The Impact of Oocyte Vitrification on Offspring: a Systematic Review.

Oocyte vitrification is a widespread and well-established assisted reproduction technique that has enabled some patient groups to obtain clinical results equivalent to those using fresh oocytes. However, as the number of babies born from vitrified oocytes has increased, so has the discussion regarding the method's safety for the offspring. Cryogenic oocyte damage caused by chemical, mechanical, and thermal stress has raised concern. In this systematic review, we asked the question of whether oocyte vitrification impacts offspring health. From 2007 to 2021, 13 studies were included in the analy

Prenatal exposure to barium and arsenic and the odds of congenital heart defects in offspring: a nested case-control study within a birth cohort in Lanzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified that exposure to heavy metals increases the prevalence of congenital heart defects (CHDs); however, limited information exists regarding the association between combined exposure to barium (Ba) and arsenic (As), and CHDs. This study aims to investigate the association between prenatal exposure to Ba and As (both independently and in combination) and the risk of CHDs in offspring. METHODS: In a birth cohort study conducted in Lanzhou, China, a total of 97 mother-newborn pairs were designated as the case group, with an additional 194 pairs constituti

The impact of fatty acids as bioactive nutrients on the development of offspring.

Fatty acids (FA) are normally considered a source of energy. However, some FA are essential nutrients with different biological functions, such as ligands for membrane and nuclear receptors; upon binding, they modify cell function and transcript expression. The bioactive effects of the FA depend on the FA type and family (i.e., n-6 vs. n-3). The FA effects on developmental programming have been studied in cattle and sheep, with some similarities in the outcomes between species. Feeding n-3 FA during late gestation improves offspring production performance (i.e., milk yield in dairy cows and gr

Association of maternal constipation and risk of atopic dermatitis in offspring.

Objectives: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic and relapsing dermatologic disease that can affect individuals of all ages, including children and adults. The prevalence of AD has increased dramatically over the past few decades. AD may affect children's daily activities, increase their parents' stress, and increase health expenditure. Constipation is a worldwide issue and may affect the gut microbiome. Some research has indicated that constipation might be associated with risk of atopic disease. The primary objective of this retrospective cohort study was to extend and to explore the link bet

Parental substance use disorder and risk of intellectual disability in offspring in Sweden: a national register study.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual disability (ID) is a disorder with unknown aetiology in many cases. Maternal alcohol use is a known risk factor for ID, but less is known about the importance of maternal and paternal substance use disorder (SUD) and risk of ID in offspring. METHODS: Data from multiple nationwide registers were used to create a cohort of children born from January 01, 1978 to December 31, 2002. All participants were born in Sweden, had available parental identification information and did not emigrate or die before age 12 (n = 1,940,820). Logistic regression modelling was performed wi

Prenatal phthalate exposure and placental size and shape at birth: A birth cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: There is concern over the potential placental effects of prenatal phthalate exposure, and the potential adverse effects of prenatal phthalate exposure require further study; however, few data are available in humans. We investigated the associations between phthalate exposure in each trimester and both placental size and shape at birth. METHODS: We measured the urinary concentrations of phthalate metabolites among 2725 pregnant women in the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort. Before collecting urine samples from each of the three trimesters, the pregnant women were interviewed via questionnair

Prenatal exposure to common infections and newborn DNA methylation: A prospective, population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Infections during pregnancy have been robustly associated with adverse mental and physical health outcomes in offspring, yet the underlying molecular pathways remain largely unknown. Here, we examined whether exposure to common infections in utero associates with DNA methylation (DNAm) patterns at birth and whether this in turn relates to offspring health outcomes in the general population. METHODS: Using data from 2,367 children from the Dutch population-based Generation R Study, we first performed an epigenome-wide association study to identify differentially methylated sites an

Association between prenatal Zika virus exposure and neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

INTRODUCTION: Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy has been associated with adverse birth outcomes, including congenital Zika syndrome, characterised by features such as microcephaly. However, the broader neurodevelopmental influence of prenatal ZIKV exposure, especially among offspring without congenital anomalies at birth, remains poorly understood. While previous studies, including a review, have explored neurodevelopment in ZIKV-exposed children, comparative pooled estimates between exposed and unexposed groups remain scarce. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluat

Maternal alcohol intake and offspring pulse wave velocity.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine exposure to alcohol may affect cardiovascular development, increasing risk of cardiovascular malformations. Intrauterine exposure to light maternal alcohol intake has been reported to affect human umbilical arterial contractility, and adult sheep exposed in utero have had altered cerebrovascular reactivity. In human adults, alcohol intake affects arterial stiffness. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether intrauterine exposure to alcohol was associated with childhood pulse wave velocity (PWV), a measure of arterial stiffness. METHODS: On postnatal day 4, mothers of 147 t

Effects of oligosaccharide-sialic acid (OS) compound on maternal-newborn gut microbiome, glucose metabolism and systematic immunity in pregnancy: protocol for a randomised controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: The gut microbiota participates in multiple human biological processes, including metabolism and immune responses. During pregnancy, the dynamics of gut microbiota is involved in physiological adaptation. The disturbed profile of microbiome is associated with maternal complications, such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), which further transfers to the offspring and influence their metabolic and immunological functions in the long term. Prebiotics targeting the gut microbiota and modulating metabolic and immune functions have been shown to be effective in non-pregnant popula
