae is the most prevalent form. The invading hyphae lead to damage of blood vessels leading to thrombosis and consequent tissue necrosis. The incidence of this disease entity witnessed a significant rise during the second wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Timely diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial to diminish both the mortality and morbidity associated with this disease. Ima…

An unusual case of gastrointestinal mucormycosis in a patient with nephrotic syndrome.

Immunosuppression predisposes to a variety of infections, some of which occur at unusual sites. Of all the forms of mucormycosis, involvement of the intestines is rare. High degree of suspicion along with the use of invasive procedures can facilitate the diagnosis of these infections. We report a rare case of gastrointestinal Mucor in a patient with nephrotic syndrome.

Cutaneous infarction. Manifestation of disseminated mucormycosis.

We describe the second reported case of cutaneous infarction as a manifestation of disseminated mucormycosis. The lesion, which closely resembled ecthyma gangrenosum, occurred in a leukemic patient who was on a regimen of broad-spectrum antibiotics. In this case as in the only other reported case, Mucor pusillus was the cause.

CT appearance of gastrointestinal tract mucormycosis.

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by fungi of order mucorales. It is most commonly seen in patients with an impaired immune system due to any cause. Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is the least frequent type and may be a primary disease or a feature of generalized mucormycosis. Angioinvasion is the hallmark feature of mucormycosis, leading to bowel infarction which is the responsible for the most common clinical complaint of pain, and is also responsible for most of the imaging findings in this disease. The stomach is most commonly involved organ in the gastrointestinal tract and pneumat…

[Forefront of diagnosis and treatment of deep-steam mycology in Korea--rhinoorbitocerebral zygomycosis].

Mucor is a mold which exists in nature, but mucor infections of humans, even in immunocompromised hosts, are rare. Clinical manifestations of mucormycosis are nonspecific and diagnosis is based on microscopic examination and culture of biopsy specimens. Serologic test or molecular methods of speciation are used only as research tools. We investigated medical records especially for underlying diseases, clinical findings, treatment, and prognosis of patients diagnosed with rhinocerebral mucormycosis retrospectively in the Asan Medical Center. The underlying diseases were diabetes mellitus in 8 p…

Clinical predictors of mucormycosis in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is an acute, often rapidly fatal fungal infection that is an important cause of death in young patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) who have poor glycemic control and acute ketosis. Despite the importance of this condition, the clinical predictors of mucor infection are not well defined. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was carried out for five patients, age 14-19 years, diagnosed with mucormycosis at the University of Florida between 1984 and 1999. For the three patients for whom adequate information was available, two randomly selected, age-matched case control…

Mucorales Species and Macrophages.

Mucormycosis is an emerging fungal infection caused by Mucorales with an unacceptable high mortality rate. Mucorales is a complex fungal group, including eleven different genera that can infect humans. This heterogeneity is associated with species-specific invasion pathways and responses to the host defense mechanisms. The host innate immune system plays a major role in preventing Mucorales growth and host invasion. In this system, macrophages are the main immune effector cells in controlling these fungi by rapid and efficient phagocytosis of the spores. However, Mucorales have evolved mechani…

Formulating Parasiticidal Fungi in Dried Edible Gelatins to Reduce the Risk of Infection by Trichuris sp. among Continuous Grazing Bison.

Control of infection by gastrointestinal nematodes remains a big problem in ruminants under continuous grazing. For the purpose of decreasing the risk of infection by Trichuris sp. in captive bison (Bison bison) always maintained in the same plot, dried gelatins having ≥106 chlamydospores of both Mucor circinelloides and Duddingtonia flagrans were given to them for one week, and at the end, fecal samples (FF) collected each week for four weeks were analyzed immediately. Feces taken one week prior to gelatin administration served as controls (CF). Eggs of Trichuris sp. were sorted into non-viab…
